they can be "challenging" to train from what i've heard--akitas are awesome guard dogs too, but are difficult as well

We have this huge german shep that's been boarding with us for SEVERAL months because the parents relocated for a ob and are building a house but are currently staying at a place that doesn't allow dogs. Anyways, they periodically come to visit him and he gets oh so excited about it but when they bring him back he tears his kennel apart with anger throwing his metal framed bed around, tossing his food bowl as much as he can, barking so loud it can be heard throughout the entire 200 kennel facility and banging his tail so hard it rips the hair off and starts bleeding. We've told the owner that his outstaying his welcome and the dog is tired of living in a kennel but he can't help his pokey builders. I almost don't want to let them visit because of how traumatizing it is for the poor thing.

Rottweiler> German Shepherds

I grew up with each as trained personal/family protection dogs and our Rottie was by far a better all around dog than our German Shepherd.

I don't like aggressive dogs. They tend to get away from people and attack me. I think they look at me and see a steaming roasted turkey like in the cartoons or something.

buddy of mine has two 6 month old puppies.

he spent three hours at 4am yesterday chasing one of them.

he also has 3 or so pure breed malinois that are free to a good home.

they look like this guy (mason)
hes a pansy for real

"Giant sized german shepherds - best guard dogs ever"

Yeah, except for the fact that these oversized dogs (often called King Shepherds or Shiloh Shepherds) are NOT 100% GSD. Furthermore, they are bred to be family dogs, with stable, loving personalities, straight backs, and often a lower work drive. The true GSD should NOT be over 100lbs, though, I've seen many who are simply because irresponsible backyard breeders throw two dogs together to make puppies. That doesn't mean they aren't beautiful animals or great members of the family, but, it exceeds the breed standard. (and, fyi, I fully believe that any show dog should first, and foremost be a working dog. I hate the way we americans have grossly altered the hips of the "show" GSD...and as far as working dogs go, the larger the animal, the less agile (which defeats the whole idea of a "working" dog).

Anyway, I could rant for days about this...just my quick .02

These are my absolute favorite breed of dog though...awesome when well bred and well trained

hey, I'm not saying they don't have one heck of smooth gait...its amazing to watch...but...it makes for some serious issues as the dog ages
