My ideal way to do our banners would be individual banners listing years of 1st round appearances, 2nd round appearances, Sweet Sixteens, and Elite Eights. Then have individual banners for the 1973 undefeated season, the 1951 Final Four, all of the ACC Championships, and the 1974, and 1983 NCAA Championships. Then all of the jerseys. It would definitely clean it up a little. Also no banners for NIT appearances/championships whatsoever.

To answer my own question: The RBC Center is the 10th largest NCAA Div. 1 arena. 3 of the other arenas in the top 10 share with NHL teams.

Soon we'll be moving up to 9th b/c St. Louis will be moving out of the Scott Trade Center (aka Savvis Center) and to a new, smaller arena on campus.

The better question is how many teams that are in NHL markets share arenas with a NHL team. Off the top of my head: Villanova, Seton Hall, G'Town and St Johns. UConn and Miami did until recently. PC, Depaul, Xavier, Marquette and many others share hockey arenas with minor league clubs.

Hell our average attendance is usually around 12,000 per season so that's about on par with Reynolds....

When's someone going to complain about NFL teams sharing a stadium with baseball teams?

^That's because the November-December non-conf. games are so poorly attended and then our conference games almost fill up the place. Still should play a non-conf. game in Reynolds though.

the bobcats have one arena. i don't need to tell you that one arena is not every arena.

and bragging about our capacity is a moot point, b/c we are another 10 spots or so down on attendance. i'd much rather knock out 3k seats and fill it up regularly, as would any rational person.

again, don't list a handful of arenas (all pro except nationwide btw) and act like that's the end of the discussion. i could list so many more college basketball teams that did not share their arena w/ a hockey team.

uconn is the only public school on that list.

teams in nhl markets that do not share an arena: pitt, ga tech, vanderbilt, soon st. louis (good move), minnesota, smu, ucla, asu.

The Comcast Center and John Paul Jones Arena disagree. And both have been built since the RBC Center. JPJA does have concerts and whatnot, but no other sports teams.

I went to the game @ Virginia this year, and the first thing you notice, besides how freaking awesome that place is, is that its the home of Virginia basketball. Anytime Ive been to the RBC Center, at no point have I felt like I was at the home of NC State basketball...its more of just a place that games are played. Its a generic, boring building, inside and out, and NC State basketball is pretty much just something to do when the Hurricanes are on the road. Besides the banners and the trophy case, its all Hurricanes/RBC.

(And thats another thing: there are plenty of arenas in this country where the title sponsors logo appears in the teams colors on the floor/ice/wherever...but RBC insists to use their ugly blue logo all over the place while both teams are in red. And they have a stupid lion mascot to boot. Way to support the teams, RBC.)

the Phillips one sided box arrangement is definitely different, didnt think I would like it at first but it looks impressive from the inside. Tennessee copied it when they remodeled Thompson-Boiling this past summer.

^ I agree with that, it definitely doesnt seem like the home of a college basketball team

Have any of you seen the pics of what the Orlando Magic's new arena will look like? It's set to open in 2010.

Capacity:
18,500 (NBA)
19,000 (center stage concert)
16,000 (end stage concert)
20,000 (NCAA basketball)
17,200 (hockey/arena football)

My major beef as well.

It looks so out of place...almost like a tribute to Duke.

Its not like RBC's color scheme is so ingrained into the public's mind that if they see "RBC" in red and white they won't be able to identify it.

At least remove the blue block and just use the blue lettering on the court if you insist on keeping blue in the picture...Staples retains their red lettering on the Lakers purple and gold court, but it doesn't look so bad.

I wish some people would just stfu about how the RBC Center sucks. Do you know how many other schools would die to have a facility as nice as ours? How about you be grateful for once that our team doesn't have to play in an old ass, rinky dink building like VT, or a high school gym on steroids like BC. Could there be improvements made? Of course, but that holds true for every arena, especially ones that are nearly a decade old. Weren't we the first college arena to have the light board ring? I know we were the first in the ACC to have it. I wouldn't trade the RBC Center for any other college's arena out there, and that includes UVA's. We have an assload more suites than they do, an assload more student seats, and our student section encirlces the court. Soon we'll have HD video screens. Now if we could just find some way to convince the athletics department to just let the students stand on and entirely fill in the riser areas with removable seats rather than putting those seats down, we'd be in business. I don't see why this would be a problem, especially considering that is less work for the RBC Center staff when they have to do the basketball to ice hockey change over.

I like the idea of removing the seats from the student section. Seen other schools do this and it works fine. Tons more people in the section down there. You should be standing during the games anyways.

Plus I'm sure athletics would love this b/c then they could take away the upper deck student section and sell those seats off as season tickets.

^^^ Which arena out there is legitimately better when all things are said and done? What I mean by that is niceness of the arena (like them or not, those 75 suites and 2,000 club seats make us a ton of money each year), student section setup (FedEx Forum is thrown out the door b/c their students just sit at one end of the court), parking availability, size of concourses, sightlines, etc.

I just don't see too many arenas in college basketball that touch the RBC Center when everything is accounted for. We are very lucky to have such a building, and if you've noticed there are a bunch of schools out there that have built or are building/planning new arenas for their basketball program. Right now we aren't UNC or Duke where we can make an assload off of apparel sales. The RBC Center is the great equalizer right now for us. It's the only reason why we are tied for 13th with UCLA on Forbes' list of the most valuable college basketball teams. If UCLA had our arena, they would blow us the fuck out of the water and jump into the top 5.

I do wonder what it could have been like though had we done a renovation and expansion of Reynolds Coliseum similar to that of Ok State's Gallagher-Iba Arena.

i'm not trying to be a dick, i swear, but a huge arena that's 80% full on a good night with boxes that are owned by carolina fans is not my ideal arena.

this is not even mentioning the bad layout due to it having a hockey rink, or the hurricanes shit everywhere.

whoever was talking about going to jpj arena and getting a real feeling that that was uva's arena, as opposed to the rbc just being a place where we play was spot on.

RBC center does have the "everything's there multi-center" feel to it. Watch a Cane's game, Go see the Tran Siberian Orchestra, see the Wolfpack play bball... etc No NC State feel whatsoever. At least Reynolds had "identity". Irregardless, this was probably the lesser of two evils. Far less people will bitch about that than playing in an old high school gym.

I like Conseco Fieldhouse. It was modeled after Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse, which many of you know is a special place, especially in Indiana.

of course you could, there's only 30 of them.

and who gives a fuck if its a private or public school

i fail to see what's the problem with having a hockey rink under the basketball court. the design of the arena because they play hockey in it is far from bad. the only reason there is the huge concrete walls near the court, covered up by a NC STATE banner on one side, is FOR THE STUDENTS and the crowd behind them.

and it's not like there isn't state stuff in the arena, you haven't seen the piece of the old basketball court hung up on the wall on the.. east (i think) side of the arena? and the "Home of NC State Basketball" on one side of the arena. there's other stuff, but its not good enough though. i'm not saying its good, it could be so much better with state stuff in there. complaining about the hurricanes banners is fucking stupid because there is so many more of the state banners. the fact that they are so far back up in the rafters has nothing to do with hockey being there, that's just stupid design.

what is SO NOTICEABLE about the hurricanes being there?

what are you guys' favorite old school arenas? here's some of mine.

Hinkle Fieldhouse - Capacity: 10,757 (15,000 prior to 1989 renovation). Hinkle Fieldhouse was built in 1928. At the time it was the largest basketball arena in the United States, and it retained that distinction until the late 1950s. It is the sixth-oldest college basketball arena still in use, and was the inspiration for the design of Conseco Fieldhouse. It is most famous for the Milan Miracle in 1954, which was the inspiration for the movie Hoosiers.

Allen Fieldhouse - Capacity: 16,300. No explanation needed.

The Palestra - Capacity: 8,722. Opened in 1927. Dubbed "College Basketball's Most Historic Gym", this building is the unofficial home to Philadelphia's Big 5 (Villanova, La Salle, St. Joe's, Penn, Temple).

Municipal Auditorium - Capacity: 7,316 permanent+3,405 temporary. This arena opened in 1936 and features art deco architecture that matches much of Kansas City's old art deco skyscrapers and high rises. When the building opened it was called by the Architectural Record "one of the 10 best buildings of the world that year," and in 2000 the Princeton Architectural Press called it one of the 500 most important architectural works in the United States. Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games (83), regional finals (13) and Final Fours (9) than any other facility. The arena also hosted three of the first four Final Fours.
