Haha I paid off half of my CC debt this summer. Then I spent it all back and some! I should go get my paychecks and make a payment.
Does it seem like a good idea to pay off my CC debt with student loan money? The loan has a lower interest rate. 8/11/2008 9:34:48 AM |

you let that student loan get out of hand and its gonna be worse than any credit card out there 8/11/2008 9:35:59 AM |

A little below 750. Unfortunately things have been a little rough this year and the credit card debt has grown waaaay too much. I need to get it in line ASAP 8/12/2008 1:19:52 AM |

As far as I know, the credit bureaus don't know I exist. I've never had a credit card or borrowed money, and my wife's name is on the mortgage. 8/12/2008 8:46:39 AM |

when they pulled it for my mortgage stuff a couple months ago, it was 755.
probably lower now, because my debt to income ratio is pretty bad with three mortgages right now. 8/12/2008 8:52:40 AM |

i don't really want to post my credit score on the internet (it is plenty good though) but i did get a report recently and was surprised to see that my credit went up significantly AFTER buying a house. i figured adding that much debt would hurt but i guess having another year with good payment history weighs more. 10/19/2008 9:54:56 PM |

no, it's supposed to work that way
buying a house and making good on your mortgage payments makes your score go up with a quickness if you've got a median one 10/19/2008 9:57:10 PM |

^^for my purposes it's a good thing because I try to stay out of databases. I've opted out of the credit system entirely. I'm sure I could use it responsibly, but why pay a fee to use someone else's money when I can use my own for free?

^ Ditto. If you have a credit card with no fees (IE: SECU Credit Card) and you pay off your balance responsibly, you'll be saving yourself money if anything (a small amount, like maybe pennies and nickles depending on your Credit Limit, how much you charge each month, etc...). You won't pay interest and you'll just offset what you spend so it's like an interest free loan... Just don't abuse it.
Oh and using a CC online is much better than using a Visa Debit Card. Some hotels only accept a CC (Visa Debit Cards are not valid for payment). If you need to dispute a charge, a CC is easier and safer.

say what? thats not the point. for responsible people who can already pay it out of their pocket there is no reason NOT to get a credit card. In fact I get paid to use my credit card. And I have never paid a fee.10/20/2008 6:31:44 PM |

DO NOT USE http://www.freecreditreport.com.
The reason it asks for your credit card is not for verification but it is actually signing you up for a credit monitoring service for $15 a month. It doesn't clearly state that but you'll start seeing credit card charges in the coming months. 10/20/2008 6:48:52 PM |

You're costing yourself money. Insurance companies use your credit score to give you a rate, so having a good credit score would give you a better rate. I'm pretty sure no credit isn't much better than bad credit in that respect.
Not to mention the fact that I earn from 1 to 5% back on everyday purchase.
And not to mention the extra buyer's protection you get by paying with a credit card.10/20/2008 8:23:46 PM |

You can get one free credit report from each of the 3 major reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
However the FICO is not free and the maximum that can be charged to view it is $8. 10/20/2008 11:46:54 PM |
