^All of the last three bands pictured look more homosexual than any of the bands that you singled out.

As a State fan, you have to love Spoon considering their drummer (Eno) went here for electrical engineering.

^^^ I don't think so--and don't forget that the '80s arena style worked in its time. Do you honestly think that twenty years down the road some smartass isn't going to be looking at the bands like Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Wilco, et al and saying those guys look like douche bags? But that's just the look.

Good music--great music--stands the test of time. The music of, say, Van Halen and KISS ( since they've been mentioned here) has survived and is still widely popular and commercially successful today--after more than thirty years!

Fast forward twenty to thirty years. Do you think anyone will still be playing Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Wilco, and so on? Will anybody even remember that they existed? Time will tell.

^ I wish all my fellow alumni of goodwill well in their endeavors. He is certainly no exception.

Using hooksaw's formula for musical greatness (a well-kempt appearance + tremendous record sales), the Backstreet Boys are the gold standard by which all acts should be judged.

Not a Kiss fan...but I still like Van Halen, G'nR, AC/DC, CCR, etc.

I will still probably be playing Spoon 15 years from now too. My tastes have changed. But I don't dislike any of the stuff that I use to like. So no reason to think I'll start disliking Spoon at any point.

^^ So how a band looks doesn't matter? Prove it.

^ Understood. But do you think you're representative of the wider audience? Do you think they will be listening to Spoon and others in twenty or thirty years like people listen to KISS, Van Halen, and so on now?

BTW, it's just a question. There've been plenty of one-hit wonders and flashes in the pan that I still think are great (or at least good) and still listen to.

In fact, I'll share one with you--Masters of Reality:

Probably not. Kiss, Van Halen, and so on...were a lot more mainstream. So I'm sure there are more of those fans now...then there will be Spoon fans later. But I don't think Spoon is going to lose any of their fans.

Spoon has 4 albums by my count. Two great ones, one very good one, and one good one. A little more than a one-hit wonder.

^ Latter point: Yes, I understand. I meant that longevity--though important--is not the only standard by which to measure a band.

Can we turn this thread into posting pictures of stupid-looking bands that are actually fantastic?

Mustache brigade!

Slackers! I bet they smash their instruments.

As long as we're playing that game, I'm pretty sure they have six full-lengths.

im pretty sure if you asked most KISS fans in the early 1980s who Minor Threat was they wouldnt know, and certainly would have probably bet money no one would be talking about them in 2008. However, they are still listed as an influence by the majority of punk and hardcore bands today, and pretty much accidentally started the whole straightedge lifestyle which is still prevalent today (maybe more now than ever).

youre right in that good music will stand the test of time. But I dont necessarily think 'standing the test of time' requires you to be largely commercially popular now or 30 years from now.

same goes for bands like Madball, Integrity, Shai Hulud etc. Their influences will be around in the hardcore scene for years to come. And this can be said about all sorts of genres.

And youre right about longevity not meaning much because there are bands who have been more influential in one or two albums than other groups with 5+ albums out.

not speaking to you specifically hooksaw since you are at least somewhat educated on rock/music history, but my point is that measure of 'standing the test of time' is skewed for people are only going to consider bands like KISS or Van Halen to be the ones who have lasted. Sure, having your songs still played in arenas and commercials is one way to measure that, but generally, the great bands who might have been somewhat non-mainstream (for lack of a better word) are going to continue to live on most likely in the form of influencing more non-mainstream bands and will be significant and stand the test of time to the bands they influence.

In fact in today's music business, it is the bands who ARENT topping the charts for their 15 minutes of fame and disappearing, but quietly selling out clubs all over the world everynight who are creating the lasting music imo.

KISS is an awful band that does/did a terrific live show.

The biggest KISS fan I know (and this fucker has rooms and rooms of merch) readily admits that KISS isn't a very good band.

Your point is well taken-- I was merely listing well-known bands in a genre that had already been brought up in this thread. And your knowledge of the shifting paradigm in the music industry is appreciated and noted.

And here's one example of the kind of change that's happening in the music business today (and see Jay-Z and Live Nation's deal):

Kaiser Chiefs' MAMA predicts a live music riot

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/02/20/bcnmama120.xml

But getting back to my point, I think the following song and band fit: "Living Room Scene" by Dillon Fence. Here's a band that made good, intelligent, rocking music, music that had indie cred, if you will, and was popular and influential:

http://new.music.yahoo.com/singleVideo/?vid=2141162

And I don't think they look too dorky either.

My least favorite is probably the 2nd track on ga ga ga ga ga, can't remember the name. something about a ghost. I just can't get into it at all, they played it last night.

not that it really matters, but that song is sorta the title track (they called it "ga ga ga ga ga" before they had lyrics because of the little discordant keyboard thing that goes through it)
