6. Brandon Costner — Sidney Lowe isn't the only one who needs to take some blame at N.C. State. There's plenty to go around. The talented, yet often lazy 6-9 sophomore is shooting a pitiful 31 percent from the floor and has made just 7 of 26 shots from long distance. He finished the season a year ago as one of the most dominant players in the nation (he had 30 points in an ACC tournament win against Duke), but appears to have read too many of his own press clippings or something.

If you want proof, check out last year's ACC tournament (they beat Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech in successive days before running out of gas against UNC). However, Lowe has a team with virtually all of the same pieces and the Wolfpack are just 4-3 with losses to New Orleans and East Carolina — and a blowout at the hands of Michigan State. N.C. State doesn't appear to be playing with the same purpose as it did late last season and Lowe has made a mistake by cutting Ben McCauley's minutes so dramatically."

same thing that happened to brackman... we try to pack size on to these guys, and they get too big too fast and can't carry their new playing weight

Costner, I hope you're happy. You just cost yourself at least $1m in your lifetime. You could've gone pro easily had you played this year like you did last. Now, you'd be lucky to get an invite to the Third World Poories of the Guam National Basketball League.

Sidney said in the post game interview with Raycom that he kept McCauley in b/c he got into a rhythm and was giving us some rebounding that we desperately needed. That's also probably why Javi stayed in rather than putting Marques in. Lowe probably didn't want to mess up the rhythm that the guys on the court were in.

Oh and GG Costner. You were confident in your shot and played a good game, the one that we all knew you could. He was what 4-4 on 3 pointers? I also liked how in the 1st half he drove to the basket and unselfishly gave it up to Hickson rather than forcing it against the defender, then on one of the next trips down Hickson repaid him and dished it to him for an easy dunk. Nice chemistry there.

that and the graham kid could back costner down pretty much whenever the fuck he wanted. McCauley's interior D was more of a reason why costner sat

We have heard that Costner just needs one game and he'll be on and ready for the rest of the season. Hopefully only 3 games into ACC play that is right. McCauley is still the better defender. Oh and WHY did we stop driving which was working so well the first half?

imo these two plays were probably 2 of the most important plays of the game (beside Grant's shots at the end of regulation and OT). I hadn't seen that kind of unselfishness from either of those 2 players the entire year.

HEY COSTNER, YOU FUCKING SUCK. Learn to catch a pass that hits your hands. Sadly, the only way we will be consistently good is if Costner starts averaging 15 points a game as he did in the ACC tourny. He is the key to our success. Oh yeah, 5 turnovers for pudgy tonight.

Let McCauley start and until Costner gets rid of his butterfingers and shooting slump he should remain on the bench.

^^And the cause of our failures. Lowe should sit him down and make him watch tape of the ACC tourney from last year for homework and ask him where his dribbling, shooting, rebounding and passing skills went.

that beast had 30 against Duke alone... I'm sure he averaged much higher than 30. Costner, for real man, where did it go?

Did you notice he turned it over twice, back to back possessions, with under 2 minutes to play? Seriously, it probably cost them the game.

yeah, and that was the only thing we did wrong all night.

you can't blame a loss on 1 specific thing, but it certainly would have helped if he did something to cancel out the shittiness he spews forth some times.

Start McCauley and move Costner to the 6th man position. Also play Tracy Smith more....everyone is sleeping on this kid, but he's already almost an ACC caliber player.

i couldnt agree more. i still have no idea why Costner keeps getting the start. i would also give TSmith all of Horner's time.

i think TSmith is our hidden gem also.

Horner is a good kid but he is just too slow to play in the ACC or in this offense. He takes a pump fake on a 3 and then passes. Defense he hustles more than most but still isn't very skilled.

[Edited on January 24, 2008 at 11:58 AM. Reason : ^Agree on Tracy, he will be a solid player for us for a few years]

What I really can't understand is why Costner can go 4/4 from 3pt in the first half and get benched all of the second half, but play like shit and get playing time all over...

explain plz.

what i don't understand is why everyone wants to see mccauley instead of costner. he hasn't done anything this year either.

but i've been on the tracy smith bandwagon all year, that dude can ball.

they have both under-performed compared to last year, but i think mccauley gives the appearance of effort. he's also a better passer and hustles more. but you're right... neither have been particularly impressive thus far.

that has to be what's going on. people look at mccauley and he looks really into it, so they give him a pass for missing every shot he takes and getting abused in the paint.

One thing for sure is that you can't crack on McCauley's defense. He's usually solid.

You can't say the same for Costner. He's responsible for so many lapses on defense it's not funny.

That's to me the biggest difference.

McCauley hustles and plays defense. Costner has better offensive potential.

Play McCauley one whole game and let Costner grab 8-10 minutes instead and see the difference. I bet we play better as a team overall.

Only thing lacking from McCauley's defense is hops. Other than that, he's always in good position, you can't knock him off his ground, he hustles, and he rebounds.

Costner gets pushed around, doesnt hustle, doesnt rebound, and turns it over too much on offense.

But costner can shoot the 3 play him

Show me where costner has better post moves than McCauley. Otherwise, thats a retarded comment. Costner travels, cant dribble, throws up horrible shots, and gets ripped every time he gets the ball in the low post. McCauley can actually create his own shot and find an open man once in a while. If Costner is double teamed, he's as bad as Hickson if not worse.
