i think there's a form called 1040-A or some crap for people who don't normally file, but are still eligible. but yeah you have to file something or another

So, I asked that somewhat jokingly and somewhat seriously....I filed last year, because i made money in 2006, but i didnt have any income last year so i didnt have anything to file. I was informed by someone that the rebates were based off of the tax returns from 2007 (ie the taxes you filed last year), so i didnt think it was necessary to file anything this year if i had no income

i do responsible things with MORE than enough money every month

i feel no obligation whatsoever to be even remotely responsible with any that's leftover, and the stimulus check is no exception. i don't know what i will spend it on, yet, though.

in all seriousness, if you find yourself putting this little 600 dollars towards bills, then you really need to sit back and re-evaluate the way you spend your money...

not if you're maxing it out

and if you're not maxing it, you could just add it to your normal contributions

of course, if you're doing 300/month as a grad student, that's prob ok. Might as well live a little.

I already spent it on a mountain bike. Now I ride to work at least 3 times a week, and thus not paying for gas. I'm pretty sure the economy is going to get a net loss on that investment

Where are you buying a kilt? You can get a good quality one between $400 and $600.

try J. Higgins: http://www.jhiggins.net/
or Everything Scottish in Linville: http://www.everythingscottish.com/

This way, you're only paying for the wool with a depreciated dollar, and not the labor. The prices are about the same. You can order online with Higgins, but you can go get measured by Harvey in Linville if you care to drive up there. Be careful though, he tends to lean towards the "its harder for a kilt to be too long that to be too short" school and will aim for about 1/2" to 1" above the knee. Personally, I like mine with it touches the top of the knee cap.

If you're remotely serious about wearing Scottish attire for any reason other than just to own a kilt (which is perfectly fine) then check out:

each clan having its own tartan didn't start until the 1800's. so it's history, but not middle ages or anything

Id rather know I'm getting a hand woven kilt from Scotland than a company that buys tartans and makes them into kilts. I also might just wait til the Highland Games to get it.

Troo. The whole concept of a clan having a tartan of its own grows out of the reality that most people from a given area would have similar coloring due to one weaver having a particular style and particular wool dyes but it wasn't codified until much later. Kinda silly really. Not that it stops me from wearing one.

The wool is going to be the same, it is just sewn up here in the states than in Scotland. If that is worth $200 to you, more power to you.

Be sure to look at the "ancient" vs. "modern" colors too. There isn't any difference in the pattern, and there is no real basis for calling them "ancient" or "modern", the "ancient" simply isn't as dark so for families like mine, the Campbells, it shows up much better than the "modern" which is so dark as to be nearly indistinguishable:

"Ancient":

vs

"Modern":
