yea his list made me remember Explosions and GYBE! Both of which are worthy of consideration. Honestly that list was pretty solid overall. Not all of it is music I can personally get into but talented bands nonetheless.

with arcade fire, the first album is enjoyable, but I just couldnt get into neon bible at all for some reason. i had a hard time including them personally because of that but i know im in the minority.

Go back and listen to Neon Bible again, while its not as great as Funeral (nothing really has been since that album came out) its still a great record, and reflecting upon it after some time has shown me that it appreciates over time

yeah, i feel like neon bible was really unfairly slammed. it's pretty solid, maybe a little too long towards the end (i would've cut No Cars Go).

also, big ups for Okkervil River. Will Sheff can have my babies any day of the week

No Cars Go is a very liked song live

Neon Bible really had it bad. Following Funeral is an impossible task... Funeral was in essence a perfect record

I'm becoming more convinced The Arcade Fire is the best band
(and for everyone saying you havent heard of these bands, everyone knows the arcade fire, i think they've even been on rolling stone haven't they?)

Don't think they count, as their first cassette tape was released in 94', don't know how technical we are getting.

Well I used released loosely as I doubt anyone we know has ever seen a copy IRL.

Arcade Fire, The National, The Strokes, and the White Stripes all have to be considered.

i know we spread the love on btbam and beloved, but they were legitimately great local bands.

and in saying that im adding beloved to my list, that album got ridiculous playtime in my car.

point noted

the only thing that makes me hesitate my opinion on the band is I haven't listened to their album of covers

hearing that would let me know if they suck because they can't make good original songs or if they just suck

^^ i disagree. name 5 other metal bands who are currently putting out more artisic/musical albums than BTBAM. Ill give you two to consider, dream theater(if you even consider them metal, they are kind of boring anyways) and Opeth.

^meh their cover album is very well done well but its boring. their worst album just because im not a huge fan of cover albums and their original material is so unique.

tommy sings quite a bit and has a good voice, but even the screaming vocals if you are not a fan should not erase acknowledging the high level of musicality in their albums.

technically they are as good and probably better than any artists anyone in here has listed. But MUSICALLY, which is definitely more important, (im separating the two aspects since not everyone here favors technicality as much as i do and that is completely fine as that is not the most important thing) their arrangements are extremely creative and original/unique. Key and time changes are well designed by people with an obviously very high level of understanding of music composition (undeniable here even if you dont enjoy their music). When I think of uniqueness and creativity in original material they are probably one of the top 10 bands of the last 10 years. (Behind radiohead and a few other bands).

It doesnt mean that you have to like them, it doesnt mean in any way that any of you have to list them in here. But it does annoy me when people basically say "oh they suck[musically], they growl and are loud" because they probably listened to a few songs when the majority of their material is VERY well written music.

although Gibbard released You Can Play These Songs With Chords in '97, I think that Deathcab should be eligible for consideration.

I disagree. Room On Fire is such a step up from Is This It, and First Impression's second half and most of the first (I'm not a big fan of their renditions of metal favorites) is like finally getting that blowjob from the hottest girl in school.

^^I think Is This It was an A, RoF was a B, and First Impressions was like a C+

Juicebox was probably their weakest single to date, and part of the album was fun because Albert finally said fuck this and basically did what he wanted (he's attested to as much in subsequent interviews). That's why its gutsier, which is what I think you were trying to say appealed to you.

I love the Strokes, but artistically, I don't think you can compare them to The Arcade Fire or Jack White.

Also there are rumors that the strokes are all but done as a band.

As for how Technicality plays in this decision, I'm not certain how much it should account for in deciding who is the best. Sure, a band needs to be better than proficient but if technicality mattered that much yngwie malmsteen would be greater than the beatles.

Dude fuck 5 other bands, there's no chance in hell the best band of the past ten years is a heavy metal band.

As for the repeated calls for whether Death Cab should be eligible, sure why not, but they aren't close to being the best band of the past 10 years, I'd say the Strokes trump them.

Neon Bible is very good. It's just a bit different.

But yes, The Strokes also deserve to be listed. As do the Stripes

Totally, Is This It is one of my all-time favorites, Room on Fire was fun but not nearly as solid, and First Impressions of Earth was one of the worst and most disappointing albums I've ever heard.

I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one who was a bit let down by Neon Bible. Funerals was probably the best debut album of the ten years but Neon Bible got really boring after the first five tracks.

The White Stripes are the only band that has been consistently awesome over the past ten years.

I'd also nominate Spoon if it weren't for the original release of Telephono coming in 97.

No way would I put DCFC on the list. They've really fallen off after signing to Atlantic (OMG SELLOUTS!)

i never said they were the best, i said one of the top 10. and youre right the majority of metal bands are never unique enough to be considered. but they are far from 'heavy metal'. and yngwie, while talented, is boring and uncreative. hes fast. thats it. nowhere close to the best in anything except maybe a speed competition. the beatles are worlds better and more enjoyable than him.

but there are a few bands that are the exception not the rule and its a shame that they get passed over as just a 'heavy metal' band. but ignoring the broad generalizations, why could a metal band never be the best band? I am kind of curious. And for the record, despite what I enjoy to play and write, metal makes up a small percentage of what I listen to 10% if I had to guess.

i think his point is that yngwie fucking malmsteen is great at what he does... he seems to run the same scales and shit over and over again, while BTBAM has crazy arrangements and time signatures. but I cant be the best judge as I have not listened to a shit ton of yngwie malmsteen, I have seen him live a time or two. Very impressive but once again, not really that creative.

if we're going back 10 years, and some people have thrown in some 1997 stuff, could we not throw in some bright eyes or cursive? i mean that was like the beginning of the end of the good saddle creek days right?

I'll get you into all of their albums.

And Bright Eyes released a grand total of two tracks in '97. I think Conor, et al. are game for this thread.
