The one I go to sure as shit isn't making minimum wage. Has her own shop out of her house and is booked solid for weeks in advance. My 15 min cut is $15.. That's at least $50 an hour when doing easy cuts. Anyway you look at it there's no way in hell that comes out to $5 an hour.

Judging by her huge ass house and lack of husband she isn't doing bad for herself

Whether or not I tip is almost entirely dependent on how long I have to wait to get my hair cut. I know the barber can't help that, but I hate going to the barber shop.

$8 cut, $2 tip. Quick and easy buzz cut.

But 90% or more of the time I do it myself.

The funny thing is, given there's about 30 million black people in this country, we're not all alike.

I get a discounted rate for hair appointments because I go to a friend who I used to work with.

With her, I tip about the same as I would a restaurant (20%).

Costs me $11 to get cut. I give her a $20 and tell her to keep the change.

I pay $50 for a wash, cut and style. I tip $10. Since I'm growing my hair out for my wedding, I only pay this every 3 months, so it all evens out.

my haircut is only $10 most of it is with the trimmers and maybe 20% is with scissors. I always give at least $2 unless they keep my face mostly clear of hair then i'll give $5-10 for a tip.

I hate pieces of hair all on my face!

Standard $2 tip for my barber--and at his price, the tip is 5ยข more than 15%. I give $5 on special occasions such as Christmas.

it's a 'shop

would be very impressive if that occurred naturally though, just think of all the fun multi-stage fluid dynamic interactions there are in a 3 phase intersect like that!

back to the question at hand, some %.

I've never paid for a haircut.

First me mum cut it, then I did, and now my girlfriend cuts it. I pay $0, and tip 100%

$200 for a women's haircut? are you fucking kidding me?

The best style I ever had was for prom, when my mom's friend couldn't do it and I went to Fantastic Sam's for my updo.
$15 + $5 tip.

I usually pay 12-15 with a 5 buck tip, then again my hair is really short right now.

I cringe at $12 haircut prices. I don't want a frickin' wash and rinse, either, so don't try to jack up your prices with that mess.

Exactly.

My old roommate would serious not tip over $1, no matter the bill..and he bitched about that. He called it "giving his money away". He didn't understand waiters/waitresses get paid like $2 an hour to work their asses off and depend on tips for any real income

Once upon I was a Chinese delivery boy.

Six minutes at great clips yesterday. New record. She also gave me the $2 employee discount so I tipped her an extra $1.

Bullshit. This does not need to be discussed again, but many of us have worked for tips. Having done it before, we expect a level of service similar to that which we gave our own customers. It's not too much to ask or too much to expect.

I've worked for tips before while making minimum wage base. $12 for 15 minutes of work ($48/hr) is plenty generous.

why would you assume that the barber/stylist/haircutter person gets 100% of the price

it's a business for a reason

I love being a hair model. Cut, color, foils, blow dry, eyebrows... about a three hour affair, would be about 250, for free, every six weeks. All I have to do is take a couple pictures for the hair books and agree to do an ad. She tips me in shampoo. :-)

Some of you guys don't quite get it. Say your haircut costs $20 bucks. It's not like they get the whole $20 bucks. If they're LUCKY, it's a 50/50 split with the salon. Don't want to tip or pay for a haircut? Do it your fucking self. Unless they jack your head up, join civilized society and fucking tip. You're paying for a service that you can't do yourself, thus you should tip accordingly.

Where do you find less than $12 haircuts? Hell, since Man-Mur raised their price to $15, the only place you can get $12 is great clips etc. and I'm not a fan of those places.

Been going to Professional Barber Shop in CV lately--$18 cut, $4 tip.

There should definitely be a cheaper price for just getting your whole head buzzed. My haircut takes ~5 minutes for them to run the clippers over my dome and touch up the edges. And I still get charged the $15 bucks and tip a dollar or two... depending on either how attractive they are or how cool of a conversation we had.

Should only be $5 bucks.

And I do have my own clippers, but that just never turns out well.

Same here. Like I said above, 6 minutes for mine. Even if the person working there only gets $2 from the total cost of the cut that's still a good hourly rate.

I don't want to cut my hair myself. I am willing to go to somewhere and pay a fee and get my hair cut. Do you tip when you go out and get fast food?
