In the first period??? It wasn't a natural hat trick was it? I just saw the score and was like 3/3/2008 8:13:01 PM |

Wasn't a natural. Now he is trying out his passing skills, repaying Backstrom for the three helpers on the goals by feeding him on a breakaway goal. 3/3/2008 8:20:19 PM |

What's a natural hat trick? Does it just mean no power-play goals? 3/3/2008 8:21:31 PM |
Vulcan91 All American 13893 Posts user info edit post |
Natural is where you score 3 goals in a row in the same period. Bradley scored between his 2nd and 3rd goals, so it isn't a natural. 3/3/2008 8:25:20 PM |

A natural hat trick is just three consecutive goals, same period or not. However, when I say consecutive, I mean it...it's not natural if someone else from either team scores in between your goals.
So this is a natty:
1st 19:32 St. Louis (Lecavalier, Smith) 1st 18:10 Ovechkin (Semin, Backstrom) 1st 12:41 Ovechkin (Backstrom) 3rd 2:19 Ovechkin (Brashear) 3rd 00:12 Laich (Poti)
But this isn't:
1st 3:42 Ovechkin (Kolzig) 2nd 4:53 Cooke (Fedorov, Ovechkin) 2nd 1:10 Ovechkin (Backstrom) 3rd 14:32 Ovechkin (Semin) 3/4/2008 3:11:28 AM |

Assists are nothing...it's really ace when a goalie scores.
Five goalies have scored in an NHL game: Ron Hextall (twice), Chris Osgood, Martin Brodeur (twice), Jose Theodore, and Evgeni Nabokov. Billy Smith, Damian Rhodes, Mika Noronen, and Chris Mason have been credited with goals, but they didn't actually shoot the puck into the empty net. 3/4/2008 2:06:37 PM |

^ i didn't see that hit, but i'm not so sure that he doesn't get bothered
every time the pens play the caps, ovechkin tries to make some kind of sportscentre top 10 hit on malkin
sometimes with lolworthy results, e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZkPn9kjRFE 3/9/2008 9:02:13 PM |

When I say he doesn't get bothered, I mean that he' not going to take issue with every bump he takes, whereas a player like Briere is going to be crowing for his agitators every time he gets finished in the corner. 3/9/2008 9:14:04 PM |

Good, jack him up!!!
Remember the game earlier this season where he goes SLASHED IN THE FACE, had his NOSE BROKEN, then came right back into the game and scored 4 goals and an assist!?
I was actually at that game!!
pictures taken after Ovechkin got the hat trick... you can see some hats on the ice.

Alexander the Great has certainly lived up to his nickname this season and throughout his short and brilliant career, as he has already become the first player in franchise history to record 100 points twice in a Caps' uniform. His empty-net marker was his league-leading 58th goal of the season and he now sits atop the NHL scoring race with a fantastic 102 points this season. In fact, Ovechkin has now amassed a ridiculous 300 points in just 237 career games, over the course of the past three seasons. Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Matt Bradley scored the Caps' other goals on Tuesday night. Mar. 19 - 3:43 am et" |

What team do you think would Ovechkin just flourish on, Wayne Gretzski style? 3/19/2008 1:28:17 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
There are no longer any teams that play like the great Gretzky teams. For one, every team in the league is now much more focused on defense, and better coached, too. In addition, in terms of pure scoring numbers, it's important to note that goaltending has advanced by leaps and bounds. Look at how any given goalie reacts to a Gretzky breakaway in video from 1981 (the year he scored 92 goals and had 50 in 39 games), then look at how a goalie today reacts to Ovechkin. 3/19/2008 1:33:15 PM |

I feel as if my friend Philip lied to me about Ovechkin being the next Wayne Gretzky.
If Ovechkin scores a goal and an assist in the final eight games and then the Caps make it through 28 games of post-season play, keeping the same pace, there could be a 150 point season.
So no, I guess not. 3/19/2008 1:52:13 PM |
Dammit100 All American 17605 Posts user info edit post |
even if someone is "the next Gretzky," like Brian said, the way the game is played now is so much different than in 99's era that it's next to impossible to put up those gaudy numbers. 3/19/2008 1:55:15 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
Playoffs don't count in season scoring anyway.
Ovechkin doesn't have the pure scoring/passing skill of Gretzky, but he's a much better all-around player. Gretzky couldn't hit if he wanted to, and he wasn't good in the corners without some wiggle room. Why do you think he had to have TWO enforcers? On top of that, as assists go, Ovechkin doesn't have the supporting cast that Gretzky did, and the Caps don't hang forwards for whole shifts. 3/19/2008 1:56:13 PM |
