here's a useless fact that corrects someone elses useless fact. male platypus are actually one of only a select few mammals that are VENOMOUS.

venom does not equal poison, as snakes are also venomous not poisonous. venom is injected, poison ingested.

the reason the same side of the moon always faces earth is because the moon is actually more dense on that side.

^ I don't think that's true.

I can see that being a technical result of gravitational tidal lock, but that's not WHY the moon always faces the earth.

In general, moons, being of smaller mass (and thus much lower angular momentums relative to their parent planet) will form tidal locks with their parent planet.

the core of the moon is skewed towards the earth by some 400 miles from center but that isnt why the same side faces the earth

it just happens to be in geosynchronous rotation

the rotation and revolution periods of the moon are equal

It's true. I learned in an NCSU astronomy course, actually. You guys are explaying why we see the same side through synchronous rotation. I'm explaining it using the explanation for synchronous rotation.

Quote :
"This synchronous rotation is caused by an unsymmetrical distribution of mass in the Moon, which has allowed Earth's gravity to keep one lunar hemisphere permanently turned toward Earth. Optical librations have been observed telescopically since the mid-17th century. Very small but real librations (maximum about 0°.04) are caused by the effect of the Sun's gravity and the eccentricity of Earth's orbit, perturbing the Moon's orbit and allowing cyclical preponderances of torque in both east-west and north-south directions. "

the uneven distribution of mass is a result of the geosynchronous rotation of the moon not vice-versa.

Mathematically at some point the Earth's orbit will become geosynchronous to the sun as tidal forces from the moon exert a torque on the earth's rotation slowing it down. Granted this will take billions of years which will probably witness the death of the sun before it actually occurs. This has been shown and in fact the orbital rotation of the earth slows a few microseconds each year. Thus we all get longer days even if minute over the course of centuries.

June 18th (on non-leap years) is the 169th day into the year, with 196 days left in the year after it.

This is interesting because those numbers are 13^2 and 14^2. These are consecutive squares. And it is my birthday.

Per square foot paper is stronger than steel on a planar basis (if you twist it it will tear), and one single sheet of 8.5x11" paper will hold a 250 lb person (once again so long as you don't twist or wrinkle it, I have seen this done).

Also not so useless... recycling paper is worse for the environment than actually making it to begin with, there are many chemicals that have to be used to repulp paper, it doesn't just fall apart in water
