having every conference champion in the playoff is ludicrous

even the 1-aa playoffs don't do that

they can get in with an at-large bid

even an at-large system, though, makes those conferences meaningless. Especially since people will be arguing that "Georgia should be given preference to a MAC Champ"

yeah but that'd still be light years ahead of where we're at now. either playoff suggestion would be 10 times better than now.

a team playing for the championship simply b/c they don't play the last month of the season? fuck that.

nah. if it were the "computers," then I doubt that OSU and LSU would be playing.

But hey, what's wrong w/ taking a system that was designed to prevent the sportswriters from having too much influencing and whittling it down so that the sportswriters control it? Makes perfect sense to me

Reorganize the BCS conferences into 5 super conferences with 16 teams (Big East is consumed). You play 12 game schedules with 7 teams from your division, rotating 3 from the other division, and 2 non-conference games to bring the second-tier conferences into the picture and any other rivals. Each conference has a championship game. National Championship is an 8 team playoff with the 5 conferences champions and 3 at-large. (You still need a BCS-like formula to determine seeding and at-large bids... and bring back margin of victory)

The conferences would look like...

ACC Standings
ATLANTIC COASTAL
Boston College Virginia Tech
Maryland Virginia
Clemson Georgia Tech
Wake Forest North Carolina
Florida State Duke
NCState Miami (FL)
Connecticut Syracuse
Rutgers South Florida or UCF

Big 12 Standings
NORTH SOUTH
Kansas Oklahoma
Missouri Texas
Colorado Texas Tech
Kansas State Texas A&M
Nebraska Oklahoma State
Iowa State Baylor
Boise State UTEP
Colorado State New Mexico

Big Ten Standings
NORTH SOUTH
Michigan Ohio State
Wisconsin Illinois
Penn State Indiana
Iowa Purdue
Michigan State Notre Dame
Minnesota Cincinnati
Northwestern West Virginia
Pittsburgh Marshall

Pacific-10 Standings
NORTH SOUTH
Washington Stanford
Washington St. UCLA
Oregon State USC
Oregon Arizona
California Arizona State
Utah Hawaii
Brigham Young Fresno State
Nevada UNLV

SEC Standings
EAST WEST
Georgia LSU
Tennessee Auburn
Florida Arkansas
Kentucky Mississippi State
South Carolina Alabama
Vanderbilt Mississippi
USF or UCF Memphis
Louisville Tulane, UAB, or USM

Exactly, the BCS worked much better until they tinkered with it (substantially reduced the weighting of SOS and margin of victory, made it pretty much completely based on the whims of pollsters, etc.).

the solution is not to consolidate every team into one big league. that'd do nothing but turn college football into the nfl, which would be terrible.

They need to seriously consider changing the requirements for being a D-1A team. No way there should be 119 teams in 1A.

There are 3 at-large bids. If someone is really worthy then they can squeak in. There is a point where you have to cut off the fat.

Plus, I've always been a fan of doing the levels like is done in some European soccer... if you continuously suck you are dropped a tier. If you play well at a lower level you get bumped up.

Leaving the bowl system is making NCAA more like the NFL to begin with.

Try that in the NFL and see how far that goes. If you want to "trim the fat," then GET RID OF THE WEAK CONFERENCES! Quit being a fucking monopoly and fucking the little guys.

what do you think makes these teams "continuously suck?" I'd say it's the monopolistic bullshit that prevents them from earning the money that the big guys get by simply sticking their dick out and letting the sportswriters suck it

The NFL is lightyears ahead of virtually every other sports league or setup in the world.

If the NCAA was not about trying to let every team win they wouldn't have changed the rules on scholarship numbers, recruiting rules, etc. The smart folks within the NCAA realized that parity can do for college football what it has done for the NFL, popularize it as a whole. The reason the NFL is so successful is because at the start of the year, with few exceptions your team has a shot at winning it all. It's the opposite in NCAA football, which is why the casual fan can't get into it.

I say keep the four BCS bowls. Have the winners of the Rose play the winners of the Sugar, and do the same with the other two. Take those winners and have 'em play for the NC. Preserves the bowl associative traditions and allows for teams like Georgia this year to make their claim.

Well, it's true from a health, revenue, and rating's standpoint. Ask anyone who covers sports in America which is the most well run sports league and they'll tell you, almost to a man, that it's the NFL. Considering the state of sports in this country compared to the rest of the world it's not much of a stretch to say it's the best run league in the world. Only the EPL could possibly make an argument.

How do you not? What other country has as significant a sporting environment as America? None. Outside of soccer most countries don't even have pro sports. The EPL is really the only pro sports league outside of the US that I would say is on par with the large US pro sports leagues.

What makes these programs suck is a lack of commitment to the sport by the AD and boosters. For example, UConn has always had huge BBall support but just recently got off their ass in football. Combine this with some stupid hiring decisions and subsequent poor coaching/recruiting and you have suckage. "Monopolistic bullshit" did not stop Wake Forest from succeeding and does not prevent programs like Duke, Baylor, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Iowa State, Ole Miss, etc. from succeeding and does not automatically make historic programs like Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, and Washington succeed. If you are in a BCS conference and you repeatedly flounder at the bottom then you get bumped out and someone from CUSA, WAC, etc. gets bumped in.

won't happen because attendance would drop. It's one thing for someone to take one trip to a far away place to play in a bowl game. It's another for them to go multiple times. Would be better to play the initial games at one of the schools and then at worst have the semifinal games and the final at some away site. It would be easier on the fans to just have the finals at some far away location though.

Surprise Surprise THE Ohio State was chosen by a poll taken from biased sports geeks. i wonder how much cock the Athletic Director sucks to get OSU into the national championship again.

The BCS national championship game carries no meaning for me personally. Upsets like how Illinois beat the Ohio State would allow more parody for the championship game.

BCS and the general lack of parody anyway is a main reason i prefer NFL football a lot more then college. In the NFL any team can be a contender for the super bowl one year and be the shittiest team in the conference the next year.

Quote :
"16 is too much, it's like ESPN was saying which i agree with, you don't want to make the season irrelevant"

I do not quite understand this argument. If say Kansas gets upset by some podunk team then it hurts Kansas's record which would allow another team to win the conference potentially.

It is always about money, and tradition. Any solution must be one that makes sure the same amount of money is generated. That means the current small bowls must stay in place, even though we have to many bowls and some really suck, it generates money for the community they are in plus TV/sponsorship revenues.

I think the playoff should be a 12 team system. Top 4 teams get byes, and the first round games are played at 5-8 home field. This gives those teams an extra home game they wouldn't get in an 8 team system. All BCS conference champions make the tournament, and the top 2 mids get automatic as well(top 2 mid majors in the bcs formula, so Hawaii and BYU would be in). From there, the last spots are at large to the highest ranked teams, could be mid majors, whoever. All teams not involved in this system would still be available to play their normal bowl games, the BCS bowls now would be the semi's, championship game, and a 3rd place game(gets the 4 bowls). It would rotate each year.

I have no idea who wrote that as I didn't check but I saw someone else quote it and respond...

Come on. Do you people really know so little about the rest of the world that you think THAT is true. Throughout Europe their are professional hockey leagues, professional basketball leagues (J-Hodge is playing in Italy and reportedly loving it) and top level Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, AFL leagues... just because it isn't one of the major US sports doesn't mean it isn't played at the highest level professionally in other countries...

I think you can make an argument that America is quite tame when it comes to the professional sporting environment...
