Quote : | "But it's perfectly legitimate to wonder if the FBI used any of their relatively new-found powers to obtain the data they did. " |
From what I'm reading, it doesn't sound like the FBI did. Basically, the IRS was doing its due diligence, looking into unusual movements of money for politicians, found something unusual in Spitzer's numbers that suggested possible political corruption, called in the FBI to investigate, and from there, discovered that the money was going into an apparent prostitution ring. They then got the necessary, more traditional wiretaps to break that group.
An interesting article in the New York Times on how it was discovered:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/11/nyregion/11inquire.html?hp
It's kind of sad though; Even if he was an righteous, arrogant crusader, the fact that he could make Wall Street tremble in fear of his zealous judicial campaigns is quite impressive. If he had been any other politician, this probably wouldn't have been a career ender, but since he had built himself up as a paragon of judicial virtue, hunting down and crushing all criminal elements including prostitution rings, to be found using elaborate funding maneuvers to purchases services from the very groups he was trying to destroy pretty much breaks his reputation.3/11/2008 2:40:51 PM |

If the Spitz resigns, New York will have its first legally blind Governor as Lt. Gov Paterson is ready to step in.
He should save some money since he doesn't have to get the good-looking hookers.
I still think the Spitz is gonna try to pull a Clinton and stay in office. 3/11/2008 8:45:34 PM |

Good question. As NY attorney general Spitzer broke up a call-girl ring and locked up 18 people on money laundering, corruption, and prostitution charges.
But that's just mickey mouse bullshit, right skokiaan?
At the very least he should step down because of the blatant hyprocrisy he's shown.
The feds were tipped off because he tried to pay a goddamn prostitution ring more than $10,000 at one time, which will set off a red flag no matter who you are. It's not like he was targeted because he's a governor.

Let's examine the reporting of the "objective" Times, shall we? Here is the Spitzer story:
Quote : | "ALBANY — Gov. Eliot Spitzer continued to weigh whether to resign early Tuesday, a day after law enforcement officials said he was a client of a high-end prostitution ring broken up last week by federal authorities." |
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/11/nyregion/11spitzer.html?ex=1362974400&en=eedb00b451dc37f9&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss
Hell, you'd never know he was a Democrat--until the eighth paragraph! So much for the summary lead.
Now here's the Times' "reporting" of the Vitter and Foley scandals:
Pressure Grows for Republicans Over Foley Scandal
Quote : | "WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 — Speaker J. Dennis Hastert faced intensifying questions on Monday about why Republicans had not reacted more assertively to Representative Mark Foley's messages to a teenage page, as members of his party, fearing a political debacle, demanded a strong response." |
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/03/us/03foley.html?scp=4&sq=foley&st=nyt
Senator Admits Use of an Escort Service
Quote : | "WASHINGTON, July 9 (AP) — Senator David Vitter, Republican of Louisiana, apologized Monday for 'a very serious sin in my past' after his telephone number appeared among those associated with an escort service that operated here for 13 years." |
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/10/washington/10escort.html?scp=5&sq=david+vitter&st=nyt
See a difference? Yeah, the Times is screaming "REPUBLICAN SCANDAL!" in the very first paragraphs--and they even managed to squeeze it into a headline.
Don't tell me there's not a difference. In any event, no news organization is going to pass on a story this juicy and lucrative--no matter how liberal or conservative it is.
For the idiots, solicitation is just the tip of the iceberg. Spitzer may be facing a number of other serious charges:
-Wire fraud
-Violations of the Mann Act
-Misuse of public resources
They'll probably accept his resignation as punishment enough for the solicitation.3/12/2008 2:18:09 AM |

I caught the last part of a report on NPR this morning that said it was likely he was caught by programs/initiatives that he implemented himself when he was the AG of NY in 2001. When he was going after Wall St executives, he implemented much stricter controls on banking and pushed through software programs that would datamine and track transactions to sniff out embezzlement or money laundering. These same programs could have been used to track his own money trail.
They also anonymously interviewed the owner of an Escort Service in New York that was upset that he was taking business out of the state 3/12/2008 8:24:10 AM |

Quote : | " Fischetti said that as a former prosecutor himself, Spitzer would not want to plead guilty to a felony that could carry jail time, like tax evasion, money laundering or bringing a prostitute across state lines.
"The main thing I would do is not plead to a felony because if he does that his law license is toast," Fischetti said. "He can't practice law anymore."
Meanwhile, as talks drag on, numerous groups have demanded that Spitzer step down, saying that his reform mission has been compromised.
"This problem really affects Gov. Spitzer at the core rationale for his governorship," said Baruch College Professor David Birdsell. "He came in promising integrity, a faultless governorship, one that's built on the firmest morale principles."
Hirshman's clear goal is to see if she can get prosecutors to allow Spitzer to plead to a misdemeanor, something along the lines of solicitation, so he'd be able to practice law after he leaves Albany in exchange for his promise to resign. --from CBS news " |

Tehran's police chief out, exposed in brothel
Quote : | "New York's got nothing on Tehran.
The day after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's announced resignation for involvement in a prostitution ring, comes word that the police chief in Tehran -- yes, Iran -- has resigned following his arrest, naked, in the company of six nude prostitutes in a brothel, overseas wires are reporting.
'Reza Zarei stepped down from his post following the raid, reportedly ordered by Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, chief of the judicial authorities, Ynetnews reported today.
'Zarei has been in charge of enforcing the Islamic dress code on Iranian women to help with "moralizing of the city," the Israeli news agency reported. During the past six months, hundreds of young people were arrested for not honoring the Islamic code of behavior.'
'Rumors of the brothel incident had been rampant in Iran for two weeks. Last week Zarei was replaced as Tehran's police chief after four years.
'The arrest wasn't reported by any of Iran's official news agencies, Ynetnews reported. Farda News, associated with Tehran's mayor who is also a former police chief, broke the story." |

Dr. Laura weighs in...it's Silda's fault!!
Quote : | "VIEIRA: Do you think women play any role in this, Dr. Laura?
SCHLESSINGER: It's interesting. what you said about what men need -- men do need validation. When they come into the world they're born of a woman. Getting the validation from mommy is the beginning of needing it from a woman. When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like our hero, he's very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs. These days, women don't spend a lot of time thinking about how they can give their men what they need.
VIEIRA: Are you saying women should feel guilty, like they somehow drove the man to cheat?
SCHLESSINGER: You know what, the cheating was his decision to repair what's damaged, and to feed himself where he's starving. But, yes, I hold women accountable for tossing out perfectly good men by not treating them with the love and kindness and respect and attention they need. " |
