Yes, you need to keep your heartrate up to get into shape. You can say half an hour but I can't get a good workout in under an hour. If you have to have a video game to make you workout then you are a sad individual. Motivation comes from within, you dont need a game to make working out "fun" you need some goals and a life.

Where she works she can rent them out after work and during the weekend. The only time we can't have one is during the workday, which is no problem.

My room mate sophomore year lost 35 pounds playing DDR.

Dude, get off your high horse.
It doesn't make you sad or pathetic if you play video games to get in shape. Video games are simply a medium that can be used to help people work out. It's no different than popping in a workout video and copying the movements in the comfort of someone's living room.
That's the big key there. In the comfort of someone's living room. Some people are nervous and shy about going to a gym. Some people need to get started in their exercise programs before they can move up to a gym. Others don't want to have to pay the monthly fees to do it.
I'm sure that the people who do play video games to get in shape are also aware of all the other mediums that can be utilized to get in shape. If they can get in shape and be happy with it, then that's all that matters.
Oh yeah, by the way, I play DDR to get in shape. And I know how to get out and jog, play tennis and basketball outside, and pick up the free weights now and then. I'm such a lamer for using DDR as my primary source of cardio. 5/27/2008 1:23:27 PM |

i had preordered this 2 months ago (when I preordered mario kart too ) so i've had it the past week. Finally hooked it up and started playing friday night, its sweet.
Its more of a workout than you'd expect, but all the different games are cool. The feedback makes it much better than videos (IMO) if you're really wanting to loose weight. I'm genuinely curious how many people start saying they've lost XX pounds since they've been using it in 3-6 months. 6/1/2008 4:29:00 PM |

i want this so bad. I jokingly suggested this to my friends when the Wii first came out because of its motion-sensing. I was like, "man, it'd be cool to have some action-like game that would get people moving. then video games would actually be good for you." 6/2/2008 9:17:31 AM |

all this because you can do it without leaving the house.. " |
I paid 2 grand for the convenience of having a treadmill in the house so I could do cardio while watching TV at home, even though I have a gym membership to a Gold's that is 1 mile down the road. Does that make me lazy too?

I got one from the first batch and still use it. I'll try to do 20-30 minutes a day just to get my heart rate going since I don't need to lose weight. There's about 5-7 exercises that I stick to mostly that seem to be the most effective and hit the others rarely. 6/20/2008 9:05:45 PM |

I had it preordered on Amazon. It shipped free and arrived on the Thursday of its release week. I keep in pretty good shape on my own but the wii fit has me up and wiggling when I'd otherwise be sitting around and doing nothing. I probably play more than I would because of the competitive aspect of the top 10 boards. I try to get on every day for at least the body test and so far I've only missed last Friday.
I think the one thing I hate the most about it is that three of the aerobics games are "running" and nothing will screw my feet up worse than running in place. Everything else is all right.
The thing I hate almost as much is that I'm made aware that I weigh twenty pounds more than people think I do. 6/21/2008 6:58:07 PM |

I went to Target Sunday morning and got one. There was a line of 15 people that showed up right around 7:50 and I believe they only had 12.
It seems to be that the Target's are getting more in per shipment and more consistently. 7/7/2008 1:21:36 PM |

For some reason the board isn't reading some movements
and in a couple games it'll say to lift my right leg and doesn't do anything when I lift my right leg, but it reacts when I lift my left leg. 7/13/2008 7:40:07 PM |

Got it yesterday. The ski jumping is pretty fun and the board is uber sensitive. Although it said my weight was like 147 lb... at my annual physical about 3 weeks ago I was at 166 lb, so I think something may be a little awry.
Anyway, after completing a workout with it, my muscles aren't sore or anything, but I can definitely feel that they are a little more worked out than normal. Awesome. 7/22/2008 8:56:02 AM |

I don't have a wii fit (yet), but a friend of mine does and I honestly have a blast playing it. They have puzzles and stuff that make it challenging and fun while you work on things like balance for example. FWIW, if you really go at it with the hula hoop, you can really work your abs and thighs. I mean, I was REALLY feeling it after doing several thousands (literally) of it. And my heart rate was increased too. Maybe not as high as if I was sprinting for 1/2 mile, but still, it was raised. Just moving your body helps some. Sure this thing isn't the new bowflex, but it's a great way to do something with your body other than sitting there and moving only your hands the entire time, all the while playing a game and having fun.
^as for the measuring, I too believe it's off a little. The board shouldn't be taken as the Bible. just a reference.

all you people forget about carpet padding because most people play this game on carpet. if you have a 10 lb pad, you'll be 10 lbs lighter. i bet you have a 10 lb pad which would bump to 157 and i'd give or take 3 pounds depending on the scale accuracy which puts you within 6 pounds of what you would expect.
my weight is EXACTLY 10 lbs lighter on wii (berber carpet with 10 lb pad).
ski jumping is actually kind of tough to perfect imo.

So how exactly does it measure your running performance? I did the running on the first day and got 70% but last night I did it and got 42%. As far as I can tell, I did the exact same thing and stayed behind the guy at a steady pace. What am I doing wrong? 7/23/2008 1:38:59 PM |
shmorri2 All American 10003 Posts user info edit post |
it measures your running via the hand remote. The more you move/shake it up and down, the faster you run. Be careful though! Run too fast and you'll fall/trip 7/23/2008 2:14:35 PM |

Well yeah I knew it measured it from the motion of the Wiimote but I can't figure out how it determines what is "good" running and what is "bad" running. 7/23/2008 2:21:30 PM |
