The N&blOw printed the story on the day the Red & White Game was being held. It was pretty obvious that they wanted to print something negative that recruits and their parents would read if they picked up a newspaper that day. The article states something about how The College Inn could get State athletics in trouble. The NCAA mandates that no living quarters owned by the school or booster organization can have more than 50% of the residents be student-athletes (why I don't know, it seems kind of stupid if you ask me). Well The College Inn, which is owned by The Wolfpack Club, is about 30% student-athletes, which is well below the 50% mandate. The N&blOw though prints that one floor is 41% student-athletes as to show that we are close to the limit. But that number is still well under 50%, so it's a much ado about nothing, but the way it's written is to make it sound like if we don't watch ourselves we could be on NCAA probation soon. While the article should be about these dorms/apartment complexes that are owned by the booster organizations, it focuses soley on NC State and how it could one day get us on probation. If it was a real article on these type of booster organization owned complexes then they would have talked about ones at other schools in the area like at Duke or UNC's Granville Towers which has a number of student-athletes. The only thing they had about another school was a small blurb at the end of the story about a complex at FSU which has 49% student-athletes.

ok show me where i'm wrong...i'll bite...this is how i feel about it(and pretty much what i know based on this thread)
1. news and observer starts investigating ncsu cause the college inn has a fuck ton of football and some basketball players, and prolly some baseball players(they do, i know at least 2)
2. apparently there is 50 percent or less of the people at college inn are football/baseball/basketball players, so N&O say they didnt break the rules
now how in the fuck does that make N&O the bad guy? 4/30/2008 2:50:15 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
Because it's a non-story.
BREAKING NEWS
THIS JUST IN
COLLEGE INN IS LESS THAN 50% ATHLETES
WHICH DOESN'T BREAK ANY RULES
BUT IF THERE WERE MORE THAN 50% ATHLETES
THAT WOULD BREAK SOME RULES

^^Because they imply in the article that NC State has done something wrong, or is about to, when in reality College Inn is just like other dorms/apartments all over.
Why run a story about a non-story?
Stop being obtuse. Hell, even my Carolina friend said it was a blatant troll by the N&O targeting NCSU.

^^^ Where did you find that? I find it hard to believe that tOSU, Texas, and some of the other big time schools don't have booster owned housing. The NCAA rule though applies to any kind of dorm/apartment complex owned by the university or affiliated with the university. I believe the rule started sometime at the end of the 70s or beginning of the 80s. A lot of colleges used to have athletic dorms back in the day that were exclusive to athletes.

ok. so they investigated and found nothing. is that worth a story? do you think they print everything they investigate and find no rules/laws broken on the front page of the relevant section with a huge picture and huge print? of course not.
if they had student quotes, they would have used them.
why is there no corresponding story on Granville Towers were the whole UNC bball team lives? - oh yeah...i forgot...they are less than 50% (like college inn) making it perfectly ok.

ok. so they investigated and found nothing. is that worth a story? i think so...i'd feel more assured if the paper was like we investigated and found no rules being broken, rather than just always wondering if it might have been breaking rules(cause if you woulda told me they broke the rules i woulda not been surprised)do you think they print everything they investigate and find no rules/laws broken on the front page of the relevant section with a huge picture and huge print?of course not of course not.
if they had student quotes, they would have used them. thats a good point...but maybe the person didnt want to come off as someone that hates sports or the athletes....that person mighta got death threats if they had their name published...or might have been looked at as a narc or something
why is there no corresponding story on Granville Towers were the whole UNC bball team lives? - oh yeah...i forgot...they are less than 50% (like college inn) making it perfectly ok. while they both have under 50 percent apparently, i bet ncsu is way closer to the 50 percent line

maybe worth a story but not the extent to what was written, especially on the day of the spring game when there a million things to write about and recruits in town. it isnt difficult to understand.
people can be quoted anonymously.
we are both under 50% and hence, perfectly ok. but, how do we KNOW for sure Granville is? was it also investigated and reported on? nope. its the same EXACT thing and it has been around a lot longer than the college inn.4/30/2008 3:59:33 PM |
