Are you going to get lockable differentials? A guy I know with a wrangler (I think it's a TJ) has a ton of shit done to his. He's got it lifted with big tires, lots of suspension work, skid plates everywhere you can put them, a really short final drive so he can just crawl along in 1st and lockable differentials. You just pull a cable to lock up the diff, it's pretty cool. His shit is serious, I've gone back into the woods with him and just run over trees and shit, you can just bend them over and snap them in half. It's kind of funny though because sometimes they'll spring the back end up into the air as you go over them, haha.
We can take it out on my friend's 250 acre property in Orange County. He's got an old logging site in his back yard. So there are hundreds of stumps and paths as well as thousands of downed trees. Getting back there is insane because there's no path. You just have to run over hundreds of 2"-5" thick trees to get through to the logging road and then you can get in there. It's some crazy shit back in there and it's a lot of fun. The dude has more money than he knows what to do with it seems.

Realistically probably 4-5 inches of lift actually. It was 4 inch coils, and a 1.75 spacer, but these coils have sagged a lot. An inch at the minimum. 15x8, 3.5 BS, 35x12.5 MTRs. Don't get them.

The dude's setup is serious though, he's invested well over $10,000 into that jeep on shit that actually does something. It is a very serious machine. Nothing in that post should have caused you to slap your forehead. I've seen what happens when you have open diffs trying to go over large stumps and shit, the lockable diffs helped BIG TIME. It's a night and day difference and it's a perfectly legitimate question to ask.

Zuber works for FabFours last i heard. He was however doing sidejobs here around salisbury. Short arms are just fine if you dont mind a rough ride. I ordered parts for long arms, and the main reason is that it will really beat you up poking along down the trail. It flexes more than enough, shocks limit me, just enough to keep the coils seated, so when i go to long arms i will run the same amount of travel. Going down the road it is fine. 9/26/2008 8:07:23 PM |

Yeah, i'm gonna cut out most of that rust and put some fresh sheet metal over those holes when I get home from work today.
The main hole that needs to be fixed is directly under the passenger seat. With the cat being located right underneat the hole, it seriously heated up the interior of the jeep when I went out in it last night!
Prolly just fiberglass over the smaller holes though. 9/29/2008 8:52:04 AM |

What do you guys think about Aussie Lockers?
Found a super cheap one for my D35 rear. I'm welding the front D30 diff.
Definitely upgrading once these break though. 10/1/2008 12:14:18 PM |
adam8778 All American 3095 Posts user info edit post |
i would put the locker in the front, and if you want to lock the 35, weld it.
Reasons: It will turn better. A 35 lock-rite(or aussie, they are all the same) will have nearly zero resale value, but more people want a used 30 locker. dont spend a penny on a 35, the money lost in welding consumables is more than you should spend on a 35 10/1/2008 12:20:08 PM |

congratulations on recommending a shop that's been closed for at least a year. as has been said, andy went to work for fabfours.
anyway, you definitely want to repair that rust well. obviously, being a unibody vehicle it gets a lot of its structural integrity from the body and they have enough trouble staying together without any rust. while you're messing with the body, might as well go ahead and cut the rockers out too and replace them with some box tubing. that'll help stiffen things up a bit, give additional clearance over "normal" sliders, and offer protection.
i also agree with ^. don't put a dime into that d35. i don't know that i'd even waste welding wire/rods on it. an already very weak axle becomes an even bigger liability when welded, especially the carrier. normally with most stuff i'd just say go for it and beat it until it breaks, but i've heard too many horror stories of d35's locking up in just normal street/highway driving as a result of a catastrophic failure. just a locker up front will make a world of difference.
don't weld the front. as mentioned, a welded/spooled front end steers like ass even compared to a mechanical ratcheting style locker. your radius will go to hell, and your arms and steering system will hate you for the extra stress they impose. not to mention it would be ridiculous on the street if it's not a vacuum disconnect axle (i think most xj's are?). or, in the event the disco won't disengage which commonly happens if you have a vacuum leak, the diaphragm fails, you bang it on a rock and screw up the internal rod/collar, etc.
the aussies are good lockers though. comparable to lock rites in terms of design and operation, but they seem to hold up just slightly better and they have a better warranty. i highly doubt you'd manage to break one with the stock drivetrain.10/1/2008 12:55:49 PM |

58 inches wms to wms will probably work but if I were you I'd wait to find a wider set of axles. 60" and 59.5" or so are your stock axle widths. If you're going to all of the work to swap axles I'd never go narrower. Get a set of ford axles (44/9) and swap those in. 10/3/2008 12:20:17 PM |

here's another rear axle choice if you wanted it; it'd bolt right up and already has a locker, just depends on what gears you currently have.

Guy only wants $400 for the set of D44's though...could prolly get'em for $325 or so...seemed pretty eager to sell.
Is 1.5" gonna make that much of a difference?
I could actually afford some nice lockers and re-gear them for that price...
