no I'm not a communist. I'm just a person who was born and raised in China for 16 years before I migrated to the US. no matter what the chinese governemnt does or how I dislike chinese culture (in terms of social norms etc.), I don't think I can ever abandon the root, because this is how everyone considers me as. I have gone through a lot of struggles in the past 7 years.

Part of your "identity" seems to be backing inhumane actions of your Communist homeland. Not all Chinese are communist, I respect not only those unwilling to accept that godless form of government, but revere the ones that speak out against it.
You should be ASHAMED of yourself, to use your newfound freedoms to speak AGAINST the very government that granted you such liberty. Your countrymen have no such luxury. 4/11/2008 1:48:59 PM |

The earlier talk of Robin Hood reminds me of an experience in a political science class long ago.
To demonstrate the importance relative power, the teacher asked which of the following we'd prefer: 1% GDP growth for the USA, 1% for China or 5% for us, 5% for China.
Needless to say, most raised their hands for 5% growth.
Then we were to choose between 5% growth for us and 20% for China or 1% for each country.
Most chose the later. There was an East Asian guy sitting in the back of the room. He looked around in shock or disgust. "Y'all are evil," he said.
He was right. 4/11/2008 2:08:31 PM |

well, I wouldn't prefer 20% growth for china either. cuz I know what it's like over there, the wealth is highly concentrated and the general people aren't getting enough money proportion to the economic growth. when chinese governemnt has money, they are more likely going to build fansy office buildings, banks etc. than facilities 4/11/2008 2:15:44 PM |

People still need food, shelter, and health care.
Opposing economic growth in China because of relative power or ideological reasons is downright mean-spirited.
We're talking about the wellbeing of millions and millions of people.

That's true, but don't see how less economic growth would be better. Getting a tiny fraction of 20% is better than a tiny fraction of 1%.

what's preventing the chinese people from getting a better lifestyle is the chinese culture itself. - or should I say, the BS part of chinese culture. it's on its way to change, I think. most significant bs in chinese culture is "reputation". chinese people value their reputation too high. the government officials will try to build those things to make their city look good and thus give themselves good rep, and scientists etc. spend most of their time not on working but rising in rank.

As I understand it, standards of living have been improved in China over the last few decades. Economic growth generally correlates with this increase.
(This is not to say the growth has come without cost. I've heard the environmental damage is great.) 4/11/2008 2:32:52 PM |

Well, industrialization tends to cause such environmental damage. I don't like it either, but that's how the market seems to roll.
I suggest technocracy. Until then, though, people will do what they can to improve their lives. 4/11/2008 2:38:13 PM |

the lebenstandard has increased over the decades, yes, but it's coming to a halt. recently food price has experienced significant increase over a short period. I don't think it's a good sign. but the central officials are becoming more and more open minded, which is good. corruption has always been big issue for centuries. 4/11/2008 2:39:19 PM |

environmental destruction is not a causal effect of industrialization, China is just careless and arrogant in its approach towards the environment

as far as environment goes, they don't have money for it. if you are studying environmental engineering, you'll know how much it'll cost to maintain a clean production. in china, it's usually the small production plants who are damaging the environment the most. they are too small to afford water/air treatment, and the local governemnt can't afford to close them up - many local inhabitants live on those production plants. 4/11/2008 2:48:00 PM |
