Rhetorical question.

I don't have to see Hitman to know it's shit, the same way I don't have to see Bring It On 5 to know it's shit.

Yes, actually you do.

If all of your friends don't like the taste of pomegranates, then you'll probably never try one yourself. There's nothing wrong with that... but don't go around saying pomegranates are disgusting. Until you actually try a pomegranate yourself, you can't actually know if you will like it.

Score one for first-hand experiences!

is not a good analogy at all. If the grocery store is handing out free samples of one bite of pomegranates (a movie trailer to continue along your analogy) and I don't like the taste of the sample, AND none of my friends liked them AND I didn't like the taste of fruits that had similar traits...

I sure as hell ain't gonna buy one.

And we have a bunch of other guys saying "i heard that movie sucked, so i'm not going to see it, and neither should you."

Where would you be exchanging it?

If you sell it, you can buy some HDDVD imports. Got some good stuff out of Germany/France that still have the English Language on it. Silent Hill on HDDVD is good apparently (Amazon.de)

here comes BD-Live ...

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/03/20/firmware-v220-bringing-bd-live-to-ps3/

Quote :
" Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality."

now all we need is DTS-MA decoding and we're good as gold.

I'm not sure how that works ... is that a hardware or software issue? Could the PS3 potentially decode DTS-MA with a firmware upgrade?

There are two options for the lossless codecs - either the PS3 can decode it and pass the decoded info along to the receiver OR the PS3 can just pass the raw data (to a receiver that is capable of decoding ).

They have already stated there is not enough bandwidth to pass the raw data, so decoding in the PS3 is the only option.

And yes, it's just a matter writing the software to do it. It's got plenty of power to do it.

We won't see DTS-HD MA on the PS3 until there is a stand-alone $399.99 or cheaper BD-Live player that also has DTS-HD MA decoding on board. Just like with BD Profile 1.1.

so how does BD-Live work with current BD movies? Do they have to report all those movies or are we just SOL...not that I'd ever use BD-live...never had a reason to use it for HD DVD.

The only movies that support BD-Live at this point are "War" and "Saw IV."

The next two movies will be "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and "The 6th Day."

BD-Live enabled players will play current BD movies. Current BD movies do not have any extra features that require BD-Live.

Correct. The player can either decompress the audio track from DTS-MA into Uncompressed PCM, and send that to the receiver, which is the preferred method; or the player can leave the audio track compressed as DTS-MA and send that to the receiver, which, if your receiver supports this (and I don't know of *ANY* that do), it will then decompress it into Uncompressed PCM.

Quote :
"They have already stated there is not enough bandwidth to pass the raw data, so decoding in the PS3 is the only option."

Incorrect. There is enough bandwidth over HDMI to pass either DTS-MA or uncompressed PCM. The trouble is, almost every receiver that reads the audio off HDMI (cheaper ones just do HDMI switching) will want uncompressed PCM, and this is why it's better for the player to decode the audio.

You may be thinking of the bandwidth limit over S/PDIF (Fiber), where if you're sending uncompressed PCM, there is only enough bandwidth for 2 channels. In order to get surround from your PS3 over fiber, you need to do DTS 5.1.

PS... If you're honestly concerned about DTS-MA, check this:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760714

It's mostly just Fox who releases DTS-MA releases. Sony and Disney put out uncompressed PCM tracks.

^I'm not talking about HDMI bandwidth being insufficient for DTS-MA.
HDMI 1.3 (or 1.3a?) was still not finalized when Sony spec'd the PS3. Whatever A/V chip they've got in there was designed with a draft of 1.3. It cannot handle full DTS-MA passthrough. That's why on-PS3 decoding (using the Cell) is their only option.

also, my Onkyo 605 is capable of decoding DTS-MA.

That's not because of bandwidth.

well, technically the A/V chip doesn't have the bandwidth... but it's a matter of semantics at that point. Anyway, just felt like I should explain what I meant.

"Gangs of New York Announced for Blu-ray

Walt Disney Pictures Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Martin Scorsese epic 'Gangs of New York' for Blu-ray on July 1st. No specs have been released at this time, but expect a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time, but it will most likely feature the same extras as was found on the two disc DVD release.

'Gangs of New York' is one of the most highly anticipated Blu-ray titles, mostly because it has been rumored to be coming out on Blu-ray for so long. Disney will surely give this title the star treatment it deserves, and will utilize Blu-ray's space to showcase the film in an uninterrupted form.

As soon as official specs are announced, we will be sure to report them."

I watched Appleseed Ex Machina last night. Very pretty in HD. Makes heavy use of surround sound.
