I'm thinking about getting a Motorcycle. I've never ridden one before, however, if I become more serious and I find a bike I "like," then I'll go about taking a class at Johnston Co. Community College to learn and get my license.
My question is which bike to get? I'm 6' tall and 150lbs. I'm looking in a 250cc class and was hoping for a standard/naked bike and not a sportsbike or a dualsport/motard. I was recommended by two other people to get a motard or a dualsport. I was looking into Honda Rebels an they suggested that with my height, the Rebel 250 would be a bit small for me. I just want to know what bikes I should consider when I go out to see them in person. I'll already visited http://www.motorcycle.com and the rebel seems to be one of the only bikes I "like."
I'm also hoping to stay around 2k for a slightly used bike although I might just end up getting a new one. Speaking of price, is there really any negotiations on new bikes (similar to that of cars?) I did read AntecK7's post in http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=522461 however, I'm looking more for specific models. My reason for a ~250cc platform is the ~70mpg benefit, however, I also want something more fun than a moped...

^ just picked up an '86 honda rebel 250 (which is really 234cc)
i'm 6'0" and 230lbs, and it does just fine...i can understand how, over time, it might be boring if you're looking for fun, but it's incredibly functional, fun (enough), air-cooled (so it's really simple to maintain and repair) and it was CHEAP

remember anythign old is going to possibly need mecanical work. I would suggest you bring somebody with you who knows thigns to look for. (leaky forks, rash ectra). Ask them to have the engine cold when you get there, so you know that it will start and run fine when cold. 10/16/2008 2:46:43 PM |

I'm going to try to stick with a "newer" bike than one that's older than I am. It also seems the rate of depreciation drops off about halfway what the bike was when it was new. The price difference between an '80s model to a '00s model seem to be only $1,300. If that's the case, I'd rather put down that extra money for something much newer and needing nothing more than an oil change. Kinda interesting that 2 bikes I've listed have dents on the tanks, makes me think they've fallen over or something.

The bike market is pretty fluid, and if it runs it will have value. I think that most peopel will outgrow a rebel pretty quickly. The difference between 55 and 70mpg isnt that much in your pocket.
On the flip side, if you buy a rebel for 2k-3k you can probably sell it a year later and at most take a $250 hit, if you dont profit.
Buy as it gets colder, youll get a better deal, in the spring and fall prices tend to rise.
