I'm physically here most of that time, but do maybe 4 hours of real work. We're allotted an hour for lunch but I usually take 1.5, no one notices and I still end up with downtime nearly every day because I work fast. I also take frequent bathroom & water breaks, go in a stairwell and chat on my cell phone a couple times a day, and I damn sure poop on company time. There's an unused office upstairs with construction & maintenance junk in it, where it's cool and lit only with natural light from the windows, a nice place to get away and chill out for a few minutes and watch the traffic go by, and wish I were out there on my way to the beach instead of rotting here for 7.5 hours a day.

^non-profits are a bit easier to work for. If you have slackerly tendencies, government is the best employer, as long as it's a large, established agency and not some little department whose funding is always hanging by a thread (I speak specifically of the TTA and visitors bureaus). Those guys are always wrapped up in making themselves look valuable and you'll be watched too closely. Big agencies don't care as long as you get your work done and it's adequate. Deadlines have little meaning in the government.

Hours at a customer site are usually much longer when we are doing tool installs in fabs. A typical day in Korea/Taiwan/Japan is 8am - 12am.

but I'm either out on calls, running down client issues, or on the phone for 75% of my day so usually two nights a week I work 10:00PM-4:00AM and I usually hit an extra 4-6 hours two Saturdays +/- a month

it's not bad though and being busy just means I'm doing lots of good stuff

If I had to guess I'd say if I worked at a comfortable pace (non-life shortening) it would take me 80 hours/week to sustain my level of activity so 50-60 isn't too bad, but I don't even have 30 seconds of down time during a given day - I'd just rather crank through it than work all the time

At my full time gig I work a 3 on 4 off schedule. That is I work 24 hours, off 24 hours, work 24, off 24, work 24 then off for 96 hours. Basically working 3 out of 9 days, or ~10 days a month. The hours are 0730-0800 the next day.

at my part time gig I work a rotating schedule that is based on the full time job, but i only work on the designated shift days M-F. The hours are 0700-1700.

my typical work cycle involves about a 34 hour shift, that is going from the full time straight to the part time, so 0730 on day 1 to 1700 on day 2, rinse and repeat. overall I work about 16-18 days a month, barring any overtime or picking up extra days

oh yeah i'm a firefighter, we work all holidays, weekends, whatever if it ends in "Y" somebody's there.
