also lol at the haters in this thread...i guess you guys must like britney spears and paris hilton and everybody and take them as serious artists since you have so much of a problem with a movie that makes fun of them

btw i havent seen this movie, im just trying to see where the haters are coming from cause i dont know whats so bad about making fun of shit that deserves to be made fun of

Kevin...Sorbo...Why, Kevin...Why?
I know you look good in a loincloth, but you actually HAD a career? Even with that stupid sci-fi show, it was better than this. Do you miss being Hercules THAT MUCH?

It's okay, I still love you. But when are you coming out with that country/western series you promised us? You'd look good in a cowboy hat on a horse.

They don't deserve the attention, be it good or bad.
I'd prefer it if shitty writers found something less annoying to show in their movie commercials.

/ignore and be done with it

Not only that, but if I can't stand watching those people in real life why would I want to even subject myself to parodies of them?

Quote :

Usually they use their best material on a trailer and I found the trailer quite repulsive. I can only imagine how bad the rest of it is.

no but at least the movie will be making fun of these people instead of saying "and Paris Hilton was spotted at Club So and So this weekend...blah blah blah she's great...blah blah blah here's more Paris, all of you viewers should worship her"

i'm not trying to get people to like this movie...i haven't even seen it, maybe it does suck...i just don't get the reasoning behind some of the hate, as it seems like the movie is making fun of the things that the haters already dislike

Chill out people. $18.7 million for a weekend is a pittance. All that does is show you that nobody went out to see movies this weekend. The only surprise to me is that Cloverfield didn't top the box office for a 2nd week. That movie took in $46 million last weekend.

18.7 doesn't mean anything, it doesn't mean anyone really loves this movie.

I guess because from what I've seen from the advertisements the parodies and humor are at a sub Mad TV level, and that's a difficult feat to pull off.

Seriously, the film looks as though it is on the level of parodies you'd see from 12 year olds that post vids on youtube.

well i love naked gun and airplane type movies, and i'll be the first to admit that Epic Movie (for example) completely sucked except for like 3-4 funny parts...but I've also seen the Scary Movie movies and some of the other 'over the top comedy' movies that actually were pretty funny...funny enough for me to eventually download and watch this

wait....so The Soup's entire premise is to make fun of pop culture and reality tv, etc...yet they have a problem with a movie whose entire premise is to make fun of pop culture and reality tv?

no i guess i don't get it

it actually seems to me that The Soup and Meet The Spartans would have quite the overlapping audience

but please, continue to give a shit what movies other people care about

and i'm assuming you haven't seen meet the spartans either, so how exactly are you so sure that they're nothing alike?

and referring to The Soup's audience as intelligent.......

you're the one who created a movie thread with the sole purpose of trolling anyone who thought it looked remotely humorous

i'd still like you to address my statement about the movie and the soup both making fun of pop culture and how they're so different...course you won't address it because it might offend your precious soup, which only intelligent people watch

like i said, I like The Soup, but I wouldn't call any show on E! anything remotely "intelligent"

the soup says:
look at the shit on tv. look how fucking stupid this is. do people really take these shows seriously?

parody movies like meet the spartans say:
hey, remember that thing from that movie? now we're going seriously try to parody it. get it?

one, a mockery, is on the outside looking in, rolling its eyes at all the shit that comes out of these serious TV shows. the other, a parody, is trying to be legitimately funny in its own right through its own material. if you can't understand the difference between parody and mockery then I can't really explain it any further.

I'm not saying that the soup doesn't do its own parodies from time to time but I've always found them to be intentionally campy.

i dunno...with The Soup, and I'm guessing with Meet The Spartans, even though I haven't seen it, it seems like they both just want you to laugh at how stupid a lot of pop culture stuff is

cause The Soup is trying to be legitimately funny by making jokes that make fun of all the reality tv shows

this movie seems like its doing the same thing

but both of them need stupid pop culture to have material

btw 'The Comebacks' is pretty funny, watched it last night

and I dont think there's anything wrong with parodies. though I do think that parodies that simply strive to mention as many pop culture references as possible are missing the idea

SPOILERS

just read this plot synopsis and decide if ANY of the gags sound funny on paper, let alone shot on film

Quote :
"The film opens with a Spartan elder inspecting a Shrekish baby, he then proceeds to kiss it with the narrator paraphrasing the words of Dilios in the movie 300 about the Spartan selectiveness of their citizens. The baby is rejected and punted off the hill, with the next baby presented to Brangelina because it was Vietnamese. Baby Leonidas is then inspected, having a six-pack, biceps, and beard from birth. He is accepted as a Spartan and prepared for his kinghood through his childhood training, from fighting his grandmother to enduring James Bond-style torture. Leonidas is then cast out into the wild, and survives the harsh winter while killing a giant penguin.

Returning a king for his inauguration ceremony, Leonidas sees Margot dancing and asks her to marry him, to which she responds by giving him the combination to her chastity belt. The film then fast forwards to where the story begins, opening with Leonidas training his son, until Captain informs him that a Persian messenger has arrived to present Xerxes's demands for Sparta's submission. Leonidas arrives to greet the messenger in the Spartan way (high-fives for the women and open mouth tongue kisses for the men). After growing angry with the messenger's disrespect, Leonidas kicks him, the messenger's bodyguards, and then several other people he just plain disliked, ranging from "Britney Spears" to notorious Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar, into "The Pit of Death".

Resolving to face the Persians, Leonidas visits the Oracle, proposing a "sex-themed" strategy to repel the numerically superior enemy, and offers the priests various skin-care lotions. However, the Oracle, Ugly Betty, reveals that Leonidas will die should he go to war. That night, Leonidas and Margo then decide to have sex before Leonidas heads out (which in fact is just Leonidas bench pressing his wife numerous times). Leonidas then goes out to meet the soldiers collected for his departure, and finds that only 13 (not 300) came to the call of war, three among them being Captain, his son (Sonio), and a slightly unfit Spartan named Dilio. The 13 hold hands and skip behind Leonidas to Thermopylae, where they meet Paris Hilton (with a humpback and her left arm deformed), whom they rejected from joining their army. Leonidas and his platoon soon face off with Xerxes's messenger and his Immortals, beating them in a dance contest before driving them off of a cliff. Xerxes, impressed, personally approaches Leonidas and attempts to bribe him in a Deal or No Deal fashion. The Spartan king declines, saying that he will instead make the "God King" fall. The Spartans then face the Xerxes army in a "yo momma" fight, ending with a victory in spite of Dilio having his eyes scratched out.

Though victory seemed to in the Spartans' grasp, Paris Hilton reveals the location of the goat path to Xerxes, having been promised her hump removed among her demands. Using a CGI army, Xerxes overpowers the 12 remaining Greeks. However, though his army was defeated, however, Xerxes finds the Transformer cube and transforms a convertible into his suit of armor, playing the Chris Crocker 'Leave Britney Alone' video. But "Xerxestron" ends up delivering on Leonidas's promise to "fall", though he crushed the surviving Spartans under his bulk. The blind Dilio, who left prior to the final battle, eventually returns to Sparta to tell of Leonidas' final moments. A year later, Dilio leads a force of 100 real Spartans and several thousand more CGI ones to defeat the Persians, but he ends up going the wrong way and leads the Spartans to Malibu, crashing into Lindsay Lohan while she was coming out of rehab again, leaving her bare crotch exposed.
"

granted, if you're not paying to see it I probably don't care. but a lot of people have and will pay to see this, which is just disappointing to me since I like to use my brain and value a society that does so as well.

much of the stuff in that summary looks pretty dumb

but i've also seen some dumb previews when the movie itself has actually been funny

I just think the whole "what has happened to our society if people watch this movie" thing is a bit off, because I for one would watch this because its supposed to make fun of the very things that have dumbed down our society. Now I could see a point of view that thinks when pop culture has enough crap over the last year or whatever to make a whole movie about it, society is kind of mentally fucked. But I look at this movie, at least the premise, as something that shows that not everybody is obsessing to watch American Idol or the Paris and Nicole show or whatever, but some think that stuff is mindless and simply want to see other people (ie The Soup, this movie) put it in its place

if/when i finally do watch it i'll let you know what i think cause like i said i thought Epic Movie was HORRIBLE but some of the other parody movies are pretty good

A McDonald's cheeseburger and a Ruth's Chris steak are both food. I don't understand how they are different.

The issue isn't whether or not making fun of pop culture can be entertaining. The issue is the quality of the product.

Quote :

It looks like they took some dumb material and dumbed it down further. There are clever ways to do satire and there are ways to do satire where you are doing nothing more than mentioning pop culture references one after the other.

Oh look, he kicked Brittany Spears in a pit. I'd sure love to do that. WOAH. Now they just kicked that dude from American Idol in. We've all wanted to do that at one point in time. This stuff is hilarious. OMGROFLMAO. Paris Hilton has a hump on her back. Serves her right!

This movie got a 3% on rotten tomatoes. 3%. Other satirical movies didn't get such a bad rating. Perhaps there is a right way to do satire and a wrong way and "Meet the Spartans" did it the wrong way. But I digress. If you find this movie enjoyable then that is your opinion. Everyone has different tastes.

anyway - I downloaded the movie, watched 10 minutes, then immediately deleted it.
