weak water for the weak mind

the gist of it is, if you drink "PURIFIED" water, it's just tap water.

if im at work and i want water, i just fill up a soda bottle from the water fountain. but i keep sodas in the fridge and normally drink them all day so i can stay awake. so this isnt an issue much

at home, i like the harris teeter brand grape flavored water. its like training wheels for people who never drank water for 30 years

can't believe you guys didn't link this today. it's probably in soap box, but i don't go there

Quote :
"Plastic may be bad for health
A chemical in lightweight clear plastics mimics estrogen. But there is no consensus on the effects

Wade Rawlins, Staff Writer

One word: bisphenol-A.
The plastic additive is leaching from your water bottles, soda cans, baby bottles, microwaveable dishes -- just about anything made of certain lightweight clear plastics.

And it mimics the hormone estrogen, which some research indicates could harm human health, particularly the development of fetuses and newborn babies.

Known as BPA, bisphenol-A has been used in commercial production of lightweight plastics and epoxy resins since the 1950s. Billions of pounds are produced annually, and traces of it are found in almost everyone -- including the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies.

Though the chemical industry contends that the weight of scientific evidence on bisphenol-A doesn't support claims of harm, the chemical remains controversial. Studies flagging the compound's possible health threat to humans have made people nervous about the plastics they use every day, everywhere, to serve and store food. Some have jettisoned plastic bottles and cutlery in favor of alternatives that don't contain BPA.

"There is a cause for concern," said Gerald LeBlanc, chairman of the department of environmental and molecular toxicology at N.C. State University. "It's not something we should be sweeping under the rug."

One group of 38 scientists, including LeBlanc, published a statement last year raising concerns that the chemical was harmful to lab animals and was a potential hazard to humans. They suggested a link between recent increases in human diseases such as prostate and breast cancers and adverse effects in experimental animals exposed to low doses of BPA.

Other studies suggest the risks may be highest for pregnant women and unborn children, because early exposure to hormone-mimicking chemicals may lead to birth defects and miscarriages.

Valerie Balestrieri of Raleigh, a part-time nurse, was so concerned about the health effects of plastics that she replaced the baby bottles and sippy cups she had used with her first child before the birth of her second child last year. She also changed the plastic kitchenware she used to reheat food.

"It's such an easy process just to change your bottles," Balestrieri said. "The expense is minimal compared to potential harm. It's better to be safe than sorry."

'Might be a problem'

But not everyone is convinced there's a threat. Another independent panel of scientists convened by the National Toxicology Program, based at Research Triangle Park, was more circumspect. They expressed "some concern" -- the middle point on a five-point scale -- that exposure to bisphenol-A causes neural and behavioral changes to unborn babies, infants and children.

"We felt like there were enough studies that were done well that were raising flags that there might be a problem, that it would be prudent to investigate further," said Jane Adams, a toxicologist at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, whose research focuses on the consequences of prenatal exposure to certain medications. "We couldn't say there is no problem with this compound."

Adams said numerous studies of the chemical resulted in inconsistent findings, with some showing effects and others none. The studies used different methods, different animals, different dosages.

The National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is expected to issue the agency's preliminary evaluation of the chemical next month. The recommendation would be a guide for other regulatory agencies that could take more stringent steps, if warranted, such as requiring warning labels. "

I buy bottles of water (whatever is cheapest) just to have in my car whenever I need them (sure, they are hot in the summer, but it's better than nothing).

Any other time I just drink straight tap water.

Preferably with some kool-aid and splenda mixed into it.

there are billions of people in the world without access to clean water. People fight wars over water!

and here in the US we're lucky enough to have all the clean water we could possibly want, right here in our homes, so cheap it's practically free. And we're too good to drink it! what the fuck?

related question: if you leave water sitting out on your desk at work (in a nalgene or stainless container), is it "safe" to drink the next day? What about 2 days later?

Agreed.

I love well water, and will drink city water if needbe. But when I do buy water, I love DASANI! HATE HATE HATE DeerPark and Nestle bottled water. YUCK!! Have this HORRIBLE BITTER aftertaste. Aquafina isn't bad and neither is that cheap shit in the gas stations (think it's called SpringTime).

My roommate has a purifier, but hasn't bought filters YET.

Weird, never noticed that. I don't know if I've had Le Bleu...I think it's ok.

I usually buy the gallon at FL, but at first I thought it tasted funny. Now that I'm used to it, it's not bad.

nothing22, i talked about bisphenol-a on page one - there has been research for years that goes back and forth saying it's bad or that it's not (nalgene's website claims it's safe by quoting other studies)

Quote :

i didn't really see anything in the N&O article that wasn't already mentioned (although not linked to, i don't think)...bisphenol-A concerns are old news, it's just that the N&O is using a local source this time

personally, i do my best to avoid using plastic in regards to my food/drink as often as possible - i store my leftovers in pyrex glass dishes (though they do have an HDPE top) or in cheap corningware dishes whenever possible

and i almost never heat up up my food in plastic containers

also, the only bottles i use to drink liquid from are the original (HDPE) nalgene bottles

No rinse and out and then fill it up, bacteria will start to grow in there, even after a day.

yeah, this is probably a good rule of thumb (and although i don't always follow it, i hate the taste of stale water)...the chemicals that sterilize the tap water (mostly chlorine) evaporate within hours, and so while the water itself might have been clean, whatever you put it in (in addition to what's floating in the air) can be dirty

that said, i have and sometimes do just drink what's there if i'm thirsty, but since i usually leave water out overnight to water my plants (the chlorine can kill them), i will usually just put any leftover water into my watering can

I agree. But since it's $0.99 for a whole gallon I deal with the bitter taste.
