pssshhh, in that case every movie is formulaic cause all it is is characters following some plot and there are usually credits at the end

Do you begin to understand that "formulaic" and "open to interpretation" are not mutually exclusive?

i knew that, every franchise has some formula but considering how one batman is so different from the other i wouldnt say its formulaic

it was always a little strange to me how casino royale was like the first chronological bond movie, but it had the newest gadgets (defibrillator in the car)

but then again i would have been disappointed if they were like "here 007, a telephone device that you can take with you anywhere and it will work!"

yeah, but Casino Royale also took place in modern-day. If they had placed it back in 1950, i'm sure they would have adjusted the gadgets, but then again it would have been boring as hell to us in 2008

CR hyped itself on the position that it would have no gadgets

then they go and put the defibrillator in the glove compartment...

that really is the only gadget that i remember them having though

unless you count the bug that they put in Le Schiffe's inhaler, but a bug isn't really a gadget

a defibrilator doesn't classify as a "gadget"

that's a common medical device in sophisticated first aid kits

i'd bet you'd qualify a cell phone as a non-gadget also...

it's not a gadget in the "Bond" sense. Bond gadgets are always ridiculous devices that would likely never be useful unless the plot called for an absurd situation in which the device could be used

like a defibrillator that just happens to be in the glove compartment of his car when bond is going into cardiac arrest?

[Edited on April 20, 2008 at 8:50 PM. Reason : a defribillator that sends information back to HQ so everyone can monitor his vitals while he dies..]

that's an odd place to have it, but at least it's a reasonable device. It's not like it's a gondola hovercraft, invisible car, or a watch that shoots rockets.

each of those are also reasonable devices

why else would they be in the movies?

They have emergency defibrillators on the wall at work here, it isn't far fetched that he would have one in his car. When you think Bond gadgets, you think of things that were specifically designed for a double-0 agent to use in the field that only secret agents would have IE exploding pen grenades, super powered magnetic watches that can deflect bullets, jet powered cars with skis on them. A defibrillator doesn't exactly fall into the same category.

without it he would have died

without it he couldn't have finished through the rest of the story

that is the very definition of a "gadget" in the Bond universe--some sort of device that gets him out of a life thretening situation so that he may continue on in a story

just because its a famliar and modern device doesn't make it not a gadget

i finally saw casino royal, after first only making it 30 minute i gotta say around the 1:30 mark i was pretty impressed, still didnt think it was a bond flick but it was good, unfortunately after the weird honeymoon the movie didnt stop, if it had stopped it would've been good but no, they had to kill the girl and worse we have to see her die unnecessarily and worse she was doing a good deed
what kind of bond flick is this?
that is not what bond is about, its about shooting people for fun, drinking martinings, bangin 10 broads, and laughing it up at the end,
they had better not do this again or i'll withdraw from this franchise
at least therer's still batman and matrix

And yeah, the watch that deflects bullets is in Live and Let Die, but he never actually uses it to do so. They even did a James Bond special on Mythbusters to try and make some of his gadgets and the watch one failed miserably.

if youre going to talk about bond movies you have to realize that the first ones are old as SHIT. if you watch ANY movies that were that old now the first reaction should be 'what the fuck'. they just didnt pay attention to reality and it showed. they are good cause theyre the classic movies but they use the formula as you call it of action movies of their own time.

for bond movies to stay popular, they had to update them. could you imagine seeing fake ass paint spatters as wounds in a decent movie now? thats just a minor thing, but the same idea goes for the story line and screenplay - but not stupid diamond doomsday sun-laser bullshit story lines. it has to be a little unreal to be entertaining but still stay within the confines of the genre. casino royale is pretty well balanced.

I thought Casino Royale was stupid as hell and I stopped watching about 15 minutes into it...then I gave it another shot and really enjoyed it

I will definitely be watching this new flick

I wasnt a casino royale fan, but i absolutely abhor vin diesel type action movies. (had 0 interest in seeing "The Marine" either). I didnt hate the movie or anything, it just didnt do much for me. Then again i've never been able to get into James Bond movies in general the way some people do.
