So, what, just because we don't like a government, we should not allow them to participate in/host the Olympics? The Olympics are about putting all that political nonsense aside and competing for the sake of competing. It's also about monetary support of countries; there is a significant boom in the host country's economy that comes from hosting. If we start excluding countries for made-up political reasons, eventually there aren't going to be any Olympics any more. Because, let's face it, this is a made-up political reason, as every major civilization in history has butchered some people to get to where they needed to go. 4/8/2008 7:58:14 PM |

have you ever been in beijing? if you have, then you'd know that it's so crowded there that you can't even build a teepee there without having to tear some place down.
and forcing people out of their homes because the government wants to build something happens all the time in the US too, you moron. people get paid for their properties in both countries.4/8/2008 8:57:01 PM |

wrong, you should have watched the abc news report. They literally just kick them out in the street over in beijing. None of the displaced have been given a penny for their property. 80 year old women who lived in a house their entire life were dragged out of their home right before it was bulldozed and told to have a good day.

^ Free, huh? Well, just tell that to Pelosi and these two guys:
Pelosi Statement on the Sentencing of Chinese Human Rights Activist Hu Jia
Quote : | "Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the conviction and sentencing of human rights activist Hu Jia by the Chinese government. Hu has been an outspoken critic of the human rights record of the Chinese government and called on the international community to hold Beijing responsible for the promises it made when bidding to host the Olympic games. This week, Hu was sentenced to three and half years in prison for 'incitement to subvert state power.'
'The conviction and harsh sentencing of Chinese human rights activist Hu Jia should dispel any notion that Beijing would permit strong criticism of government policies by the Chinese people preceding the Olympic Games.
'There is disturbing new evidence that the imprisonment of Hu Jia is part of a broader pre-Olympic crackdown on peaceful activists including journalists, lawyers, and human rights defenders. Amnesty International released a new report this week providing evidence that the Chinese government is intensifying its crackdown on human rights activists because of the Beijing Olympics.
'The Olympic Games in Beijing should provide an opportunity for more free expression, not less. The international community must speak out to press the Chinese government to live up to its promises to improve human rights before the Olympic games.
'Hu Jia is risking his life, family and freedom so he can speak the truth. I call on the Chinese government to immediately and unconditionally release Hu Jia from prison and to respect the fundamental freedoms of all the people in China.'" |

nah, chinese people aren't free.. in my opinion. it's not about doing what you want or saying what you want (after all what you do or say must not disturb other people, for example sexual harrassment), but KNOWING and THINKING however you want. That's how I value freedom. In china, the schools try really hard to preach you untrue or biased point of views in hope to make you obediant. I don't like that, that's like treating us like retards. I think American schools are doing better on this (at least according to my experience) and I tell the chinese people about it too, and of course I got flamed, lol. I get flamed everywhere anyways

Err... isn't this why all these activists are so pissed off to begin with? Sure, technically China has controlled Tibet right now, but at very least, they're like any other ethnic minority group that's been shoved around by their neighbors. The relocation of Han Chinese to water down the distinct Tibetan culture is no different from what's been done in the past by the other so called European imperialists that you're railing against.
You should also keep in mind that China didn't get to its current size without doing the very thing you're complaining about (they have 120 million ethnic minorities afterall); the Chinese have simply had enough years go by that no one really cares anymore about all those Mongolians, Uighurs, Tibetans, Koreans, Manchus, and other ethnic communities that got the snot kicked out of them by the Chinese imperialism.

I hate the people who jump on the anti-Chinese bandwagon simply for the issue of Tibet.
Most of my peers have a very skewed understanding of the situation. They have no knowledge of the historical backgrounds and the current situation in Tibet. Yet, they jump on the bandwagon and claim they are absolutely right after reading 2 pages of Free Tibet flyer.
The real issue is that yes, the Chinese have committed a number of human rights violations in the past, this includes the suppression of Falun Gong, crackdown on Tiannanmen Square and etc.
However, out of that, the Chinese have enjoyed rapid material progress and I do believe that changes in China will come in time. However, the western media needs to take a hard look at itself and stop polarizing China as the root of all oppressions. 4/9/2008 5:57:14 PM |

The ceremony had been slated to take place Wednesday at Justin Herman Plaza, where thousands had gathered to support and protest the Beijing-bound flame's visit to the city.
Just before the relay began, the torch was rerouted about a mile away from the demonstrators and spectators. Officials say they changed the path because of security concerns.
