Does anyone expect that the price of HDTVs will actually fall considerably in the new year? I read a couple different pieces over the past 3-4 months saying that they should. I've been holding out for awhile now and I can wait longer. I'll definitely get into a 42" one before next football season, but if the price drops between January and August are going to be minimal, then I am going to go ahead and get into one for the bulk of the bball schedule and for March Madness.

yes, they should drop considerably with the widespread introduction of LED backlit LCD panels

I'm debating to either wait for an LED tv to be affordable or just pick up a really sweet Sharp Aquos or Samsung now.

Care to explain why a newer initially more expensive technology is going to cause considerable price drops across the spectrum? I presume you mean the current non-led lit TVs, but I can't really read between the lines of a post as short as yours.

his post made plenty of sense. Current/Old LCD tech. will be less expensive with the introduction of newer/better LCD tech. which in this case is backlit LED's.

Of course that is just an assumption, for all we know they will keep pricing close to what it is now and just set the LED LCD's to be that much higher.

^^ i guess you're new to technology. here's the way it works - you have a top of the line product that is priced at the highest price point the market can bear. then you get a newer and better product which supplants that (now older) product at the highest price point and the (now old) product supplants the previously old, (now old older) middle of the road price

hopefully there are enough lines in this post for you to read between - if not, the writing between the lines goes something like this, "1 D 10 T"

Again, please grow the fuck up and stop trying to one up everyone in this section. I know exactly how tech pricing works you arrogant fuck.

Lets have an HDTV economics discussion then since you think you're the man. I don't see LED backlighting influencing the price of non-led backlighting until it's price comes down a TON. Question is, when will that happen? In my time frame, or just in time for xmas next year?

led backlit price replaces top end 'standard' LCD price, and then everything else trickles down

durr

when's your time frame? one day? one year? one month?

i'd expect to possibly see a drop before xmas, definitely before spring

LED backlit displays are already very close to an affordable price point, so I'm not sure what your question is... are you sure you understand HDTV economics? I mean, I'm no expert and I'm not trying to start a fight - just stating my opinion.

IT'S ON THIS PAGE. God. It really is hypocrisy at it's best when you guys hate on me for fucking threads up when you do blatant shit that leaves me no other choice than to get irked and post about it.

Quote :
"led backlit price replaces top end 'standard' LCD price, and then everything else trickles down"

Everything else trickles down? Yeah? Why should it. The average consumer that is looking in the 1k range won't be influenced by a 4k TV. The average consumer can't comprehend contrast ratios. The original comment was that LED backlighting is going to cause considerable price drops in my time frame. Not until the marginal benefit of LED backlighting (marginal to the average consumer) becomes cost competitive to the current technology will it have an influence. This is my opinion, please tell me why it will have an influence sooner rather than later.

I've google for 10 minutes and I don't get that impression. But then again, I'm not sure what your definition of affordable is either.

retail chubbs, retail

they want their shit to sell and they have to clear inventory as well.

your time frame is pretty vague from that post at the top of this page, sorry for not obsessing over everything you write on here.

but yes, it should drop a decent bit before feb. and will continue to drop, as it always has, over the subsequent months, it all depends on when you want it, and what features you're willing to pay for.

Really? Because I was thinking this exact same thing at this exact same point last year - that I'd wait on the 42" Plasmas going for $1200 around now and hopefully pick one up for near $700 soon after xmas, not later than early summer. Guess what, it just now happened. Which is why I am asking these questions again this year. What do the great HDTV all knowers (like Solinari) sooth say about the future this year?

i think its unreasonable to expect a 30% price drop to happen in less than a year.

you said it just happened now - that sounds about right, to me. I'd expect about a $500 drop in high-end tvs from year to year

also,

Quote :
"I'm not sure what your definition of affordable is "

well, the LED backlit display I was looking at is about $4500 which is possible, but would really hurt. I'm expecting them to be in the 3500 range by next christmas hopefully

If you have less than $1000 then stop torturing yourself (and us) and just go buy yourself a random tv that gets a good CNET rating. Prices don't drop much past $500 on large HDTVs if they even get that low.

6 month time frame? yeah i can tell you with near 100% certainty that it will be cheaper come august.... i doubt the floor will fall out on the prices, though it may be harder to find that particular model 6 months down the line.

$1200 ---> $700 is nearly 50% off, if you seriously thought this was going to happen you must have been smoking something special....

normal price drops due to newer models, short of something revolutionary like OLED screens that can be huge and cheaper per inch, are around $50 bimonthly or so until it hits near the floor of around 1000, then the price drop slows considerably....

LED backlit LCD's are a solid step forward but not currently huge enough to cause the near 50% reduction in price that you seem to be looking for.

entirely depending on the cost of white LED's the price of the LED backlit models should drop quite a bit if they spread that feature across their range of models...

i'd think more than $1000 in year, but not by much, probably from 4500 to 3000 for BF specials next year (depending on size)

still nothing like the 50% drop you'd like

otherwise i agree with sol

yea you're probably right - i'm kind of basing my estimates off of the last HDTV I bought 3 years ago, which has dropped about 500 a year since then. The difference is that 3 years ago those were early-adopter prices

"

Thanks to Wal Mart, 42" plasma pricing took a nosedive leading into Christmas. TVs that were months before selling for around $1700+ were suddenly down to $1200, and in some cases touching $1000 (the Westys without tuners IIRC). I don't think it was a real stretch at the time to think that the downward price march might continue to some flat point (is/was that $500, $700, $900). I learned later that walmart came out with cut throat pricing on a 42" set that forced everyone else to compete. But, that was last year. The question is posed again, where will pricing go.

Solinari came out and said they will be considerably cheaper. Then he said it's unreasonable to expect a 30% price drop (and 30% to me is considerable).

I apologize if I have mislead everyone when I said "the price of HDTVs" when I really meant the lower end models (not the Bravias, Elites, etc). But I'm also not looking, per se, for a 50% price drop. In short, I am wondering if I should start lookin for TVs if folks think they'll fall pretty quickly after Xmas as retailers try to get rid of glut. If they aren't going to fall quickly, but rather steadily through the year (ie, the price isn't flatlining), then I'll put off my searching. If they are already approaching a flat line, then I'll just put the thoughts out of my mind for awhile.

not quite the same as that was when a better competing (relative) technology was emerging (large cheaper LCD's)

but for this purpose, at this time, you probably won't see that same % drop again (42), though you might see 30% on the crap sets, but honestly if you see a 20% off jump on it.

FWIW, I've seen an HDTV price chart that shows current-tech TVs very nearly flat-lining within the next 6 months to a year. I say "very nearly" because it indicates drops of only a few hundred dollars at most over that span.

I went ahead and ordered the TV I've been looking at today because I figure the price will drop by january 3rd, one month after it will be shipped, and Amazon will refund the difference as will most large retailers. The price recently rose in time for the holidays, so I have a hunch it will fall after new years.

Now is as good a tme as any to buy a TV, in my opinion. You've got to jump in at some point, and there are some quality TVs out there for reasonable prices.

I think its great that you're interested in HDTV, but seriously, like the other guy said - you gotta pay to play and you're talking like a player but then bitch about the money.

just go buy yourself a decent budget HDTV and leave us alone - we really can't help you with your lack of money.

I had my mom pick up a 42" LCD Vizio 720p for my dad...maybe a 1080p, since there was some issue picking it up or getting it delivered. For the most part Vizio has gotten good reviews and the price was great. I think they have a really good dead pixel policy as well.

i love my samsung plasma and sharp lcd for what it's worth. my stepdad has a westinghouse and both of my tvs kill that picture.

the differences between 720p and 1080p are unnoticeable to me unless i'm standing about a foot away.

1.3+ HDMI, signal processing differences, contrast ratios, refresh rate (to a certain extent), available features, audio capabilities.

built in HD tuners

all make the 'best' brands better than the rest

the samsung LN-T4665F has:
better contrast (by a lot)
1 more HDMI port
dvid over hdmi 1:1 mapping (i think)
1 more s-video (lame i know but still)
brighter (10% 550 - 500)
uses less power (265 - 280)
lighter (61 - 120+)
USB

the vizio has:
--

the samsung gives up a inch, costs a little more but you get a better overall picture, hurts your wallet less in power, weighs less, more inputs, side inputs (1 hdmi, 1 svideo, 1 composite)
