Quote :
"I wanted to show that although professors are hired to do research and
teach, the research they do is often part of their teaching (helping
graduate students). Many students have a misconception that professors put
research as their number one priority and therefore can afford to be
rude/unfair in the classroom. The students who introduced me to the
website were looking up the professors they'd had like this and were
amazed that their salaries were so high for doing a job that they
obviously did not show any joy for anymore -- whether it be a classroom of
students or just one-on-one, portraying a negative attitude has a lasting
effect.

If I had more than 500 words, I would have posed a question that has
always baffled me: How much do classevals really matter? The likability of
a professor has a great impact on how students respond to course
evaluations. The unfavorable professors obviously have low scores, yet the
university allows them to continue to teach. Their attitudes skew the real
purpose of course evaluations. Even though a student learned the course
material well, the bad vibe they got from a "mean" professor would result
in a poor evaluation overall. I cannot count the number of times I've
heard a student say "I can't wait to do MY classevals", frustrated by a
professor's lack of explanation for something or refusal to answer an
apparently idiotic question. If professors displayed a neutral attitude in
the classroom, course evaluations would be more valid and valuable tools.

As an E115 instructor I had problem students, I had to answer questions
I've gone over a million times, I had to deal with cheating cases, and I
had bad days, too. But I never refused to answer a question because it was
"beneath" me, or acted short with students -- my attitude remained
constant in class and as such, I was evaluated as an instructor who was
"enthusiastic and passionate about teaching", qualities that I learned
from my favorite professors and wished to portray to others.

The only way the salary issue really plays in here is because $X a year
(or even 9 months!) should be compensation enough to fake a smile and
feign respect for a few hours every week."

this isn't grade school. it's not the professor's job to make it interesting. it's the professor's job to teach the material. it's your job as a student to be interested.

True, but wouldn't you say a professor that is enthusiastic and seems a little happy to be there is a more effective teacher than one who acts like they would rather watch paint dry?

I think a high school teacher's job is to teach the material. In college, there is a level of responsibility that shifts, as college is the pursuit of higher learning, and can't be that way if a professor has to continually catch students up.

^^ no. i want a professor who comes in and knows exactly what they're talking about, and lectures. not one that wastes time being excited or trying to make it fun. i'm not here to have fun, i'm here to hear a lecture. lectures are, by definition, not fun.

if you want teachers who teach b/c they're excited, go take a philosophy class at a community college or something.

You can be enthused about how interesting the material is & give an effective lecture without wasting time or doing silly things to "make it fun"

the point is i'm absolutely sick of people crying about having uninteresting teachers. if you're not interested, get out.

Fortunately, being in a small department has left me with pretty good professors over the years. Even the uninteresting (poor engrish) professors are willing to meet one-on-one whenever someone needs it.

the simple fact is people will learn the material better when they are interested in it. a boring lecture becomes ineffective compared to a lecture presenting the same material in an 'interesting' way.

I think it's funny that they just changed the URL, but jessiejepp's immediate reaction is that she thinks she's important enough to have "stirred things up too much."

I'd be pissed if I was Moeser and a Vice Chancellor made more than me. Especially if it was some fucking Information Technology Service douchebag.
