"I don't think you quite realize how much of a political hit it was to him at the time. It eventually lead to the Southern strategy etc. Johnson had to have the balls to sign that piece of legislation."

If there was one thing that LBJ was, though, it was a master politician. I'm fairly sure that given the momentum of the Civil Rights movement, while the cost in the South was appreciable, the goodwill it engendered elsewhere more than offset the cost. LBJ was far from JFK - the signing the Civil Rights At was not a moral imperative to him - it was simply good politics.

Fool Me Thrice
It should be no surprise that the Clintons are playing the race card.

Quote :
"How can one equal Bill Clinton for thuggery and opportunism when it comes to the so-called 'race card'? And where does one even start with the breathtaking nastiness of his own conduct, and that of his supporters, in the last week? Barack Obama carries South Carolina having made no sectarian appeal to any specific kind of voter, and the best Clinton can say is that this is no better than Jesse Jackson managed to do. Really? Did Jackson come south having already got himself elected the senator from Illinois? And, come to think of it, was Jackson so much to be despised and sneered at when he was needed as Clinton's 'confessor,' along with Billy Graham, during the squalor of impeachment?"

NB: I also heard reporter Bob Novak say he has heard from credible sources that Obama and Edwards may have cut a deal to defeat Clinton: John Edwards will be appointed attorney general. More later, I'm sure.

Edwards was previously painting himself as resolute in running. i.e. "I'm not quitting, I've got a message so I'm going to win"

But he's a lawyer, so I won't be surprised by any shady deal he uses his electorate votes to win himself.

Sharpton to Bill Clinton: 'Shut Up'

Quote :
"ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: Rev. Al Sharpton on Monday weighed in on the raging debate inside the Democratic Party over former President Bill Clinton's advocacy on behalf of his wife's campaign, with two choice words for the former president: 'Shut up.'

On ABC's 'The View,' Sharpton said voters are hearing 'race charges, race-tinged rhetoric' in the Democratic primary campaign, and called on the former president to cease.

'I think it's time for him to just be quiet,' said Sharpton, who was a Democratic presidential candidate in 2004. 'I think it's time for him to stop. As one of the most outspoken people in America, there's a time to shut up, and I think that time has come.'"

WILD BILL CLINTON STRIKES AGAIN

Quote :
"January 27, 2008 -- WASHINGTON - Shoot-from-the-lip Bill Clinton has struck again.

A day after Barack Obama's overwhelming victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton in South Carolina, the spotlight was back on the former president - this time for dismissive comments he made comparing the Illinois senator's campaign to the failed presidential candidacies of the Rev. Jesse Jackson."

BILL CLINTON'S BIGMOUTH OF THE SOUTH

Quote :
"January 28, 2008 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Clinton attributed her husband's comments to emotion.

'Well, I think it's human nature. I think that the spouses of all three of us have, you know, been passionate and vigorous defenders of each of us and, you know, maybe got a little carried away,' she said on CBS's 'Face the Nation.'

She chalked it up to 'sleep deprivation' on the campaign trail.

Liberal bloggers were outraged by Bill Clinton's comparison of Obama to Jackson.

Mickey Kaus, writing on the Web magazine Slate, called the comment an 'attempted ghettoization' of Obama's candidacy.

Obama responded on ABC's 'This Week' yesterday that Clinton was dwelling in the past.

'I think that that's his frame of reference - the Jesse Jackson races,' Obama said.

'That's when, you know, he was active and involved and watching what was going to take place in South Carolina.

'I think that a lot of South Carolinians [last week] looked at it through a different lens.'"

1. You don't know shit about me--stop pretending that you do.

2. I'm not a "neoconservative"--you don't even know what it means.

3. I would be thrilled to vote for a "Black man," as you put it, for president--but not Obama. I simply disagree with his positions on too many issues.

4. Stop looking at me and other conservatives as fitting some stupid cartoon image in your head.

5. The thread topic is Democrats and their race issues--not your hooksaw derangement syndrome. Try to focus, okay?

^you see hooksaw, its impossible for any republican to not like Obama's policies and voting record..if you disagree with him you are simply racist.(that will no doubt be the excuse, as you have seen)

You think the clintons are having a time with it, wait till a republican "attacks" him on his record.
