terry gilliam on his previous involvement watchmen
Quote : | "In interviews while Munchausen was being released, Gilliam was seen to wear the famous blood-stained smiley badge familiar to fans of graphic novel Watchmen.
Says Gilliam, "What happened was, Watchmen came along. Joel Silver came along and convinced me there was this 'go' project, and they had a huge budget and all that stuff, and I like Watchmen a lot; I think it's really good.
And so I got caught up in that thing, and I was actually terrified of it because it was going to be one more monstrous project.
But we went along with it; it was weird, because I was sort of propelled forward because it was subject matter I liked a lot, and I knew I could do it, I recognised that I was about the only person who could do it well, and then I didn't get the money.
So I was 'saved' from that one."
Gilliam worked with Charles McKeown on this movie, adapting the script created by Sam Hamm, but producer Joel Silver failed to raise the finance to make this picture.
"However, I was contacted by the new owner of the rights in January [1996], wanting to know if I was still interested.
I think it's going to be impossible to make as a film, unless you make it three and a half hours long, which most people aren't going to want", said Gilliam." |

The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off. Remember that feeling of watching Sin City on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching Watchmen. Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon enough." |

^^i've heard the ending is different, hopefully that's not true, it's not like i heard it from a super credible source or anything.
I could definitely see hollywood fluffing shit up and trying to make it happier and less ambiguous by not killing mr. coolest character or some bullshit, but it seems like that isn't the case from Kevin Smith's write-up.

SPOILER ALERT
http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/11/director-confir.html
Director Confirms New Watchmen Ending
Quote : | "As yet another teaser poster arrived for Watchmen, featuring the ever-perky Rorschach (right), director Zack Snyder confirmed that the new ending for the film (screened in previews for eager fans) is indeed the version headed to theaters (if 20th Century Fox's ongoing copyright lawsuit allows for the premiere).
According to Dark Horizons, the new conclusion controversy deals with Snyder removing the manufactured giant alien squid that attacks New York at the end of the original graphic novel. The resulting destruction and terror of the staged event is intended to bring the world together in the face of a would-be alien invasion.
But, Snyder's version will include a new, potentially more upbeat ending. In fact, Snyder denies the squid's existence: "The squid was not in the movie when I got the script, the squid was never in any draft that I saw. My point is only that there was this elegant solution to the squid problem that I kind of embraced."
Hollywood is expecting several rallies by protesting squid later this week." |
I'm officially on the fence about seeing this now.11/13/2008 1:29:27 AM |

Spoilers
Quote : | "According to all the spoilers that are leaking out of the Portland screening, Ozymandias no longer creates a squid and teleports it into New York City; instead, Ozymandias tricks the all-powerful Doctor Manhattan (the big blue guy in the trailers) to help him create a device that mimics Manhattan’s powers under the guise of creating clean, renewable energy for the world. Ozymandias than uses the device to blow up various cities around the world, thus framing Doctor Manhattan and achieving the same goal as the squid idea — by forcing the warring nations of the world to unite against a common enemy: Doctor Manhattan." |

I think we've all heard of the controversy about the changed ending, but I didn't see anything being confirmed until a couple of days ago. I had even heard that they were screening multiple endings and gauging reaction from each one to see how much they could get away with changing 11/13/2008 6:40:05 PM |
