Tsonga is on FIRE at the end of the second set. He aced the first three points of the last game in the second. w-t-f. Nadal has no answers at the moment.

damn. I was hoping to see Federer/Nadal in a finals on a surface other than clay or grass. i'll probably pull for Djokovich now.

tennis is so underappreciated as a spectator sport.

[Edited on January 24, 2008 at 4:05 PM. Reason : at least in america, where it's not a sport if people don't get fucked up.]

^agreed, plus it's a sport where the woman's game is competitive with the men, and sometimes even better to watch since it's not as serve dominated

I'd say tennis is one of the best sports for females and basketball is by far the worst

I wouldn't say Federer is falling off, granted, I only pay attention to Grand Slam results. He's always struggled with Nadal, and Djokovich has been playing excellent tennis. The upset wasn't a huge surprise. The finals should be interesting.

i think this is because a male that considers himself a good player at either sport watches a WNBA game will think "hey i can execute a lay up on a breakaway and i can shoot a mid-range jumper...i could hang with these chicks"...whereas when the same person watches a women's tennis match knows he would get smoked by any of them.

women's tennis still has that "wow" factor due to sheer talent, much like women's soccer (and i don't even like soccer)

nah women's soccer is pretty much the same as women's basketball in my book.

Women's tennis is fun to watch over other women's sports because the sport isn't as much based on speed/strength/physical ability as it is technique and precision. Women can compete with men in those facets.

..... you do know that the best womens tennis player would get crushed by the best mens right?

have you even played tennis?

^right, but it would be a lot better of a match than a man v. woman basketball, boxing, wrestling, etc... match would be.

She destroyed him. Straight sets. And I'm betting Serena Williams on a good day could knock off some of the guys too who are higher up near the 100's in rankings.

I agree that the quality of women's tennis is excellent, though they'd still get walloped by the men. Case in point:

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/osm/story/0,,543962,00.html

However, to say women's soccer is high quality If you watched a men's game and women's game on TV side by side, the quality of the latter is abysmal in comparison.

here's one guy hoping sharapova loses

something about her game just annoys me, she just flails wildy out there on every shot, I don't know how she doesn't pile up the errors

and I admire intensity but there is a point where you should just keep some of it to yourself, no need to screech on every shot and pump your fist and scream after every other winner

her dad should take it easy too, no need to look like you'd just as well have maria kill her opponent in the stands

I absolutely think Tsonga is going to be good and the real deal. The way he is playing right now cannot be a fluke. I think it is great for tennis that Federer and Nadal got beat. Hopefully this is ushering in a new era of competitive tennis. I like Tsonga but Djokovich has quickly been becoming my favorite of the last year.

The Hantuchova-Ivanovic match was a nice one to watch as well as the finals with Sharapova. win/win! I went to bed happy

It's nice to see better looking girls that can go deep in tourneys. Too bad for Kournikova.

Quote :
"From a courtside seat, Tsonga's father, Didier, threw a few shadow uppercuts to punctuate the moment, a gesture that resonated on several levels. The former international team handball player from the Congo attended Muhammad Ali's famous "Rumble in the Jungle" championship fight against George Foreman in 1974 in Zaire. About 10 years later, he and his wife, Evelyne, had a son whose uncanny resemblance to the young Ali emerged early on.

he was taken to be arrogant by the fans. also the parents seemed to be little bitches in the beginning when djokovic was losing (calling security multiple times complaining about the tsonga fans around them -- might have been legitimate if there was taunting going on or something but there's no way to know)
