Question about hockey was asked to Charles Barkley.

Barkley: "I don't care about hockey, I'm a brother."

And as far as the Capitals being a big deal in Washington, I defer to Washington Post writer Michael Wilbon, a person who is friendly to sports like hockey and soccer that aren't liked by the majority, has still stated in the past that Ovechkin can walk down a street in D.C. and wouldn't get recognized.

Look, it's great for the number of fans that care, just like our Stanley Cup win a few years ago was great for the 18k in the RBC Center and the rest of the Hurricanes fans that were watching us beat Edmonton on TV, but don't treat it like it's stopping traffic or Congress is going to close for a few days for it, allright? They're not the Redskins. There still is the bandwagon effect that Vulcan referred to. That'll get a few to watch that only care about the playoffs.

oh, yeah, Charles Barkley, I forgot that he was the national spokesman for all black people

And half of what Wilbon says is worthless, Ovechkin would not only get recongnized walking the streets of DC, he'd have trouble making it more than a block. Maybe not in southeast, but pretty much anywhere else. The motherfucker's face is everywhere.

^ If you'd like, go start a thread in the Lounge asking only black students on their opinion on the sport. It's about as scientific as we could get. I'm guessing 10% at best?

I'd get more satisfaction going to that women's empowerment seminar at the RBC than going to a hockey game.

^^What would that prove? That black people don't like hockey? Okay, that may be true, I don't really care whether it is or not. DC cares about the Caps, you're the one who is making it all about race. I think you just don't know shit about DC

^^^Eh, that's pretty much the way it is in every American city, with the exception of certain players in Minnesota, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and maybe Philly or New York.

It takes time to build a base and to become recognizable. Ovechkin certainly seems to be becoming a name up there. People love winners, and they love enthusiasm like he shows. I've never seen Wilbon as "sympathetic" to hockey at all. Granted I don't know him from anything but ESPN, but he doesn't seem to give a shit about it.

There are obvious cultural, social, and economic reasons why hockey isn't exactly in the front of the minds of the average black guy in America, but then again, it isn't in the front of the mind of the common person in American period. There is no reason for them to be inherently opposed to the sport. Hockey in America has to recruit and win most fans no matter what their race is, because most of them are not born or raised as hockey fans. If a team has a big run in a city with a large black population, like D.C., then I still think the interest will be generated. A black Redskins and Wizards fan in D.C. is no different than a white redneck UNC fan in the Triangle. It worked out pretty well here.

BTW sweet gallery Scrumples

the 2000 census is bullshit, since then they gentrified tons of areas and kicked tons of black people out. DC is is like half crackerville now

You apparently missed the bit just over a month ago where Ovechkin rode a Segway all around downtown while wearing his jersey and still only got recognized a handful of times.

^^ So are you arguing the number should be lower or higher?

Look, I'm not arguing there aren't Caps fans, of course they are, they fill the arena. I'm just saying if you compared the percentage of the people in the D.C. area that is in the fanbase and cares and is watching the Caps play outside the arena on TV compared to the rest of the league, it'd probably be up top, because most of the city's residents wouldn't watch even if they were in the Stanley Cup Finals. Look at the Canes, yes I cheered when they won the Stanley Cup, but most of my co-workers were still "It's hockey. I don't give a s***."

This makes for a good survey idea. Vulcan, I know you're on HFBoards. Has a study ever been done that determines franchises' fanbase sizes for the NHL? I know an NFL one was done a year ago.

It's lower now

Either way, I think Wilbon is an idiot. Ovechkin can't just fucking walk around DC without getting recognized, especially not anywhere in NW, or even most NE

Yeah, I was going to bring up the Segway thing myself, but that was before the team had success, and winning does wonders, so I can buy the increased popularity.

I actually tried to find something like this a while back. To my knowledge no such study exists.

Speaking of Wilbon, they are actually spending a full 5 minutes right now on PTI previewing the playoffs. Trevor Linden getting in a dig about people not watching.

You actually mean just about four months ago way before the Capitals were even remotely involved in a playoff race.

And "OH NO, the guy wandering around looking for tour information doesn't recognize Ovechkin" -- what a stunning indictment of the popularity of Ovechkin amongst the DC natives.
