bj beats sherk and then...? who can test him at 155? Gomi was at UFC 79 so maybe a Gomi vs BJ rematch somewhere down the road? BJ is talking about moving back up but to 170, I hope he doesnt for a long time. I like him at 155 where all the action is.

This site has the Penn/Stevenson fight in its entirety!

complete dominance by Bj but stevenson showed he has a set of BALLS

http://ufc-forums.com/ufc-videos-pictures/300-ufc-80-video.html

I mean, grappling, striking, aggression, excitement, technique BJ has it all

BJ Penn is the man.

He's like a low profile fighter imo. doesn't talk alot of shit and wear obnoxious clothing. he keeps to himself and then fuckin beats you to near death in front of millions and millions of people.

^^it wasnt much, BJ said that "SHERK IS DEAD" while rogan interviewed him, then Sherk was sent into the cage to say some words...Bj just shook his hand and said "its gonna be a good fight" and sherk just said a few words

what was great was that the fans BOOED THE SHIT out ofwhen he stepped into the cage...sherk was like "you people can boo me all you want i dont really care"

ill try to find all the in ring post fight stuff, there was some good shit

of course the best was them showing Joe Stevenson crying and absolutely beside himself...and the next shot is bj penn on his trainers shoulders punching himself in the face repeatedly and then licking Joes blood off his gloves

in a sport where the intention is to cause as much physical and psychological damage as possible to your opponent, i'm not shocked by all this behavior.

my only frustration with watching UFC is when they're both exhausted and all the grappling and floor work looks like lazy "man loving". i prefer the "LET'S DO THIS" attitude, though i understand there's a lot to consider about reserving energy and waiting for the right moment to make a move.

do many ufc fighters incorporate muay thai? or are ju jitsu and taekwondo the dominant preferences in mixed martial arts?

you can see alot of muay thai influence in certain fighters kicks, there arent too many pure muay thai guys that primarily use muay thai as their dominant striking plan

off the top of my head in the UFC specifically

Anderson Silva
Alan Belcher
Shogun
Thiago Silva
and now apparently Fabricio Werdum

guys that consistently utilize kicks, knees and elbows effectively while in the stand up position

tae kwon do is rarely used at all, however Lyoto Machida is nearly a strict karate stylist in his standup...and he is damn good he made what he does very effective in respects to MMA

alot of the striking arts just use too much of your body and dont lend them selves to being apart of combinations...meaning they can be easily evaded... if you miss ull be countered or youll be easily taken to the ground

outside of the ufc its typically the same, unless you go to the lower orgs where guys are just starting out/have never adapted to MMA well that are still primarily one style guys...cuz they are still learning OR they cant seem to adapt their techniques

me personally i love the grappling, but an appreciation for grapplin only comes with good refs that know when to stand fighters up that have stalemated or negated eachother, you can tell when a fighter is tryign to set someone up and when he is just stalling or resting...so can a good ref

BJ penn is the prime example of a fighter who is VERY technical but never has a dull moment in his fights, he ALWAYS advances position and always seeks to do damage and finish the fight...he doesnt lay and pray on the ground and he doesnt back away from exchanges he can both brawl, and he can pick you apart

not to detract from bj, but i think i have a soft spot for chuck liddell. it must be the mohawk, or the little gut, lol. or maybe i just appreciate a fighter who makes every hit count. because when he makes contact, he just goes to town until you either get away or you're out.

yes, AND chuck has great defensive wrestling + good takedowns in the rare occasions he uses them

people knock him for being one dimensional when he isnt, plus i believe he has the strongest mental aspect of any fighter

the guy gets KO'd or rocked and never gets gun shy

Georges St. Pierre is a keruskin karate stylist (at least originally) and it shows if you watch the way he strikes. Chuck Liddell is actually a kempo karate striker who is also a hell of a wrestler.

Most guys start with a strong background in one style of fighting (either striking or grappling) and then add to it once they started MMA. Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Matt Lindland were all Olympic caliber greco wrestlers who then learned how to strike. Look at all the BJJ guys who learned to strike. BJ Penn, all the members of Brazilian Top Team, Matt Serra, the Diaz brothers, etc. There are tons of collegiate wrestlers who have tried to add striking, but for some reason it doesn't work as well. I can't think of a single freestyle wrestler who has added above average striking after starting their MMA career. On the whole though it seems that the most popular styles are boxing or Muay Thai combined with BJJ or wrestling.

The interesting thing is that now you have guys who are learning MMA. Look at the guys coming up through the top teams now. Chute Boxe fighters no longer learn muay thai, then bjj, then wrestling, American top team is the same way, same for Greg Jackson's guys. The new guys coming up are leaps and bounds better than people 15 years ago.

yea the way GSP strikes so light on his feet but he doesnt seem to use many combinations but because he is so light on his fight hes always sprawl ready

is that an aspect of that style of Karate or is that how GSP adapted it to mma, i know little about karate but I knew of Liddels background in Kempo

I can't spell, so here's the wiki on the type of karate GSP practiced. If you saw one of the UFC all access things he talked about having to decide between karate and hockey growing up. He picked karate and the rest is history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyokushinkai

To me the most notable things about GSP as a karate style striker are:

1 - how light he is on his feet
2 - the fact that he throws a lot of front leg kicks. The headkick that put Hughes down in their second fight was a lead leg headkick.

taken from a poster in fight forum, i noticed this same thing too during the fight that i hadnt seen from bj before

Quote :
"I noticed a new dynamic to BJ Penn's fighting style. BJ Penn really has turned up his ability to punch a person in such a way as to make them give up the position that BJ Penn wants. His punches were fairly surgical in nature with regard to when and where Penn placed the punch. Also, notice that BJ Penn did not wait at all. He started aggressively winning the match after only two or three seconds into the match. While on the ground, Penn kept actively peppering Stevenson with elbows and punches.

Man, Stevenson looks pretty sick now that he's dropped to lightweight. And to think back when he made his debut at TUF he was the one getting fuckered up and passing out in the living room!

Even if he DID get his ass beat he still probably made a quarter mil off the fight...

BJ has tremendous striking, he's got natural punching power and has continued to hone the accuracy of his punches. He also does a very good job of utilizing knees. He's going to hold the LW title as long as he wants it. I don't think Sherk has a shot in hell and after that there's nobody else even close.

Did you not see how gassed penn looked after the fight? If sherk can get to the 3rd round i think he could pound out penn.

I did want to see joe v.s. sherk though

i always wondered how sherk would do against an opponent that would be just about as thick as he is

i think joe will be a tough match for him and after Penn squeezes the pills out of his ass sherk should fight joe

i honestly want to see that one too

^lol i think BJ just had an adrenaline dump is all he wasnt gassed, thats alot of emotion

i think his cardio is fine, he never stopped durin the fight and when it was over he showed no signs of any fatigue until he got off his cornermens shoulders and the announcement finally came

the guy is extremely emotional

Sherk has no fucking chance of putting BJ on his back and that's the only way he could win the fight. BJ will end it via TKO or submission in the 2nd or 3rd round. With all the shit that Sherk has talked about Penn I think BJ will probably come in in even better shape for that fight than for this last one. BJ is motivated now, and that's a scary thought for everyone at 155 and 170.

If you want to know how good BJ Penn is then consider this, he's beaten his last 2 opponents by RNC. You just don't see guys losing by RNC very often in today's MMA game, especially guys at the level of Jens Pulver and Joe Stevenson, but BJ did it and made it look easy.

hah, hell of a fight. Joe fought his heart out... when i saw the blood i was hoping they wouldn't stop the fight early. you can tell that once he got cut he started to fight frantically to make something happen before he a.) got beat up while not being able to see through the blood, b.) got the fight stopped on him, c.)cover the floor with blood and pass out in a pool of his own tomato juice.
