no shit. i was reacting to how she seemed pretty casual about it. i mean, not being responsible enough to set a daily alarm on your watch or cell phone is bad enough, but if you can't remember to take them, finding an alternate approach is a priority for, like, yesterday (especially if you aren't ok with abortion), and in the meantime, i wouldn't be counting on the Pill to do anything.

true but some birth control are really picky

thats the reason why i cant be on the pill because theres only one thats available for people with high blood pressure, and you HAVE to take it at the same hour every day or it will not be effective

theres no way id remember to take it at the same hour every day because i barely remember to take my blood pressure meds daily, i just have a bad memory when it comes to that kind of thing

^2 I'm really good at forgetting to take it at the same time everyday too. And a lot of those tricks don't work for me. I think the biggest problem is that me and my boyfriend live in two different places, so I have to remember to take it to his house, and back to my house, etc. I could easily remember to take it if I could put it by my toothbrush and take it in the am. If I did that now, I would inevitablly leave it at there when I went to his house. BUT we are moving in together this weekend... so that should fix that.

However, I am smart enough to know that not taking it at the same time decreases the effectiveness, and so we AlWAYS, ALWAYS use condoms. I insist on it. I certainly don't want a kid right now.

Almost 10% of women have Mirena removed within the first 6 months. More deal with it, but won't get a new one when the old one is removed.

Most docs won't tell you this unless you ask. If you've had problems with any other hormonal birth control methods, then obviously your chances of problems are higher.

I've tried about every pill and had bad side effects from them all, so I waited until I was having surgery anyway (to look for endo) and had my tubes tied at the same time (I was 24, and would suggest Dr. Hardison at Chapel Hill ob/gyn to anyone interested). Might not be as easy for someone else to have done (I have a long family history of serious health problems and a few myself) but if you are going to be opened up anyway and don't want kids I would highly suggest it.

My aunt has one and loves it, so does another lady at work. However they have both had kids.

I have thought seriously about it, but I have huge issues with hormones. I have finally found a pill with a different kind that doesn't make me continuously throw up or nauseated. I don't want to put this thing in and then find out the hormones in it are going to cause a problem. Still thinking about it though... the 5 year time frame is just about perfect for me.

i set the alarm on my cell phone to go off at the same time everyday and i keep my pills in my purse so they're always with me. it works out pretty well.

I'm considering getting the Mirena IUD

I'm having my first baby any day now (was due on the 6th) and haven't seriously discussed BC with the doctor yet.
I was on the nuvaring for 2 yrs and liked it that is until I got pregnant on it... so I don't think I'll use it again. I hated BC pills

We want more kids but want to wait at least 3 years. My only concern is I've heard of a few people getting an IUD and the string not being long enough and they couldn't remove it.

^^ I tried that, and found that it worked better then nothing, but I'm one of those people with the tendacy to leave their cell phone in the other room, their car, on vibrate, etc. I do keep them in my purse, cause that's the only way I always have them. I think once me and P move in together I'll keep them by the toothbrush .though.

Are sponges, vaginal contraceptive films/gels, diaphragms, cervical cap, and all that good stuff just completely out these days?

hell, I even know a girl who just found out she'd beaten the Mirena IUD, although her doc told her that there's about an 85% that she's going to miscarry (it had become dislodged and punctured her uterus, but she didn't go to the doc even though she was having a lot of pain).

I was a month overdue, but that was back in the early 80s when they said the baby will come when he's ready or some shit like that.

Yea we beat condoms and the patch and a friend beat the patch too (though his wife was kinda heavy and she was putting it like on her outer thigh and shit, which my wife said was a big no-no; she kept alternating her's below her stomach, alternating sides). So far 10 months into Mirena and no problems whatsoever.

You might want to seriously consider it XC. Its basically just put it up there and forget it. Every once in a while when we are being intimate I "check" it to make sure it still feels like its in the right place, but I'm pretty sure I've only ever felt the strings before, and thats a once in a while deal. So much easier, and cheaper, to deal with than pills, patches, rings, foam, condoms, etc. etc. etc.

I understand due dates are just a guess and it's hard since I got pregnant on BC but they think she's close to 8 lbs now... i don't want to deliver a monster sized baby.

I've run out of patience, cleaned the house from top to bottom, organized everything, can't walk without shooting pain, have back pain that is unbearable, and am driving my husband and mother-in-law nuts. not to mention sick of a million phone calls daily "is the baby here?"...

Girl, you've got all the signs of someone who should be going into labor at ANY MOMENT. I would be doing everything humanly possible to start labor: walking, sex, spicy food, and a bunch of illogical crap that I know couldn't possibly work.

I have 4 weeks to go and I'm already miserable. The thought of going 5 or 6 more weeks makes me feel just a little crazy.

I've been dilated and effaced (80%+) for weeks and have contractions all day but they don't get intense enough or close enough for a significant amount of time to get excited.

I don't care how many women have claimed that caster oil or enemas worked for them, that just seems like it would make for a bad situation whether it worked or not.

I think that I would be trying to get that kid out with a plunger and a bucket, if I were you. I've hated being pregnant so much that I've (ashamedly) been praying for this kid to show his face ASAP, even though he's about a little over a week shy of the magical 37 weeks.

You should make a list of all the reasons that you should be induced Wednesday instead of waiting an extra week and present it to the doctor.

I was very seriously considering it over the last month because the previous month the Nuvaring decided it was going to freak out and cause breakthrough bleeding despite my being on it for over a year. I was looking into Paragard, because I would prefer a non-hormonal one if I do decide to get one. Anyone had that one? Pretty much everyone I know who's had one got Mirena.

HOWEVER, my doc mentioned that it is far more painful for women who haven't had children because their cervix is much tighter. Lucky me.

I had my IUD put in this morning and it was really a piece of cake. I felt it go in, but it barely registered on the pain scale. I was worried that it would hurt since my delivery wasn't vaginal, but I was pleasantly surprised.

And it better be as baby proof as they claim that it is because I have my hands full with just one special needs kid. I could not imagine having another child running around at the moment.

I hope that I fall into that 40% whose periods stop because I was use to suppressing my cycle with birth control pills.

Jen, I had mine inserted right after you did.

My pain has all been 'in the front' instead of the back. Along with these menstrual-like cramps, I have also had light and unpredictable bleeding. My doctor told me to expect it for about a month or two after having the IUD inserted.

Had Madison almost 12 weeks ago. Still going back and forth between the IUD and Nuvaring.

My husband and I agree that we want to wait at least 3-4 years.
I have insurance (BCBS) but I know it won't cover all of it (the IUD.) I need to find out how much it would cost me.
Now I'm kinda of worried about the pain but I can't imagine it's as bad as pushing out a 9.7 lb baby... and the cramps and back pain? My back hurts enough as it is.

I need to make a decision soon.

We didn't pay shit for her getting Mirena. We had prepaid like $40 a visit and I guess we had overpaid. She never even had an office copay that visit. But then you have to figure in that you don't have to pay for shit for another two years instead of that monthly or every couple month bill for the patch/nuva.

My wife still has a period sometimes. Lucky me, right before I leave for a conference and she has had one since Sat. But its not as bad as it used to be, and sometimes she skips altogether. She does not have any back or front pain from it. She may have had some initially, but I don't know how much was everything getting back to normal after the baby and how much was the IUD. And she said after 2 babies, it was nothing to get it put in. Bottombaby apparently agreed above. Jen is the only one that had problems, and she has not had any babies herself. So you should be just fine.

We blew through the Patch and condoms, and Charlie is a year old this month and still no #3 yet! So far I am a fan.

Mirena's website states that it pays for itself if you keep the IUD longer than one year.

After our son was born with complete DiGeorge syndrome, my husband and I wanted to ensure that we would not get pregnant again until after our life normalizes and we know for certain that another pregnancy will not result in the same condition. Our doctor told us that an IUD was our best option because it has the lowest failure rate and it can be removed if we want to have another baby or a new one inserted at the end of 5 years.

If you've been pregnant and had a baby, the IUD is a snap. The cramping and bleeding that you can have in the weeks after it being inserted, is absolutely nothing compared to what you have following a baby. And insertion is easy (even if you had a C-section like I did, apparently).
