when i was in school i had a part time (it was M-F, but still only ~20 hours a week) we had sick days, but if you didn't take them they just paid you for that time, so they didn't care when you took them. i would rarely take a sick day (in fact in the 2.5 years i worked there i took zero for actually being sick) because i preferred the extra check at the end of the year.

I did this once when I was in high school. Manager had scheduled me on a day I had asked off for about a month in advance. I couldn't find anyone to swap shifts with so I called out. And you know what, they called me out on not being sick. And I felt kind of bad since I had put my coworkers in a shitty position that day.

The point being, I don't really care if someone decides to have less than admirable work ethic because a lot of us have been there before. What I think is crap is lying to your boss for a personal day, then getting pissed when he calls you out on it. I don't think you have any room to complain. And I also think it's pretty shitty because you're putting your coworkers in a bad situation. I remember those days when someone called out "sick" when you knew damn well they weren't and you got stuck with extra work thanks to them. It doesn't exactly inspire camaraderie for your fellow coworker.

And Nighthawk, you honestly couldn't have taken your kids to this stuff without your wife there too?

So she works 8 shifts a month and has called in 2 or 3 times for either you, the kids, or her being sick and then last night with supposed car trouble. Sounds like she has put her employer and co-workers in a bind for half of her shifts (with at least one or more being on weekends).

I think that management has heard a long chain of excuses (real or not they equal 50% of the shifts) so now that she made one that they can "call out" they chose to do so. At least she is in food service were she can find another job very easily, almost as easily as they can call her out, fire her, and hire another person.

Again, I'm not really pissed because he called her out, so much as I am that they never call out others who are doing much worse shit and have been there far less time. Sorry its been more than a month that the kids have been sick. Probably called in 3 times in the last 2 months. I told the guy that it was a fuel pump that went bad, and me and a guy I know from a local business swapped it. I can just go get one and take it up there. But it seems pretty strange to me that somebody has been there as long as her is going to be given shit about putting them in a bind (which I completely understand that she did) when two others also put them in a bind by fucking on the job and then a 20 year old girl beating the shit out of the 39 year old cook when he didn't get her some drugs she wanted or something.

Yea. I have taken personal days, but if you do decide to lie, you have to accept the consequences if you get caught. I am taking a personal day this week actually to watch a football match; I will either tell my boss A) I have something to do or B) Its the UEFA Cup final. Either way I am not fabricating a story which will come back to bite me. Service industry is full of situations like this and you have to know when to pick your battles. Unless this job is really crucial, it might be best to walk away. There have to be better options for employment, waiting is full of turnover.

There are two kinds of gainfully employed people
1) Employees
2) Managers

What is sad is that you and your wife justify calling in for x,y,z. Obviously you have never effectively managed anyone in a workplace. I can actually project what happened...you called in with car trouble and the person who actually did show up probably got pissed, blew up on the manager because he/she had to pull your weight, and they are probably both calling you our on your bull.

I manage 35 remote part time employees and I get this sort of thing every now and then. I normally just say that you can have 2 weekends off per quarter (which would be missing 4 shifts since we only work weekends) and if you take more than that off you are going to be a backup because someone else would love to have your hours. I have the luxury of providing a better than average part time wage and bonus where I always have piles of resumes so if someone calls to ask off for x,y,z or they are late because x,y,z then I am just as happy to tell them to enjoy their weekend no matter that their excuse was. Oh yea, I decided to impliment this when I caught an employee at the Coca Cola 600 last year when he had asked off because he couldnt get the car out of the driveway bc of a bad starter. He tried to make up something until I cut him off, gave him a beer, and told him he had one more weekend off this quarter so he better use it up at the lake next time his car gives out on him.

Perhaps her manager was already having a really bad day so he was in a horrible mood, and when she called out for the 3rd time in a month it just pushed him over the edge. In any event she lied about being sick so she has no right to be angry at her boss for asking her for proof.

or go to advance, buy some parts you may need for your car anyway, and tell them you put them on yourself

for example, just about anyone can get a belt on a car, but if you "havent done it before", you can "take hours" to get it done
