i knew a guy in highschool who immigrated from south africa. he put "african american" on all of his college entrance paperwork.
now, he was a smart guy and would've probably gotten in regardless, but he ended up going to Princeton. 3/26/2008 7:07:28 PM |

It's not that hard to understand. A little history on the term:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American#The_term_.22African_American.22
I mean, I see that you're really focused on your understanding of the "true sense of the category," but yours is not the true sense of the term. In fact, yours is the sense of a smartass middle-schooler who doesn't know shit about history.3/26/2008 10:08:46 PM |

One of my students at UT last week referred to hanging out with his "ethnic" friends. And after seeing me stumbling over what the hell he meant by ethnic (I've only heard this refer to people of Asian decent), he clarified and said African-American.
wha...what?
Is it wrong to say black these days? 3/26/2008 10:15:21 PM |

"Ideas and definitions of race have changed over time, depending on social and political climate."
1977 Government defines race/ethnic categories In response to civil rights legislation, the federal Office of Management and Budget issues Directive 15, creating standard government race and ethnic categories for the first time. The categories are meant to aid agencies, but they are arbitrary, inconsistent, and based on varying assumptions. For example, "Black" is defined as a "racial group" but "white" is not. "Hispanic" reflects Spanish colonization and excludes non-Spanish parts of Central and South America; while "American Indian or Alaskan Native" requires "cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition" - a condition of no other category.
so flame on for me being politically incorrect and disagreeing with the PC 'true sense of the word', but my understanding of the word is not limited to a racial classification3/27/2008 12:14:30 AM |
