i even like the "Black" album, although you can hear that it's the beginning of the end for good Metallica.

still, I like Master Of Puppets and Ride the Lightning the best.

New single just aired on 96 Rock
The Day That Never Comes (Ironic since I have been waiting for 5 years)

Listen to it here
http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?1=1&item=601119

I think it kicks ass (Although I may be biased). The tuning is much better and reminds of justice era.

and you're unforgiveeeennn threeeeeeeee

hopefully there's some face melting stuff from beginning to end somewhere on the album

i appreciate the use of instrumentation in it...sounds like they're trying to get back to some of their root sound with the lack of singing...which is awesome

i havent liked anything metallica has done in a long long time so maybe IM biased but I think that song sucks big time. The first 4 minutes sound totally uninspired, nothing more than "hey we want this song to be one of those that starts off slow and picks up" and then they took the very first thing they wrote and dragged it out for 4 minutes. The rest of it was pretty boring too, although slightly better.

solo was alright (technically good, huge lack of emotion in the tone though - more me not liking the recording of it) but it couldnt save the song for me.

Big Meh.

decent rock song, relative to most of what else has been released over the last 10 years

unimpressive for Metallica, though.

for one thing, it's not even metal (the last 1/3 of the song is borderline, but not badass Metallica-esque metal).

why can't they get back to doing stuff along the lines of Ride the Lightning or Master Of Puppets?

While it isn't my favorite Metallica song, I do think its pretty good. Some of the lyrics are a little corny/cliche but others are awesome.

I love the first half of the song. I like the second half of the song as well, it just seems like it doesn't quite fit. Who knows, maybe with a few more listens it'll grow on me?

I had hopes when they said the "New Song" and "Other New Song" weren't actually going to be on the new album. The little snippets they had on that video weren't all that bad either. That song just confirmed my old fears.

It sounds like they took a half riff from several of their old songs and bashed them together. Sounds like they even threw in some Am I Evil into the mix.

Metallica is just catering to a new crowd these days, and I'm not in it.

^^ They are releasing a new clip everyday for 10 days. They are clips from every song on the album.

I like them going back to a longer song format but what is with mashing two songs into one to get it.

not a bad song but that one drum (snare maybe) is a little too forward in the mix for me.

If I had to describe the song in one word, it would be: SAFE

^^All the St. Anger songs were over 5 minutes, with several 7 and 8 minute songs. IMO that's one (of the many) reasons St. Anger sucked. Most of those 8 minute songs could have easily been trimmed by 3 minutes; it's like they were trying to pad the song by adding yet another verse.

I think the song is ok but it seems like they're trying to hard. The chorus sounds like a ripoff of "Fade to Black" and the end pseudo fast part sounds like a weak "One." It's not bad, but not great. At first I didn't like it but it is growing on me slowly. I'll have to wait and hear the rest of the album before I make a decision on how good the return to old school metallica sound is.

it must suck being in one of the biggest bands of all time, only to have every aspect of any new material cross examined and compared to your older work.

if they played the same ole shit

they'd be "old, tired, and played out"

...

but since they changed with the times

they're "sell-outs"

whatever, most early metallica sounds like over-distorted garbage, using 3-chord thrash metal as a way to cover up their limitations as song writers... it wasn't until One that they really started to open up.

i'm interested to hear what the rest of the album sounds like.

They have another new song you can listen to "My Apocalypse." It's much harder than The Day that Never Comes. It's not as radio friendly as the first song which is why it's not the first single I think.

Does anyone think the mixing/recording sounds really weird on these two songs?

^ I know the company that is making the album has come out and said that TDTNC single was a bad copy of the song and it won't sound like that on the album, so who knows.

what in the hell? have you ever actually listened to older Metallica?

I can KIND OF understand making that assessment of the first album, Kill 'Em All, but definitely not any of the successive albums. They did some very well written, intricate stuff well before One, although [i]...And Justice For All[i] is arguably their most musically elaborate album.

That 2nd single is a little closer to "real" Metallica than the first song. The first song isn't a bad song at all...it just isn't the (again) promised return to old skool Metallica.

This album is basically them trying to hard to sound like their early stuff, and failing miserably.

Recycled riffs, tired vocals, and song structures that make you go "wtf?"

Metallica died under that bus with Cliff.

Why even bother clicking the thread? If you haven't liked anything from Metallica since 1986 they should be as irrelevant to you as Miley Cyrus, thus your critique of an album will be taken as such.

^because the way everyone's talking, this was supposed to be metallica "back to their roots" <<god, haven't we heard that one before.

i downloaded it, gave it a fair shot...hoping for the best, and was unimpressed.

differing opinions...get over it

^I agree with your points, except that I liked Metallica up through Load and felt like the wheels started to come off with Reload and finally derailing with St. Anger.

This album is better than St. Anger, which isn't saying much. It does feel like they recycled quite a bit, especially with "The Day That Never Comes" there were moments in that song where I was expecting a different progression simply because parts were so similar to older songs. The ramp up to the solo for example was the exact same in some other song they had played in the past... The Prince? I can't remember now.

The album definitely has moments of near 80s metal. The solo around the 5 minute mark of All Nightmare Long sounds like they found the solo tab to Slayer's song Tormentor for example.

Definitely not "Complex just like Justice". The song structure is off on many songs, at least it's mixed better this time around.

All in all I'd currently have to rank it at the same level as St. Anger, simply because it hasn't had time to grow on me like a few of the St. Anger songs did and so far I haven't noticed any songs that are standouts.

No Invisible Kid moments either, which is a plus.
