aaronburro is spot on. I'm not proposing that we let poor people die on the streets, but the more handouts the govt gives to poor people, the less incentive they have to better themselves. I don't care what anyone says, if someone wants to be successful in this country badly enough, he/she can (Chris Gardner). Ofcourse it may be a hell of a lot harder for some people than others, but life ain't fair, deal with it. You can't have the government going around trying to equalize everything. If you can't afford health insurance, drive an older car, cancel your cable TV. If you can't afford to provide your children with health insurance, DON'T HAVE CHILDREN. The main problem with this country is that people don't want to be responsible for themselves anymore. The more the govt bails people out for making bad decisions (mortgage crisis), the more bad decisions people are going to continue to make.

I agree with you on everything but this. Kids SHOULD be taken care of by government, should the parents not have the means to do so. It's the only area that I feel socially responsible to the masses and would gladly give my tax money.

You misunderstood what I said. Kids should definitely be taken care of reguardless of their parents stupidity. However, parents should be responsible for their children first and foremost.

this is more accurate. government (aka OTHER PEOPLE) shouldn't have to take care of children whose parents are irresponsible (aka lazy, or have kids when they shouldn't). i'm all for taking care of people without choice, without the capacity to take care of themselves, but that's where it stops.

Eight ball on Edwards endorsement

It's time to pit the Huffington Post against everyone's favorite fortune-telling desk toy.

An item on the Huffington Post is predicting that John Edwards will endorse Barack Obama tonight in Michigan.

The Obama campaign has announced a "major national endorsement" for a rally tonight at 7pm in Michigan, and the rumor mill is swirling that it is none other than Sen. John Edwards.

The Magic Eight Ball's take: "Yes Definitely."

I think Obama will be getting a lot of new foot soldiers and funds through here tonight:
https://donate.barackobama.com/johnedwards

I wasn't planning on donating to Obama again for a while, but I think if it helps send a message that NC is in play, then all the better.

just did a little preliminary googling (not confirming that these sources are right)

but they say edwards is worth 70 million and seacrest apparently earns $14 million a year

who knows? edwards probably has the edge for now, but it won't stand for long.

"Edwards' campaign put his assets at $29.5 million.

The report showed that Edwards, a lawyer, made $1.2 million in income in 2006, including about $480,000 from Fortress Investment Group, a New York hedge fund.

That revelation has caused some controversy, given that Edwards has made combating poverty a centerpiece of his campaign, and he recently reimbursed his campaign for a $400 haircut.

However, Edwards has been defending his commitment to the poor, saying he worked at Fortress to learn about financial markets and their relationship to poverty."

Seacrest is probably worth more--but all this misses the point of Miller's comparison.

Ingenuine? What's that, kinda like distruthy?

Kerry was a silly fag for trying to get a promise from Edwards not to run against him in '08. What kinda request is that anyway? Kerry had to know that '04 was his only chance at the presidency.

From the article dnl posted:

Quote :
"Kerry talked with several potential picks, including Gephardt and Edwards. He was comfortable after his conversations with Gephardt, but even queasier about Edwards after they met. Edwards had told Kerry he was going to share a story with him that he'd never told anyone else—that after his son Wade had been killed, he climbed onto the slab at the funeral home, laid there and hugged his body, and promised that he'd do all he could to make life better for people, to live up to Wade's ideals of service. Kerry was stunned, not moved, because, as he told me later, Edwards had recounted the same exact story to him, almost in the exact same words, a year or two before—and with the same preface, that he'd never shared the memory with anyone else. Kerry said he found it chilling, and he decided he couldn't pick Edwards unless he met with him again."

What a douche bag, using his own dead son for political gain. Heartless this man is.

That said, if true that's a pretty fucked up story.

why do you have to justify things? It's dirty and it's nasty and it shows that John Edwards' soul is up for lease.

I'm not saying he's the only politician to use a dead relative for political gain, but when you find another, post in here and we'll talk about them.

If true? It was in TIME and the source WAS RIGHT THERE WHEN IT WAS SAID.

nobody can judge a man who's had to bury his son.

nobody can judge a dad who's had to bury his little boy.

nobody.

you little cunts don't understand that now, so you can gloat and strut and front all you want, but mark my words... one day you'll begin to understand.

But you better hope to fucking god that you don't ever have to fully understand.

I'm not judging him on the grief he went through over burrying his own son.

I am saying that he is clearly using the story for his gain, telling it over and over (twice to Kerry) allthewhile maintaining that he had never told anyone that story.

That's the very definition of a scumbag.

Maybe he sincerely forgot he told it the first time. I don't think it's likely but you never know. My boyfriend will often tell me the same story several times as if it were the first time. But he's not forgetful about other things; he's weird like that.

I mean, something with as much depth and meaning as that story of crawling into the casket and hugging your dead son... you don't forget that.

And he told Kerry twice. I mean, if you preface it with "I never told anybody this before"...

I'm just saying.

i was watching that new Election race show on MSNBC last night and some complete idiot said the only way for Obama to carry NC would be to put Edwards on the ticket.

apparently anyone can be an expert on this state, and that is unacceptable. if Edwards was on the ticket IMO it would just give it to McCain. the man offers nothing to NC anymore.

i mean that doesn't even take thought. he couldn't carry this state in '04, what makes them think he would deliver in '08. but whatever. i'm just happy that this state will be campaigned in at all this year for president.
