$2 dollar buck tip

hmm, I could try out an indie chick place, but I'd probably have issues with indie guys

i don't really have problems with anyone. which, luckily for me, means i can have fun anywhere. i only have problems if the music is consistently bad and/or the drinks are consistently expensive.

issues?

anyway, people actually wear all sorts of shit in there

but you can instantly see the difference between the friendly-polo-shirt-wearing-salesman-by-day

and the i-came-to-this-bar-to-get-pussy-because-that's-what-you-do-at-bars-and-wait-these-girls-are-weird-polo-shirt-wearing-guy

plus i'm constantly wearing shorts to jp, because i'm a generally warm person...so i don't fit the look at all. by the book, i should be wearing worn out skinny jeans that are rolled up if i'm hot, but i can't wear skinny jeans because playing hockey has made my ass huge

nah i totally feel pilgrimshoes. i roll into jackpot wearing polo shirts all the time, who the fuck cares. i do get weird looks sometimes.. which, honestly, is lame as shit. i guess i'm not cool enough to go by a one-letter name and wear v-neck shirts

i don't want to hate on vinylbandit, cuz as far as I know, I've never heard him "spin" at JP, but why do DJ's there get tips?

Well, actually, let me first ask, do DJs there get paid by the bar? Someone told me they do, and in that case, why tips? What's the difference between him and a dude with an ipod? Cuz I don't see the difference. Gathering obscure 80's music off of piratebay isn't necessarily difficult.

Just sayin; if I'm wrong, enlighten me.

i think they get paid by the bar (not like a lot)
and free drinks all night
its a job
ipods can't do all the mixy stuff
he plays in the meantime
djs are neat
they like what they do and want to do it
people tip if they feel like it. its not like you're required to tip afterall

[Edited on July 24, 2008 at 11:14 PM. Reason : or something like that. i don't really know.]

maybe i'm going on the wrong nights, but i never hear any mixing, as in realtime beat matching. I don't even expect turntables; i hung out with some djs in dc, and i know you can do some crazy shit just with a laptop. All I hear at JP though is a playlist.

there are DJs who choose shitty fucking music, and there are people like vinylbandit who choose to play great music and therefore get tips

it's not that hard to figure out

and it's not like an ipod is the only tool he uses: there's actually, you know, vinyl

[Edited on July 24, 2008 at 11:24 PM. Reason : if you want mixing, go to a club or something: there's no need to fuck up a great song by scratching]

mixing doesn't necessarily mean scratching. may i suggest http://www.thehoodinternet.com/?

the pianists at Rum Runners get tips because they know how to play and sing the songs. the djs at JP get tips because they have a large enough hard drive to have the song someone wants? because they have something obscure enough that some drunk hipster will remember listening to it strapped to a car seat in their mom's minivan? Do you tip djs at weddings? I just don't get it.

actually some people tip djs at weddings.

but its not like those people are being forced to tip. if you come to jackpot you don't have to tip. the people that come there want to be there, hear the songs and they tip if they want.

i am just confused by this whole argument i decided.

fair enough.

i guess i'm just one of those people that thinks tipping is starting to get out of control. a tip jar at Jersey Mike's? why? starbucks? congratulations, you made my coffee.

tipping is such a strange american custom. how bout we just pay people a living wage or pay accordingly? play your playlist at JP and get free beer; that should be good enough. serve me and rely on your employer to pay your rent, not trust me to give you a good tip.

oh jesus, not another thread that devolves into a tipping argument

don't tip if you don't want to, but stop fucking complaining when other people choose to

not to mention that waitresses/waiters cannot "rely on their employers to pay their rent" because they wouldn't make nearly enough if it weren't for tips

maybe that's why i said, "how bout we just pay people a living wage?" i meant that maybe we should do *that* so that people can rely on their employers for rent rather than me, the common consumer.

heaven fucking forbid i turn a thread about tipping into a thread about tipping. i thought you were a better troll than this.

I'm not trolling

I'm just saying this fight has been had a million times and it never goes anywhere

and until they change how the entire waiter/waitress payment system works, there's still at least one reason to do it

people tip DJs if they want to, I'm sorry you have a problem with it

[Edited on July 25, 2008 at 12:34 AM. Reason : but there's no reason to ruin a thread by asking "WHY?!?!" at people who feel like it]

i'm obviously the one that fails at trolling.

gg StillFuchsia

well, now i feel bad. I'll try to get back on track:

What's your favorite song to hear at the JP?

I'd like to hear Don Henley's timeless classic, "The Boys of Summer" again.

Here's a $texas. Thanks

i have my laptop with me in case i need to pull something weird off of it

but i mostly play CDs and vinyl

and never think more than two songs ahead, because that's boring, so no playlists

although i will play "in the meantime" at the drop of a hat, because it's always good for at least three bucks

as for this:

Quote :
"Do you tip djs at weddings?"

First, a DJ at a wedding gets at least eight times what I get for the same period of time. Second, the people in charge of the wedding are already telling him what to play, hence the higher rate. Third, I have and will tip a wedding DJ for being good, but it's only happened once.

I can also be bribed to play shit I don't like.

I don't really know why you'd expect beatmatching at a place like JP, though. How the fuck am I supposed to beatmatch Spoon and Pavement?
