Yeah we shut down Alex Ovechkin the game before and made Oduya look like Bobby Orr in the next...

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Sergei Samsonov (SAM-sawn-nahf) on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Samsonov $2.3 million in 2008-09, $2.5 million in 2009-10 and $2.8 million in 2010-11.

w00t. More money than I hoped or expected, and 3 years is a pretty big risk. Hopefully we get a top level Samsonov for those 3 years. I'll be getting a jersey now. D:

Brings us up to $37.6 million in salary tied up for next season. IMO this seals the deal on Erik Cole being traded.

That's a bit more than I thought he'd get based on his Chicago/MTL days. But if her performs like he did for us, it's not too bad.

Cole's not going to go anywhere. Everyone's afraid to pay him as much.

Conboy got suspended 8 games for leaving the bench to join in on that fight.

Worth it.

I don't think Conboy left the bench, he just never got off when he went for a change.

I love the commentator calling Conboy a bitch and then saying that Grant is "showing restraint"...the guy he's got ahold of is fresh and is wearing a visor.

That was my favorite. Conboy needs to go ahead and suit up for the Canes next season. Maybe with him on the bench/ice there won't be as many injuries???

from the n&o:

The Canes captain, who had reconstructive surgery Feb. 15 for ligament damage in his knee, joined several teammates who were working out at the RecZone today in preparation for next month's International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championship.

Eric Staal, Ray Whitney and Cam Ward all skated, and the trio will represent Canada in the championship. Dennis Seidenberg (Germany) also worked out.

“It’s tough to take your mind off [the season],” Ward said. “The only reason we got this phone call is because we’re not in the playoffs playing right now. You definitely don’t want to get used to getting that call from Team Canada because that means you’re not playing in the playoffs. But it is a good chance to turn your season into a positive, by leaving on a good note like we did last year.”

The Canes' Tim Gleason (United States), Tuomo Ruutu (Finland) and Niclas Wallin (Sweden) are also slated to play in the championship but weren't at the skate.

Carolina is still waiting on news of coach Peter Laviolette's job status.

“I’m not sure what’s going on, as far as that goes for me,” Staal said. “I’ve had great experiences with our coaching staff. I thought they’ve worked very hard and are hard working people. I’m not sure what the plans are with management, but I’m here to play hockey and whomever is behind the bench, I’m going to play hard for.”

Said Ward: “I think that’s none of my business. All I know is that I really like coach Laviolette. I think he did an excellent job. I think the guys definitely want to play for him. He’s a top-notch coach.”

It's so stupid. One more win and people would be talking about Lavi for the Jack Adams. Now they're talking about his job on the line? Nuts I say.

we're not that far removed from a stanley cup...

the organization definately seems to structure contracts so that we've got a big shot at the title every few years, and I have no problems with that.

I don't understand this, but hooray us I guess. I have no idea why Carolina is #1 among all teams in the title column despite only having one and missing the playoffs last season.

^^^ I'd probably guess that it's because we have 2 conference titles and 1 Stanley Cup title in the 10 years of existence for the team. That's a hell of a percentage that no one else can match. No other team has won their conference title 20% of the time and the national title 10% of the time.
