There are no SECU "members." There are only member-owners. 3/24/2008 7:25:22 AM |

^^^ it goes to the community and scholarships, typically you make over $1 a month interest on your checking account if you keep practically anything in it.
Most banks you will get nothing for checking or considerably lower and normally with balance requirements.

Let me tell you, simply having a SECU checking account is worth far more than $12 a year to me. 3/24/2008 7:41:51 AM |

Checking pays .75% a year!
At that rate
0.0075% *1,600 = 12$.
Most college kids don't have 1600$ a month to be lying around in a checking account to break even.3/24/2008 7:56:30 AM |

Most college kids are probably too dumb to also open a high-yield savings account with SECU and simply move money to checking when they need it. 3/24/2008 8:00:06 AM |

What's up Jonathan? Long time no talk! We need to grab coffee sometime.
I have a high-yield checking account with Charles Schwab. It's absolutely free and draws 3.01 percent a year. All you have to do is open a brokerage account; you don't necessarily have to use it, just keep it around.
The only catch I've encountered is that there are no Charles Schwab banks in the Triangle. That is not a problem for me, however, because all of my paychecks direct deposit. And if I ever need to deposit money myself, I can either mail it to them (then give you a stack of prepaid envelopes) or deposit it in my Wachovia account and transfer it to Schwab. As far as withdraws, you can use any Plus certified ATM, and Charles Schwab will completely refund the service fee.
