call me naive, but do you guys think this level of sexism is accurate? Its insane. No doubt it existed, but i would have guessed at like.. 6/10ths the level this is showing. Its pretty over the top. I'm gonna call my grandma and ask.

This show was my favourite - last night I fell asleep half way. Sad, as they are losing viewers. With the emmys next week - will be interesting to see how many awards they actually do win.

Looking like a one hit (one season) wonder.

i think the level of sexism is fairly accurate from what i've been able to tell. people with whom i've spoken have said that there were a variety of things that used to occur openly and publicly at work that would now have you fired and/or arrested.

its an interesting change, in all honesty.

also i expected more out of last nights ep, but will continue to watch because i really don't have anything else left to do during sunday nights at 10

I'm on about ep 7 of season 1 now.. its getting a little repetitive w/ all the cheating/sex scenes. i'm ready for something interesting to happen.

They should focus more on the Ad game in the 60s, less on the cheating.

***Spoilerish***

I'm on Ep 5 of Season 2, and it's interesting that Don called Peggy to help bail him out, and she still calls him Mr. Draper, takes care of his girlfriend and bends over backwards for him. It's definitely a sign of the times.

holy crap, he knows about the baby

V That is very true, this episode has been a huge one

^it's more than a sign of the times. it's a reflection of the relationship between Don and Peggy. Don has helped her out in a big way and she deeply respects him and feels indebted to him.

I'm out - the last three were dull. Nothing (nothing) ever happens to these people. Makes General Hospital look good.

My wife and I are 4 episodes into S1 now, and I'm getting the same impression. For me, it's actually not bad. Not great, but not bad. I don't mind the slow pace (then again, i'm the kind of person who can listen to NPR and PBS for hours on end), and I find enough pleasure in "period details", i.e. all the differences between the 60s and today. However, I can't say that I'm being sucked in by the plot or characters yet.

My wife, though, is bored out of her mind. All the 1960's novelties aren't enough to keep her attention, unless something else starts happening. So, 1/3 of the way through S1 and i'm not convinced yet it's the best show of last year yet - is there more in S1 we can look forward to? Is there gonna be some drama?

I enjoy the slow pace, because it makes you pay attention to the details (which are important and well done). But this show is obviously not for everyone.

Yeah, I felt like last night's episode was slowly mounting lots of things further and further up. And the clip of next week's episode only made it seem more tense. Not that I ever expect this show to explode with multiple happenings in one episode, but the slow degradation of some and building up of others.

good ep last night as well. got to learn a little bit more about Don and they highlighted some of the issues with Betty that were described in season one. Her child-like ways of acting out and handling situations. (e.g. the phone call with her friend and locking her daughter in the closet).

I also liked the baptism thing they did at the end.

I'm excited but also really sad that the season finale is Sunday.

Good for Peggy, this last episode. But the scene with Joan was a shocker for me. Definitely wasn't expecting her fiance to be that creepy and domineering.

The key here is paying attention. This shows is singularly unlike EVERY other series on television. The most important details are almost never blaring or thrown in your face. It's an extremely involving, intelligent show.

If you watch this show while having a laptop on the couch, or folding laundry, or having any other distraction, it's going to be boring as hell, because you won't get it. Almost everything FUNNY, INTERESTING and RELEVANT to the plot is never uttered in an actual line of dialog. Which I LOVE, because it's absolutely real to how all of this seedy stuff worked back then, and how much of life still works today. It's in reading between the lines.

Uhh...what? This season got almost double the ratings as it did last season. Ratings wise, it's never been better.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/28/mad-men-ratings-season-fi_n_138448.html

But yes, the show's been picked up for Season three. but Just today they announced they might have to continue the show without its creator Matthew Weiner, which would be horrible news, IMO.

Aha, I was waiting for someone else to post about the finale first before I did. I'm more and more interested in the future of Peggy, and Pete (as separate people but we'll see what else happens), and of course Don and Betty.

And I really thing Sal should come out sometime in the future. I just think that'd be fun to watch...

I'd be VERY pissed if Weiner was taken off the show. F.T.L.

Did anyone see Saturday Night Live last weekend? John Hamm hosted, and I think slowly but surely, NBC has been putting up more clips of the show. I missed it, but I've seen a few of the skits- he played the ghost of JFK on the Obama Variety Show, they did a "Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women" that was pretty funny, and I've seen a few others. Elisabeth Moss and John Slattery made guest appearances in a Mad Men spoof.

Some of the skits

I just started watching the first season a week ago.

Peggy suddenly started wearing a fat suit and I don't care for that.

Good news!

"After months of negotiations with AMC, Matthew Weiner, the show's creator, has finalized a two-year seven-figure deal, which will ensure Weiner will be back for the show's upcoming third season.

One of the suits said, "It's been a long road to try to make this deal, but between the support of AMC and the creative deal-making of (Lionsgate TV COO) Sandra Stern, we found a way to cobble together a package that was attractive to Matthew and made sense for us." "
