But seriously, I don't know how athletic tutors do it. At some point I would have to look at the athlete and ask "You really are as dumb as dirt, aren't you?" Guess they have a sense of humor about it. 6/12/2008 11:42:00 AM |

What conference race is the most interesting?
Quote : | "Tom Dienhart I am fascinated as to how the ACC will unfold, and it's not because the league race shapes up as a battle of titans who possess national-title hopes. It's because so many of the schools appear to be painted with the same broad brush stroke of sameness.
If anyone can discern the difference between Maryland, Virginia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina and Boston College, please step forward and explain.
There is one given: Duke will stink. It's nice to know we can depend on one thing. While waiting and watching for teams to rise from the morass of mediocrity will be interesting, the most intriguing storyline involves Clemson. The cold, cruel fact that has Tiger fans tearing up: no ACC titles since 1991.
Since then, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Maryland and – deep breath – Wake Forest have won ACC titles. Order another round at the Esso Club, it'll be OK. Better days may be ahead. In fact, this looks as if it's going to be Clemson's long-awaited season in the sun. The thinking goes: If not now, when? The Tigers have issues on the offensive line and the linebackers are iffy. Still, there's a whole lot to like. A championship is a championship – even if it comes in a season when the ACC looks like the worst BCS conference. Somewhere, Danny Ford is smiling. " |
Quote : | "Mike Huguenin I think three conference races will be rather dull: the Big East, the Big Ten and the Pac-10 because I can't see anybody other than West Virginia, Ohio State and USC, respectively, winning those titles.
That leaves the ACC, the Big 12 and the SEC.
The Big 12 North race should be a good one between Kansas and Missouri – think about that for a second – but I still think Oklahoma is head and shoulders above the other teams in the South. So, the Big 12 is out because there's not enough intrigue.
The ACC looks to be a jumbled mess – and that's good. Seriously, outside of Duke and Virginia, you cannot honestly count out anybody in either division. Plus, there are intriguing sub-plots surrounding Florida State and Miami (who gets back to the top first?), Clemson (is this finally the season for Tommy Bowden?), Georgia Tech (can Paul Johnson's offense work in a "Big Six" conference?), Maryland (is Ralph Friedgen's job really in danger if the Terps are below .500 again?) and Wake Forest (can the Demon Deacons win the league for the second time in three seasons?). All that should make for a fun season.
That leaves the SEC, which – while not as jumbled as the ACC – still should have two tight division races. Plus, unlike the ACC, the SEC actually has some teams that should finish in the top 10 – and compete for the national title. Thus, the SEC is my pick." |
Quote : | "Steve Megargee When you think about how the past two seasons have turned out, there's really one obvious answer to this question. The Southeastern Conference champion has gone on to win the national title, so the SEC race certainly is the one that's going to grab my attention.
But it's not just the national title implications that make the SEC race so interesting. You have so many coaches with national championship experience (Alabama's Nick Saban, Florida's Urban Meyer, LSU's Les Miles, South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer). And you have so many juicy storylines. How will Georgia deal with its brutal road schedule? How will Florida respond to Georgia's end-zone celebration from last year? Will the LSU-Auburn game go down the wire once again? Will Alabama finally end Auburn's Iron Bowl streak?
The SEC is so compelling this season that even a game that could determine last place in the Western Division – Ole Miss vs. Arkansas – offers plenty of intrigue because it has Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt returning to Fayetteville to face his old team. No other league has so many exceptional coaches, outstanding teams and heated rivalries. " |

WSU's Xavier Hicks Jr. ticketed on way home from jail
By The Associated Press
PULLMAN — Troubled Washington State football player Xavier Hicks Jr. has been ticketed for driving with a suspended license as he was driving home from jail.
Hicks, 21, was released from the Whitman County Jail on Wednesday morning after serving a 45-day sentence and drove toward Pullman.
But he did not have a valid driver's license, so jail personnel contacted Pullman police. Police stopped Hicks when he entered town and issued a misdemeanor ticket.
Hicks had just concluded his sentence in the Colfax jail for stealing a debit card last September and for putting rubbing alcohol in his roommate's contact-lens case in January.

Ga Tech player arrested for rape and suspended
Georgia Tech football player Jerrard Tarrant admitted to police he performed oral sex on the woman he is accused of raping, a police report says, but he said the oral sex was consensual and they never had intercourse.
Tarrant and the alleged victim had met at a party the night of April 24 and went to his on-campus dorm room, where the incident occurred sometime after 1:30 a.m. Dominique Reese, one of Tarrant's teammates, told police the woman victim was happy when she left the party but was upset when she returned. Fulton County Sheriff's Office Jerrard Tarrant has been released on $40,000 bond. "[Reese] stated that it was obvious that something was wrong with the victim, but he did not know what," Tech police officer Marcus Walton wrote in his report.
Two of the woman's friends told police she was so upset when she returned to the party that she soon left again and hid behind a staircase. When they found her, they told police, she started crying and said, "He raped me."
At first, though, she didn't want to go to the police. She told one of her friends she didn't want to press charges because she was afraid if she did Tarrant would get kicked off the Tech football team, the friend said in a statement to police. Instead, the woman asked her friends to take her back to Oglethorpe University, where she and they were students. When she got there she changed her mind about pressing charges and called DeKalb County police, who brought her back to the Tech campus at about 4:30 a.m.
Tarrant, 19, of Carrollton, was arrested Friday on charges of rape and sodomy. He was released Saturday on $40,000 bond. Tech football coach Paul Johnson suspended Tarrant from the team pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. Tarrant, a redshirt freshman, emerged from spring practice as one of two top contenders for a starting cornerback job this fall.
A doctor who examined the alleged victim at Grady Hospital on April 25 found internal vaginal bruising. Two Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports showed no evidence of semen or male DNA in the rape kit or the woman's panties.
Tarrant and the woman both told police she told him to stop performing oral sex on her. He stated that he stopped. She stated that he didn't.
The woman made two statements to police, the first on the morning of the incident and the second, more detailed statement almost a month later, on May 20, after she returned from her home in Tennessee. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution does not identify victims of sexual assault.
She said she had her guard down that night.
"I drank alcohol at the party so it wasn't hard for him to get me to go to his room," she wrote in her first statement.
But once she got to Tarrant's room and he began touching her, she told him to stop because she had a boyfriend. He said that's when the oral sex ended. She said he soon started again and continued despite her continued pleas to stop.
Neither Tarrant's lawyer, Charles Lea, nor Fulton County assistant district attorney Phyllis Clerk returned phone calls to their offices Tuesday afternoon.

Quote : | "Virginia Tech May as Well Start Punting on Second Down
For as long as football has existed, it has done so as a collision sport. While advances in conditioning, rules, and protection have limited the grievous and fatal injuries, the gridiron is still absolutely no place for the weak or timid.
And yet elsewhere, an entirely different match of unbelievable athleticism plays out; while it's mainly confined to the edges of the field (and, of course, the SEC), the contest of speed on speed is every bit as integral to a football game as what happens on the line. Indeed, few things are as awe-inspiring as a wideout in full sprint, ball in hand, rendering all the violence and shoving behind him utterly meaningless.
That's why a ruptured Achilles tendon, like the one suffered by Virginia Tech wideout Brandon Dillard, is the cruelest of injuries that could befall such a player. Before Tuesday's injury, Dillard was one of the fastest players in the nation. Once the Achilles ruptured, though, his right leg was every bit as useless on land as a fish's flipper; his foot may as well have fallen off, so useless it became. He's gone, done, finito for the season, and it'd be darned good news for Dillard and the Hokies if he were even at 90% a year from now.
Of course, that's not even the worst of the news.
Severely exacerbating the severity of the injury is the fact that the Tech offense returns two shaky quarterbacks and, well, nobody else. Signal-callers Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor have combined for zero big victories, and their Orange Bowl performance was so laughable that it didn't even look like an upset by Kansas.
At running back, they dismissed senior Brandon Ore in March, then lost their next two tailbacks to serious injuries. The projected starter is a traffic cone.
They also graduated their top four wide receivers, and with Dillard gone, the top two wideouts left are Zach Luckett and converted QB Ike Whitaker; the two "veterans" have combined for five career catches. Failing that, Frank Beamer has some perfectly capable backups to call upon, namely John Daly and the dog from Air Bud 2: Golden Receiver.
Yes, the Hokies might be better off booting it away on second down. Their offense is going to be the most gruesome thing to happen on a football field since the opening scene of The Last Boy Scout." |
Quote : | "Reader Comments
1. While all of this looks grim for the Hokies, they can take some solace in the fact that they play in the ACC. They could like up crash test dummies on their offensive line and still be the second best team in their division." |

As far as betting UT vs. UCLA, I'm going with the ML underdog. That game could be 7-0, 63-56, or 49-7, and either team could get the win, haha. I don't even know how they would handicap a game like that. UT lost a bye when the UCLA game was rescheduled, IIRC 7/3/2008 2:41:12 PM |

Quote : | "Sly Croom gave the western 'Dogs a banner year in '07. With the painful memories of a 3-9 season fresh in their minds, the Bulldogs turned it around in a big way by going 7-5 (4-4 in the SEC) and then winning their bowl game against UCF, resulting in the first eight-win season since 2000.
Now, Mississippi State is ready to give back... with a giant, wayyy-oversized HD video board. (This is an artist's conception of what the completed project will look like.)
Now, don't get me wrong. Freakin' gigantic replay screens are cool (just ask Texas fans). But maybe this one is just a tad too big for this particular, ah, stadium. Check the uprights and the overall field dimension, then scan back up to look at that monster.
It's going to be blinding for whoever's on offense facing the south endzone... wait. Maybe that's the angle. HUGE HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE. Yeah, that's the ticket. " |

Well usually they show the field from the side not from behind the QB like in the Madden/NCAA. It's more Tecmo Bowl angle. But yeah it could be a huge advantage for the QB. North Carolina -- The Tar Heels still lack overall depth and seem like they're a year or two away from being a legitimate contender for the ACC title, but they're in their second season under Butch Davis and are more experienced. UNC has talented receivers in Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate, and running back Greg Little is now in the right position and should help balance the offense. There's depth at defensive tackle and eight starters return on defense. Still, quarterback T.J. Yates and his teammates have something to prove." |

^^^ I am a UNC hater (not blind, but a hater nonetheless) and I'll say that two is a fairly accurate assessment of where they'll end up by season's end. Not because they're good, but just because their side of the conference sucks balls. VT and UVA lost alot, Duke never had anything to begin with, Miami is another year away from resembling their old form, and Ga. Tech has a new coaching staff. Taking all of that into consideration, I wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina representing their side of the conference in the ACC championship. The thought pisses me off until I remember that would give someone from our side of the conference the chance to expose them on national tv. Obviously I would just assume they go 0-12 and not even sniff the conference championship, but I just don't see it happening.
