This is why I don't want to be a parent. I had a stable upbringing and good values around me. But I went nuts. Other friends of mine from high school with the same background didnt. I wouldnt know what to do with my own child. On one hand you want to protect them, but on the other, kids try their damndest to rebel against anything you try to tell them.

Also punchmonk that post is bittersweet because it makes my dormant idealism and hopeless romanticism bubble to the surface

srsly though its dormant because I'm a coward and hate putting myself out there after I had my heart broken. I went the weak route and became cynical instead of just trying to learn from the experience and looking forward. The fact that I recognize this does little to change my behavior for the better, rather, I fear the cynicism fuels some of my regretful decisions

My mom made driver contracts for my younger brother and sister when they first got their permits.

I never had a "college contract" like this, but the PC part might've been good for me, since I deleted a TON of stuff (some of it important) off my 4GB computer to make room for Counter Strike

V Oh it was definitely worth deleting a bunch of .dll files. I barely managed to squeeze that game onto my computer.

i don't know, if you're in college and going on some major trip, i understand calling your parents and letting them know. if you're going to a Durham Bulls game, or even down to the beach for a day, i think it's silly to have to call for permission.

When I was in high school, taking the city bus home was intoxicating because if I so desired, I could stop at the library on the way home! Or Starbucks, or my work to spend my $rhodeisland on fabric, and I didn't have to rely on my folks.

Coming to college was completely overwhelming for the first couple of weeks: "You mean I have to get myself to classes on time? WTF this isn't fair"

If I had matured any sooner than I did, socially, I'd have been in a world of academic, and maybe judicial, hurt.

I used to be.
Then I realized I've got more common sense and a better grasp of how harsh the world can be than a good many parents now, and I realize that even if I fall short of my own expectations as a parent, I'll still be a better parent than a good many of my peers.

i thought it was cute. my parents didnt have me sign a contract, but i did certainly get many conversations. hell if i tell my mom that i am going to a bar to hang out with some friends later in the evening these days she gets all "well be SAFE. you dont have to drink if you dont want too. nothing good happens after midnight!"

also - when my mom dropped me off at college on the first day - she did say "of course i love you and i will support you, but you have until August 2004 to figure this stuff out and then i'm cutting you off"

beat it by 2 months!

This level of control over a kid scares the crap out of me. My parents were perfectly happy to let me and my brother live with our mistakes without holding them over our heads forever. (However, considering my brother dropped out of school, technically, this only got them a 50% success rate.)
There's a HUGE difference between actually making mature and responsible decisions, and just making decisions based on "My parents said so." Parents that want to keep their kids under their thumbs forever just don't get it.
