Quote : | " At about 11 a.m. Monday morning, an individual in Holladay Hall received a bomb threat to the Bell Tower via phone, according to Capt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police.
"We're trying to run down leads on the location where that phone call came from," Barnwell said.
According to David Rainer, associate vice chancellor for environmental health and public safety, the threat was very specific as to where the threat was directed to and when.
"It's not clear where it originated from yet," he said.
Campus Police closed off the area near the Bell Tower while waiting for the Raleigh Police K-9 unit to arrive and search the area. Raleigh police and the Raleigh Fire Department responded to the call.
"They didn't see anything in the area after searching the canvas," Barnwell said.
Police cleared the area around 1 p.m.
Rainer declined to discuss security procedures that police were taking because they are still investigating the incident.
Douglas Massengill, sophomore in political science education and assistant to the director of federal research affairs in Holladay Hall -- the administrative building near the Bell Tower -- said he was at work when administration from the Department of Legal Affairs informed his office of the bomb threat.
"Police asked us to stay put ... but it was up to our discretion," he said.
Although Massengill said he does not know which office the phone call went to, he said everything went smoothly after police arrived on scene.
"Things were handled pretty well," he said.
According to Barnwell, this is the second bomb threat the University has received in five years.
"It's not something that's frequent, but it does happen," he said. "We're continuing to investigate that and are not taking anything for granted."
Barnwell said Campus Police will continue looking for more information.
"We take all threats seriously in today's time," he said. "That's why we're continuing to investigate it." " |
