Failing calculus should incur some sort of physical punishment, maybe public caning, or you have clean the bathrooms in Harrelson for a week. Alternatively, you could agree to make graduation contingent on taking several 400 level math classes in the future. In addition you are banned from participation in any collegiate sports activities and/or Greek events.

Rules to restrict the use of new versions of textbooks.

As much as people like to bitch and moan about student fee increases, textbook prices are rising faster than student fees do.

for example, the MAE dept uses two required books for 315, one of which is only used for about 20% of the course. This book was released in 3rd edition in 2004, and was just released in its 4th edition this year. The old version cost me over $100 used, the new version costs $170 new, and the new version both costs me money trying to sell my old edition and costs students taking it next year money because there won't be used versions available.

given that we only use this book for a fraction of the semester, it is stupid that they jump to a new edition.

Agreed.

I had a personal question in line with that: how much do y'all use textbooks in your other courses?

I had "required" texts in all 4 of my classes this semester, but have actually only had to use 1 of them -- the teachers had copies of their lecture notes, worksheets, or Powerpoint slides for the others.

Speaking from a mechanical engineering standpoint . . .

Most teachers give notes that suffice and the only use for the book is for the HW problems. Occasionally you have to search in the book for how to do some of the problems. But I've rarely read much of any of the text.

What the bookstore says is "required" and what is actually required are often different. Some teachers will tell you that you don't really need the book.

hell a lot of the books listed as required on the class syllabus, you don't even need. I only needed 1 book that the instructor listed as "required" and that was for english.
