Yeah, maybe in July when the smoke clears and they start letting employees activate them, we'll see some F&F500 plans with the instinct, but who knows.

The rep that hooked the mogul up said she had to pull all kind of strings to get herself an instinct activated on the plan she has.

Just wanted to say my wife & I got one of these yesterday. Contract w/ Alltel was up, wanted an iPhone 3G, but just loved the service we get with CDMA so much.

$129 a pop is a steal for this. It's no iPhone, but it's solid in its own right. Typing on it is amazingly easy and fast.

Better still, this whole "you have to activate it on an unlimited plan" got nixed on June 18th. Escp. if you're a couple, this is a heck of a deal: http://newsreleases.sprint.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=127149&p=irol-newsArticle_newsroom&ID=1167445&highlight=

Customers can choose from Everything plans for individuals starting at just $69.99 per month for 450 voice minutes or Talk/Message/Data Share plans for families starting at $129.99 per month for 1500 voice minutes to share between two lines.

In other words, I have 2 phones w/ unlimited data, push Gmail (well, it auto-checks every 5-10 mins, good enough), unlimited pic/vid/text messaging and more mins. per month than we'll ever use for $130.

Oh, and I get huge Sprint corporate discount because of my employer which applies to Family Share plans. Not a bad deal at all.

Sero 30.00/month plan has unlimited data, but no instinct. That's what I meant.

it never was on an "unlimited plan." The stipulation has always been it had to be on an "everything" plan. Meaning, for single lines, the Everything 450, 900, or simply everything plan. and the new share plans just came out on June 15th.

played w/ one at a conference I went to... the guy who'd bought it saw my iphone and wanted to inspect, so we swapped. After playing w/ the iphone he said the samsung was a alright imitation, but he said he'd rather have the iphone, he'd not looked at them yet and was really impressed.

a co-worker is using a demo Instinct (his brother works at Sprint) for the past couple days and i've played with it some - some features are decent, but overall the phone feels like a failure, at least as far as many of the built-in applications. The iPhone has nothing to worry about with this thing.

It's hard to say what is Samsung's and what is Sprint's fault. I think there is blame enough to go around, though. Samsung's fault - the touchscreen, for example, is just not up to snuff. I didn't realize that it wasn't multi-touch and you couldn't do real swiping for flicking with it. I found the tactile feedback (small vibration) to be more of a distraction than a benefit.

Sprint's fault, i think - all the online services are basically crap. whenever you go to "add application", it basically takes you to a webpage (which I assume is served by sprint) where you add so-called applications. Except the application list is pitiful, the organization is horrible, and the search takes you to some kind of weird hybrid search where it searches for applications, and it does a normal websearch..... he wanted a "Stocks" application (which isn't built in, for some reason), and a search on the "get applications" page returned no applications, then a bunch of web links, like if you had Googled "stocks"

the streaming TV is pretty cool, but after watching Comedy Central for a couple minutes, the battery died completely, so that was the end of that.....

Just wanted to say I returned this thing on the 29th day of my Sprint trial.

It seemed okay at first, but it began to lockup at least twice a day and as mentioned above, the features are garbage once you really start digging in. Plus, Sprint coverage at my house (where my cellphone is my only phone) ranged between 0-1 bars, and I consistently dropped calls.

I get 3-5 bars on AT&T here, so needless to say I'm waiting for my iPhone 3G backorder to be fulfilled. Never been more relieved than I was to port my # out and return this thing.

i have had it for a few days, have minor complaints about it (back button can be tricky to hit) but all in all, i really like it. I wear a lot of skinny jeans (no homo) and the fact that the instinct is narrower than the iphone was almost enough to win me over in itself

that is b/c unlike apple, samsung is allowing people to write code for their own apps for the phone

i have no prob with swiping and flicking thru webpages and pics on my instinct

and that's why you are able to turn that feature

and when this happens to me, i just change to the extra battery provided when i bought the phone.

You just sound like all the other skeptics out there. Yes the instinct seems like more of a bare bones phone when it comes to apps but give it til after the 29th of Aug, when the app design contest is over. Yes, a contest that allows users to design their own applications for the phone. PLEASE show me the day that Apple allows that.

I really dont see why people are hating on this phone so much. it's not an iphone, it wasn't meant to be one. Give me something that the iphone can do that the instinct can't and i can reply with things the iphone can't that the instinct can.

^I am hearing you-but Sprint is the one who keeps comparing it to the iPhone. Even the Instinct home page mentions the word 'iPhone' 5 times!

I bought it. $129 + tax from best buy with no rebate. I like that.

the battery life kinda sucks when you start getting into tv - but I have a second battery. which is pretty cool.

I love the gmail interface. I surf the net...it's pretty cool.
I love the text message system - voicemail and the gps is neat! It has traffic checker...it's neat.

are you serious? was this really written on August 16, 2008?
Have you not seen that Apple released an SDK (i.e. they allowed "people to write code for their own apps for the phone") 6 months ago, and when the App Store opened along with the release of the 3G iPhone it was heralded almost as an unqualified success.

I'm not being a skeptic. I used the Instinct and played with a lot of its features, and sorry, but most of the phone just felt half-baked.

Their marketing sucks, it brands them as imitation/knock-off iphones.

i actaully never new that. i just remember my friends with the original iphone saying that you couldnt design your own. i guess apple caught wind of the competition's intentions and decided it was a good idea.

ok then.
either Apple "caught wind", or that was their intention all along but so much effort was put into completing the first iPhone they couldn't get the SDK done for another year. Either way, i think any iPhone owner will tell you that it was worth the wait. just check out the iPhone thread to see people talking about applications, or any sites like this that highlight good apps

fyi, i just got one of these from radio shack yesterday for what i consider to be a pretty good deal. they were more than happy to price match the $59.99 "web only" deal that's currently on sprint.com.

i haven't had a chance to mess with it much yet, but so far i like it a lot. it's certainly a ridiculous improvement over the ic502 i had. i've been wanting to move to something like this for a long time, but i was hesitant to give up my direct connect because i work in the construction industry where it's widely used. i don't think it'll be that big of a deal though.

couple of questions if anyone knows:

1. what's the current status of the whole phone as modem/tethering/#777 thing? i did it sparingly with my ic502 for a while, but heard/read some horror stories of sprint catching on and issuing mega bills so i quit. i don't see why it should matter if i'm paying for an unlimited data plan, but we all know how that kind of logic goes sometimes.

2. what's the best browser app out now? sprint's version kind of sucks as i figured it would. i was using opera mini on my ic502 and like it, but i didn't know if there might be something even better for this phone.

1. I did it for a while before I got an internet connection at my new house. Never had a problem.

2. I'm using opera mini. It's good enough for the 30 minutes a week or so I use it to surf.

i've been tethering sporadically over the past couple of weeks just for the hell of it. no abnormal charges on my first bill.

anyone know of a way to stream music over bluetooth? the sprint player won't do it. third party app? pandora maybe? i've got a head unit in my vehicle that supports a2dp, but so far the only thing i can get to work is the basic phone call functions. i've got an extra 3.5" aux in jack that would work fine, but that's not nearly as baller.

so far, i'm still really impressed with everything overall after a few tweaks here and there. i'd have to rate it just a bit under the iphone's i've played with in terms of build quality and being "user friendly", but for what i paid and all the extras included like an extra battery, etc. it's about even i guess.

I've got a Sony BT-2500 h/u, and to get the a2dp you have to change the source to "bt audio." Hope this helps.

^^ha, yeah i wish. unfortunately i'm a penny pinching bastard when it comes to buying electronics, and all the extended contract to get a discount, etc. bullshit that phone companies do just re enforces that further. i refuse to give them any more money than i have to. this phone will be with me for at least 2 years unless i manage to destroy it. any idea what pricing on the pre will be just out of curiosity? i'd assume at least $250-300 even with available discounts/rebates considering the current prices of the htc and htc pro.

^yeah, i've fiddled with all the settings on the head unit and scoured the owner's manual with no luck. so you're saying that you're able to stream music from your instinct to your head unit just fine? i assumed it was probably purposely restricted to phone call functions only in an attempt to curb file sharing or something. a quick google search last night didn't turn up much info to my specific problem, but there were some things i found where people weren't able to use bt headsets and listen to music/radio/tv. that leads me to believe it's not the head unit, but i dunno...

on another note, my search also turned up that there are rumors of the "voice signal" system eventually having two way/push to talk capability. that would be nice, though i haven't really missed it a bit so far.

okay, so i'm thinking now that you're correct and it's just an issue with my head unit. i just updated the phone to the latest software/firmware and went out to mess with it, and it now seems to be attempting to route the music through bt when it's connected to the headunit (the external speaker shuts off when it connects). so, there must be some setting somewhere i'm missing. damned if i can figure out where it is though, guess i'll get in touch with the place i bought it or the manufacturer.

okay, so i've been abusing the hell out of PAM lately on purpose. i've also forced the phone to run EVDO only. it's great, not much difference from RR. nothing abnormal so far.

i'm starting a new job soon that will involve working indirectly for sprint, so that's why i'm being so bold about it. i figure if any crazy charges happen i can get them taken care of when my phone is switched over to the company's plan. so, if any of you need sales/technical/repair advice i'll do my best to help here or in the store. keep in mind i'm a n00b though.
