Enough of this bullshit though. Moron, do you think Iran is a "essentially a democracy", as you put it? Or do you simply think that the people there would like for it to be a democracy? They are not the same thing.

Russia, even with the recent crackdowns, is more democratic than Iran. C'mon, how can you have a democracy without opposition? Sure, they have elections, but those elections are simply to participate in the Islamic Republican Party. And if candidates are not deemed "suitable" by the guardian council, they are banned from running for office. Any independent party that attempts to gain political power is declared illegitimate.
Tell me, does that sound like a democracy to you?

was the southern united states not a democracy when the only political party was the democrats? What about the United States of America after the destruction of the Federalists and only the Democrat-Republicans were around?
Russia basically has one political party right now, the "We Love Putin" Party.
Don't be quick with your absurd ill-founded analogies.
As for banning political parties? That happens all the time in WEstern Europe. You should pull your head out of your ass at least once. You might actually enjoy the sunlight.
Also, forgot to mention, the Peoples Republic of North Korea has multiple political parties. Does that make them democratic?

Fuck, what are we talking about here.
Back to the topic. I would switch from "undecided" to "McCain" if Obama continues to push his massive spending proposals, and cannot articulate how we are going to pay for them. As it stands, I expect a strong pivot to the center, with less of an emphasis on government spending and more on his differences with Bush, and by extension McCain. 6/6/2008 3:15:34 PM |

^^Yeah, I think we're both missing the point and derailing the thread.
Back on topic, the fervor of Obama supporters compared to the lukewarm reception that McCain gets is one of the biggest factors in this election. I can't see any scenario where McCain "steals" a significant portion of current Obama supporters, unless the race becomes extremely racially polarized. Therefore, McCain's best bet is probably to hold on to his supporters as best he can, try to snag some independents, and hope for the best.

^^We'll see. That strategy could backfire and haunt them for years. Decades even.
People don't forget dirty tricks in politics. The Republicans already have a bad name in that regard, and trying to "Jesse Helms" this election would sacrifice the party's political future.
I can see a few crazies on the right making racist remarks and trying to stir the pot, but I doubt you'll see a concerted effort on the part of the RNC to make this election all about race. Maybe a little subversive innuendo and associations with controversial black leaders, but that's mostly fair game.

Nastoute,
Yah!! The Republicans are so mean and nasty. We Democrats are so much smarter!
Remember when they accused John Kerry of relentless flipflopping, taking quotes out of context or on trivial issues? Man that really made me mad! Those Repubs....oh looks like the Dems are the ones doing it this year. http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/9111.html http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/05/20/obama-mccain-flip-flopping-on-cuba
Well, um, do you remember in 2004 when the RNC made big deal about John Kerry's rich heiress wife? Like that even matters?!?! Man I can't believe some people would...oh looks like the DNC is doing that too. http://www.democrats.org/a/2008/05/cindy_mccain_at.php
Well, remember in 2000 when the Republicans didn't so much run against Gore, but instead focused on his less popular predecessor? Man, why can't the Republicans run against the candidate they're actually facing....oh wait. http://www.bush-mccainchallenge.com/ http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/05/obama_bushmccain_have_a_lot_to.php
Well, WELL, at least we don't elect candidates that don't parse their words to misdirect voters! Right!?? http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/03/28/834887.aspx
OH FUCK IT!

I'm just making the prediction that the RNC is going to stoop as low as we think they will and start to push the race issue hard
to be fair the democrats are probably going to do the same but it's a little different because they're going to push the positive (omg, won't it be cool to have a black president)
while the RNC is going to push the negative (black president = scary jesse and al!)

My comment was addressing nastoute, who was pissiing and moaning about the nasty Republicans. I just wanted to point out that there is nothing the Repubs do that the Dems don't, these day.
I'm not playing victim. I'm disgusted with what the Democratic Party has come to. After years of bitching about Bush's conduct in the 2000 and 2004 elections, the Dems respond by emulating his very tactics?

It really isn't that different. In the end both parties will be judging a candidate's abilities to be a good president by his skin color and not his actual abilities. If Obama wins because "it's time for a black president" rules the day, that's not going to grant him a lot of legitimacy in the eyes of Congress or other leaders of the world. I agree that the Republicans shouldn't make it a race thing, but the Democratic primaries have already kind of made it so.6/8/2008 1:35:23 PM |
