well, when you say "tackling in an open field" it kindof implies that they're running at you, like a drill. not that they're going to start and go straight for the corner and run around you.

open field means they are full speed and you are not yet moving, and they can go wherever they want.... so you are wrong.

and ssclark, this discussion isnt about being able to get a hit... but be able to hit the ball from what the first post says

i'll tell you what would be harder than all of that. out pole vaulting a world class pole vaulter. or out hurdling a world class hurdler.

a no hitter doesnt mean someone didnt hit the ball....means they didnt get on base

any of these things would be hard as fuck....

you still wouldnt beable to hit the ball. have any of you even faced a 100 mph fastball ? it's hard to make contact at 93 ... 100 is silly :x

^ we were refereing to the post made by what's his name that stated that baseball wasnt hard because pitchers never threw perfect games.

the only way it to compare how an average joe would do

i think it would be fairly easy to stop a penalty shot in hockey though

^^nah, just compare how the pros do in their sport....compare BA to shot stopped by goaly during a shoot out....i'm sure there would be way more statistics involved though

you ever faced an 80 mph penalty shot from 36 feet away?

dude i could hit high 80s low 90s when i was 16-17 years old, but i'd NEVER be able to stop an nfl rb in the open field

both are hard, granted, but the latter is harder

I think some of you dont understand how hard it is to hit a golf ball 300yds.

^^^I guarantee you I could hit a ML pitch before you could hit a golf ball 300yds.

Not saying I could do it consistently, but I would make contact before you hit it 300yds

Trying to even just hit a golf ball can make even some of the best athletes in the world look like fools, let alone hit it 300yds.

Said athlete would get a hit long before he could hit it 300+

I'm not getting in to this retarded argument but I bet 97% of this website would piss themselves if they had to get in the box against a live pitcher who could throw 90+ and break off a slider or curveball that looks like it's headed for your skull and crosses right over the heart of the plate...

and i like how people are acting like b/c they could hit some stiff's 85 mph fastball in high school that they could step up and look like anything but a drunk chick against a major leaguer...

We need to define this a lot better.

Are we talking about is it hard for

A)- A pro in said sport to do the task at hand...block a soccer kick, hit a MLB pitch, or hit a golf ball?

or

B)- An avg joe trying to do one of these tasks?

The damn golf shot is not comparable to these other two.

Sure, it's something that not that many people can do, but people who can do it will do it regularly.

The baseball shot and penalty kick is something that is difficult for even the best to do.

"OMF the hardest thing in the world is to run a 9.74 in the 100 meters!"

choosing what sports feat is the most difficult for joe schmoe off the street is retarded.

there are all sorts of things that are just flat out impossible.

i think that hitting a baseball has gotta be up there as one of most difficult things in sports, if not THE most.

Actually, if you wanna go on the pro level of things that are actually doable among pro athletes, the hole in one has to be the hardest. It happens only a few times a year on tour.

Hits happen all the fucking time, and of all the shows I have ever seen talk on this subject list hitting a HR in the majors as the hardest. A hit is just a hit, but a HR is something totally different.

does not compute......you are comparing people allowed to hit a major league baseball

i do agree though......hitting a golf ball 300 yards is prolly more obtainable

it just depends, like if i just try to make contact and touch the ball. i can hit 100+ from a pitcher easy
but when putting curve balls, screw balls, sliders, slurves, change ups, and so on into the mix...........i really dont have a chance and its luck if i do.

so really the fact of the ratio between the bat and the strike zone and the ball

vs

the ration of a soccer ball, the goal, and the goalkeeper

i really think baseball is harder.

The baseball/soccer comparison is stupid. It is mostly luck to stop a penalty kick. There isn't much skill or athleticism involved.

People mention that they could probably stop 1 in 20 PKs against a pro soccer player. I would say that the average person might be able to get a hand on 1 in 20 PKs, but not stop them. I would compare it to fouling off a pitch from a pro pitcher.

A soccer ball is kicked with significant velocity that it's not just about choosing the right side. Also, there are a lot of places where it is physically impossible to stop the ball. Anything anywhere near the post is impossible for a pro goalie to stop, and anything more than about arms length away from the center line would be nearly impossible for a lay person to stop.

And when we say hit a baseball, are we talking "get a hit" as in be able to make it to first base, or just get the ball in play somewhere. If it's just get the ball in play, I definitely say the PK is harder. If it's successfully get a hit, then I would go with baseball.

for the golf and baseball argument.....

the mechanics of swinging play a major role.....chances are, if you are a good baseball player, you could go out to the course and generate enough club speed to hit the ball 300 yards. I could hit it that far when I was 16. I could also get in the batting cages when I was in 7th grade and hit 90mph.

If you dont have good swing mechanics, you will never do either so you must compare only those who have good mechanics. A baseball is infinately times more difficult to hit than a golf ball due to the speed changes, movement, and even if you hit the ball...you have to get a base hit..meaning you have to avoid 9 players in the field.
