rained yesterday and suppose to rain today and tomorrow. Pole day will probably be limited to the real teams that have a chance of actually being on pole as they most likely will have to extend morning practice.

Early but I'm going with Dixon on pole. Marco on the front row with Kanaan too.

Contenders for the pole:

The Big Four (Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Scott Dixon)

Best of the Rest (Marco Andretti, Danica Patrick)

The Longshot (Tomas Scheckter)

Surprised at how poorly Andretti Green performed. 5-6-7-9. All of their cars got beat by both Ganassi and both Penske cars. And then one car had to go again for a crewman's error. I think they sent out Marco and saw he only gained 0.25mph on his second run and thought they couldn't get any faster.

I think another reason cars didn't try to improve late was that no one was really improving speed and also Hunter-Reay's crash scared everyone.

Good runs for Meira and Carpenter.

what I don't get it

I mean her entire crew is like 10 people and most of it is family members. They have ONE car, no parts, 20 or so laps all month, and that is why I don't think she will finish more than mid pack, assuming not getting in a wreck. Probably 3 laps down I'd imagine. Cars get spread out at Indy, and being 500 miles, well you've been to the race

If you only care about who wins, there's really only four contenders outside of strategy, rain, and flukes. Kanaan, Dixon, Wheldon, Castroneves. Look at where they've finished in the four races this year:

Homestead: Dixon 1st, Wheldon 3rd, Castroneves 4th, Kanaan 8th (and he was winning if a car hadn't wrecked in front of him with 8 laps left)

St. Pete: Castroneves 2nd, Kanaan 3rd, Wheldon 12th, Dixon 22nd (DNF due to mechanical issues)

Motegi: Castroneves 2nd, Dixon 3rd, Wheldon 4th, Kanaan 5th

Kansas: Wheldon 1st, Kanaan 2nd, Dixon 3rd, Castroneves 4th

So out of a possible 16 places in the Top 4 of the 4 races they've competed in, these guys have taken 12 of them.

And that's why I have the utmost respect for her, her family, and what they're doing. They are putting their financial livelihoods on the line to race.

Oh OK I get ya now. Well Rahal did win a race, and it will take time for the crossover teams to get prepared

Fisher has to get recognition for whats she's doing, but nobody watching is going to give her a chance to finish strong; just like the 'new' teams need some time, so will she, and she isn't getting it. I do think a last minute sponsor will show up for her because its a big story.

speaking of Indy, the earliest pic of me watching the race with my own awesome car that my sis put together. I'd guess 1988 on this pic, maybe 1987......

watching the last little bit of practice. 36 cars on the track today, and J Andretti is in the top 10

Briscoe wrecked his backup car

tomorrow will be interesting. The race should be good too.

It's getting nervy for the some guys not sure of qualifying.

Mario Dominguez and Max Papis crashed in the morning warmup.

Phil Giebler just crashed and that's it for him.

Mutoh crashed his qualified car too.

What an awesome Bump Day.

Here's the progression of the day's events with Row 11, with all today's speeds going after yesterday's speeds.

Start of Day:

31. Roger Yasukawa - 218.0
32. Buddy Lazier - 217.9
33. Marty Roth - 215.5

A.J. Foyt IV goes out at noon and bumps Roth. Buddy Lazier on the bubble.

31. Roger Yasukawa - 218.0
32. Buddy Lazier - 217.9
33. A.J. Foyt IV - 219.1

Marty Roth goes out around 2 and bumps Lazier. Roger Yasukawa on the bubble.

31. Roger Yasukawa - 218.0
32. A.J. Foyt IV - 219.1
33. Marty Roth - 218.9

Mario Dominguez goes 217.7 trying to bump Yasukawa. Just a little too slow.

Buddy Lazier waves off his attempt as he is too slow in the low 217s to get back in the field.

Mario Dominguez, in a car he wrecked yesterday, goes out at 5:30 and bumps Yasukawa. Puts himself on the bubble.

31. A.J. Foyt IV - 219.1
32. Marty Roth - 218.9
33. Mario Dominguez - 218.6

Roger Yasukawa goes 218.5 trying to bump Dominguez. Just a bit too slow.

Max Papis tries to leave pit lane and can't go due to clutch problems.

Buddy Lazier goes 219.0 trying to bump Dominguez. This was after his crew said they took out "as much wing as we dare". Puts Marty Roth on the bubble.

31. A.J. Foyt IV - 219.1
32. Buddy Lazier - 219.0
33. Marty Roth - 218.9

Roger Yasukawa goes 218.4 trying to bump Roth. That is his final attempt.

Mario Dominguez on his first lap goes 219.2. He then spins on lap 2 and Roth stays in the field. The gun fires at 6pm and that's the day.

I am actually pissed that Roth is in the field. I mean he is going to wreck, its 100% going to happen. Yasukawa would actually be able to finish

Not true. John Andretti is 45 years old. The person he is driving for, his car owner and in the field in his own right, Marty Roth, is 49 years old.

I don't mind Roth and I applaud what the guy does. The only way I'll ever get into racing is his model. At least he's not a ride buyer and he fielded his own car, in addition to John Andretti's.

He would've finished last year if the rain came 10 minutes earlier.

Anyway, rows 7 through 10 has 8 rookies out of 12. Lap 1 crash anyone?

no he will crash. He's had to improve this year because there is actually competition for him in the back field. Thus he will probably try too hard.

But yeah being an owner driver is difficult. I'd like to be rich and drive an IndyCar, but honestly probably in vintage races on a roadcourse for fun not in the way of people. I mean the IRL can black flag him as well.

Well I'm sticking with Dixon for the season championship and for Indy. He has no desire to drive in NASCAR and he's to old for F1, so he should be in the IRL for a while to go too

My personal favorite of the top 4 drivers is Castroneves.

But if I'm picking a winner, I'll say Dan Wheldon.

well actually the head of security of the speedway stopped her. Pit road during a race is not the best place to do anything. Other pit road confrontations have been AFTER races

Vitor has got to be cursed man. But still Carpenter finishing 5th is actually the BEST drive of the race. overshadowed by other stuff (ok I've had enough of Danica thanks) but worth talking about!

A bit late, but here's my thoughts:

-Who before the race would've thought that both Dale Coyne cars would lead the race and neither Penske car ever would?

-What team will Tony Kanaan race for next year?

-Who will be in the 2nd Penske car next year?

-I really hope Sarah Fisher did not overstretch her finances.

-Dreyer & Reinbold take all 3 cars to the checkered flag and take 8th, 10th, and 19th.

-Lots of hoopla and publicity after winning a race and following in your father's footsteps at Indy equals...33rd. No worries Graham, there'll be more races.

-Top finishing female driver was Milka Duno.

-For all the talk of the Big 3 teams, three of the top six was taken by the B-teams.

-How about Vitor Meira? I thought that with the National Guard coming on as a sponsor he may lose his ride next year, but taking 2nd for Panther's best Indy finish ever is pretty good and I think his position is more solid now.

-The best of the CART crossovers was KV Racing. Both of Newman-Haas' cars crashed.

-Ed Carpenter took a solid 5th and he's now a solid 7th in points. He just needs to break through and get that high finish.

-Looking forward to Tomas Scheckter's participation in races later this season.

-All the media is supporting Danica and her "walk".

-On to Milwaukee, the points for the second championship of the Indycar season look like this:

1. Dixon 191
2. Castroneves 176
3. Wheldon 153
4. Kanaan 139
5. Andretti 130
6. Patrick 122
7. Carpenter 120
8. Power 114
9. Mutoh 113
10. Servia 112

13. Rahal 98
14. Meira 98
16. Foyt IV 92
19. Briscoe 84

I swear he has finished second at Indy before.........

yep it was 2005 but for Rahal. I think I heard a tv reporter say it was HIS best finish. But yes it is Panther's best finish. They SHOULD have won in 2001 but Hornish spun but had the fastest laps consistently. 'course he won the championship anyway.

just got back in town today. The weather was the best for a 500 in years (especially after last years race marathon). The crowd was great, much better than a nascar crowd. Seeing danica march toward briscoe was the highlight for me.

I was rooting for scheckter, he was doing great untill the pit accident. I'm probably going to go to kentucky in august as well.
