They're british.
Didn't we make wild claims like the information we had leading up to the Iraq war came from british intelligence, or we tried to pass that buck at first?
Yeah let's do that again. It's 'cause he talks with marbles in his mouth without paying attention to what he's reading. 11/29/2007 9:37:56 AM |

holy shit i got a response
Quote : | "Actually, I did read the whole thread, and gave at least some credit to News 14 in that they had said that there was *some* approval process to things that were posted…
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/03/05/wags_hijack_tv_channels_onscreen/
“Before a submitted announcement would appear on the air, it had to be approved by a reviewer, said Schell. But once approved, the system allowed a business to change their name and the details of the closing through the website without any further human attention.”
If that was not the case, and anything people created was let through (which isn’t what Mr Schell’s comment led me to believe) then I don’t know who to apologize to – News 14 for not being so stupid in thinking it would be abused in some way and leaving it “open” to the internet or “you” (the collective people on TheWolfWeb) for giving more props than necessary. As you said, there was some Time of check – Time of use “hack” (or whatever you want to call it – vulnerability, flaw, bug, etc) to create messages that would go on the air without approval which is what I tried to show. So, in this case I attempted to surmise what the process was behind the scenes and how it was vulnerable – perhaps I got some things wrong but from an educational point of view I thought it was as accurate as I could be without going into a lot of detail (that’s what the link was for if anyone was interested).
As for other things I’ve credited incorrectly, I know I screwed up a lot more – 6.5BN people on the internet! I flubbed quite a bit more than incorrectly having News 13 on the slides. As for the other “university” reference, in watching again I missed out the “state” part – once again my fault, but nerves were getting to me and sometimes I go too fast for myself (the presentation was to about 150 of Google’s engineers and testers – they do a series called EngEdu where they invite people up). Other than that, I don’t believe I said it was affiliated to the university in any way, just it was “students from…” – which is what the description of the site says.
So, without actually being part of this, or knowing info from the other side, I relayed as much as I could in a funny way to show how websites can get attacked in various ways. Perhaps I took some liberties (all stories get “embellished” to some degree), and in review obviously made some mistakes for which I’m sorry but I honestly don’t think they were all that much – I don’t think I got it “almost totally wrong” in any case. I do however thank you guys for doing this in (in my “non professional capacity” of course – doing this sort of thing is “bad” ) giving lots of people amusement, and something to warn people about not doing. If/when I do use this story/idea again, I’ll make sure I get it right.
And for the people on the message board (feel free to post this up there as requested, but please no spam – I get enough each day that I have to delete! Perhaps leave my address off unless people really want to contact me?), I could only show the “safe for work” screen-grabs (which I grabbed from the board IIRC – no user access) and some of them weren’t really appropriate - Cecils Cock Ring Emporium, Mike Hunt Enterprises, P. Nis, et al, I certainly got a laugh from, but didn’t feel I could show them! The accent is from SE London originally, and yeah, thanks for pointing out that I’m rolly-polly/fat – I hadn’t noticed! What is it with the personal slights (here, on the Google Video comments) – I would rather be as I am than some “skinny dude” that knows nothing and is ignorant about the world. Occupational hazard of being a computer geek and on the road a lot I suppose
Cheers,
Mike." |
