...
This means a LOT coming from me, considering that I pretty much worship the guy...
...this is not a good album. It may be even worse than Human Touch. I've never heard him release anything so unfocused. It's not even an album - just a collection of new songs. And mediocre songs, at that. 1/15/2009 9:24:52 PM |

I have doubt that I could build a course track to a bachelor's degree in Bruce-ism. Yes, it is perhaps borderline unhealthy.
I got engaged in the pit at last year's Greensboro concert.
SO, on this day, on Super Bowl day, post your Springsteen questions, and I will answer them.

hmm,
how prolific is Bruce?
what is his best album (widely considered, and in your opinion)?
will he be the best Super Bowl half time performer ever?

Best album is a three way tie between Nebraska, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and Born to Run.
Prolific? Well, he's recorded an album in just about every genre and is universally recognized as not only the greatest rock and roll live act ever to tour, but also a damn strong folk artist.
And yes, this will be the greatest half time show ever. 2/1/2009 11:08:14 AM |

Report from rehearsal last night (spoiler: possible setlist mainstays)
Quote : | ""What a difference a night makes" Bruce Springsteen said to the crowd after the main set was over Tuesday night at Asbury Park's Convention Hall. And how right he was. Tuesday's show was much better than Monday, it flowed better and was a great night of music from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
Show began at 8:02 p.m. 1. Badlands Nice to hear this in the opening slot, after closing most of the Magic Tour shows main sets.
2. Outlaw Pete Seems like Bruce wants to keep this toward the opening part of the show. Works well. Clarence even played a little harmnica. Bruce was getting the crowd into it with the "Can You Hear Me?" parts. Very nice.
3. My Lucky Day Someone wrote yesterday that this may be the new "Two Hearts" as far as interaction between Bruce and Steve. They shared some of the vocals on the center mic and at one point Bruce yelled "Come on Steve!" They both even came out to the center extension of the stage playing their guitars.
4. No Surrender Works better here than as the closer on Monday night. Still wouldn't mind to see this retired for awhile but crowd does like it.
5. Out in the Street Is this song ever bad live? Always funs. Bruce was yelling out "Asbury Park" during the "utt-ohhh" parts.
6. Working on a Dream I have really enjoyed this the past two nights. A nice song played in concert. It's very nice musically. Clarence did the whistling part again. Bruce tried to get the crowd to sing a long but I don't think everyone knows the lyrics.
"We're on a roll" one fan said standing next to me after the first six songs.
7. Seeds First time played since the Tunnel of Love tour in 1988. I thought Bruce might bring this back to fit along with the "struggling" theme. Back video screens were showing footage of train tracks and the inside of freight-train car. It sounded pretty good for a song they hadn't played in 20-plus years. According to Jeremy3162, Seeds was last played on April 24, 1996 on the Ghost of Tom Joad Tour at the Brixton Academy, London, England. And the last time it was played with the E Street Band was on July 12, 1988 at Waldstadion, Frankfurt, West Germany .
8. Johnny 99 (rock version) Bruce was doing a train "wooh-woooh" toward the end.
9. Ghost of Tom Joad (electric) The same version they did with Tom Morello at the Anaheim shows in April of 2008. Nice to hear anything off Nebraska done with the full band. Nils did some great guitar work toward the end.
10. Good Eye Bruce doesn't use a bullet mic but it has the bullet mic sound. He came out to the center extension and played harmonica. "Ride That Train!" Bruce yelled at the end.
11. Darlington County Crowd was into it. I can tire of this song but I thought it worked well here tonight. Bruce was having a lot fun. At one point he was singing while leaning on Steve's shoulder. He then went over to Patti and when he sang "Come on baby take a seat on my fender" Patti leaned back into his lap and all the women went crazy. Bruce then went down to the front of the stage and sat down with Nils. Same way they''ve done it on past tours.
12. Waiting on a Sunny Day Crowd liked it. They were singing along. Bruce had a girl up front singing along with him at one point. Bruce stopped Clarence from doing his sax solo but then said "Play it C!"
13. The Promised Land Bruce stood next to Clarence when he did the sax solo.
14. The Wrestler Crowd started to clap from the opening chords from the organ. One of the highlights of the past two nights. It sounds great. Just Bruce, Charlie, Max, Soozie, Garry, Roy and the two backup singers - Curtis and Cindy - on stage for this.
15. Kingdom of Days First time played live after being rehearsed a lot the past two weeks. Was on the setlist last night and not played. Glad to see Bruce play it tonight. They brought another microphone out to center stage for Patti to sing along with Bruce. My favorite song off the new album and it's excellent live.
Jay Weinberg came out to play drums on the next three songs.
16. Lonesome Day I was tiring of this song in the opening part of the show on the past two tours so it was nice to hear it toward the end of the main set. Crowd always seems to get into it. Max Weinberg came down on the side off of Patti's side of the stage to watch Jay play. Jon Landau was watching from the side too.
17. Radio Nowhere Again, different to hear later in the show. Kept the energy up and Jay was great on the drums.
18. Born to Run As the main set closer. We believe it's the first time since the Oct. 19, 1984 show in Tacoma, Wash that this was played in the main set. May be a great way to close the main set. Look what happened with "Badlands" on the last tour. House lights came up as usual.
Main set was over at 9:49 p.m.
"What a difference a day makes" Bruce said to the crowd before starting the encores. He again said how they look to find themselves during these rehearsal shows and how the shows "allow us to hear the show through your ears. "It was a great night and thank you for being our guinea pigs."
He then listed the Asbury Park-area chartieis that will benefit from the two shows and the Danny Fund which got nice applause.
19. Hard Times Bruce said this was a song from 1855 by Steven Foster.
20. Dancing in the Dark Always fun. Toward the end Bruce said "I found my good luck charm" and brought up Hannah from New York City. This was the girl who dance with Bruce a couple of times last year and she is great. It was fun watching her dance with Bruce and she did a cartwheel which the crowd loved. It was my first time seeing Bruce dance with Hannah and is was very enjoyable to see. At the end of the song Bruce and Steve were pointing to Bruce's mom who was in the audience.
21. Tenth Avenue Freezeout Is it ever bad to have this in the show?
22. Land of Hope and Dreams Yeah! It returns. Nice to have this back. It was on the setlist Monday night and not played, so it was good to see it played tonight. Sounded great and I hope Bruce keeps this in the rotation. They did the "People Get Ready" part at the end. It was played a few times with the Seeger Sessions Band but not with the E Street Band since the Shea Stadium final show on Oct. 4, 2003.
23. American Land I guess this is our closer. Video screens show images of immigrants. Played same way it was on the last tour. Bruce introduced the band at the end. "We'll be seeing you up the road" Bruce said as the show ended at 10:17 p.m.
Show timed in at 2:15, a lot shorter than Monday''s 2:40, but this was a much better show than Monday. The flow was better and the show was rolling from start to finish. I talked to some fans after the show who were upset that more "Working on a Dream" songs weren't played. Tonight we did get six songs from the new album Not played from the new album the past two nights were "Queen of the Supermarket," "Last Carnival," "What Love Can Do," "Life Itself," and "Tomorrow Never Knows." The latter three were rehearsed several times over the past two weeks. The setlist had "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)" in the 12th spot (between Darlington County and Sunny Day) and that was the only thing not played. There were no other changes from the handwritten setlist. Bruce's mother and aunts were in the crowd. Convention Hall was more crowded tonight than Monday night. The seating area was filled although the way around and the floor was more crowded. I understand a lot of people (all?) got in from the drop line. Bruce arrived at Convention Hall at 4:50 p.m. and got out of his SUV and greeted the crowd of 60 or so fans. He signed a lot of autographs and took a lot of pictures. Bruce was very good to the fans in Asbury Park the past two weeks, stopping quite a few times for autographs and pictures. " |
