Affirmative. I suppose that 30% is to go towards paying for the bandwidth & infrastructure primarily... with a little wedge for Steve's bonus. 6/9/2008 2:18:15 PM |

it's a solution for some apps, but not all.
it would work fine for an IM app, for example, where the request has to go through the application's server anyway. but for any app that is listening for internal iPhone events it wouldn't work6/9/2008 2:18:17 PM |

Man as a current iPhone owner, I'm surprised how fast they went to 3G.
A bit pissed too because I was an early adopter, right before the price cut (15 days to be exact).
I hope they do some trade up program, but I know they won't. 6/9/2008 2:53:54 PM |

^^ Does At&t do 2 year commitments when you buy their phones?
If you're currently in an agreement... I'd bet that you at the very least, have to sign a new two year agreement.
But, depending on the deal apple & at&t struck, you might have to buy out your contract to upgrade.

That sucks balls. Why can't i just buy the iphone and switch phones keeping my same contract?
And what about all the current iphone users that want to get the new 3g one? Will they have to buy thier way out of the contract AND buy the 3g iphone?
-Oh and what's the difference between 2g talk and 3g talk, besides 10 and 5 hour talk times? Does 3g sound that much better to cut the battery life in half?

Good question. I'm not sure how they will sell this phone. Before you could go to an Apple store and outright buy the phone for the retail price, same for AT&T stores. Now, I wonder if you have to sign an agreement of some sort at purchase to qualify for the price, or if they will just sell you the device for $199 or whatever at the Apple store as well.
I think there will be alot of specifics coming down the pipe in the next few days. 6/9/2008 3:10:59 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
You never had to buy your way out of the contract before when you bough at iphone. In fact when I bought mine I signed a brand new 2 year contract right before I activated my iphone so I could get another phone free and re-sell it. I wouldn't be too worried about that.
I'm beginning to think that current owners will be able to pony up the $199 for the "upgrade". 6/9/2008 3:11:39 PM |

You guys not familiar w/ how GSM phone sales work?
It's be $199/$299 for new signups, probably $200+ more for current users who only want the new phone & no extension of contract. You'll just buy if "off contract." 6/9/2008 3:13:11 PM |

This is no doubt a subsidized price through AT&T, Apple would not cut prices in half for everyone unless they were getting something out of it. 6/9/2008 3:13:17 PM |

apple has to be the worst when it comes to dissapointing the consumer by releasing a newer version of something soon after a lot of people just bought it.
that said, I am glad i waited 1 year for the 3g version 6/9/2008 3:15:11 PM |

I'm asking my friend who works at an apple store about this issue. I doubt he'll know more than us, but maybe. Because 199$ w/o signing a new contract would sell me.
^ok nvm. So it's probably 399$/499$ w/o the contract?

i'm not sure what you guys who already bought the first iPhone were expecting. For those people who bought it within days of the first release before the $200 drop, yeah, you guys have a right to feel ripped off, but you got your $100 credit.
If you bought one before ~March 2008, what's your problem? Did you think that was going to be the last iPhone ever? If you bought one after March, when it was apparent the 3G iPhone was imminent, that's your own fault. Phone get updated. Apple, especially, updates their products on a pretty consistent time table. From what other company in the world would you expect a free or discounted upgrade just because a newer model came out 6-9 months after you bought yours? 6/9/2008 3:22:22 PM |

I really suspect they will force you to sign a contract at sale, or no sale at all.
That would totally remove the unlockers
PLUS, why would they sell an 8gb ipod touch for $100 more if anyone could walk up and buy an iPhone 3G. That makes no sense.

well sure, existing at&t customers will have to "sign" a new two year contract, but it's not like they'll charge existing customers any more than new customers...or tell us we'll have to wait out the current contract or anything stupid like that. i've been with at&t since it was bell south (around here at least) so i for one don't care about signing new contracts]6/9/2008 3:48:32 PM |

chances of that are 0. They're still charging $1000 to upgrade the macbook air to a 64GB SSD. Best case, i'd say, would be to increase the line from 8, 16, 32GB to 16, 32, 64GB. Even that seems a bit lofty to me..... i'd just look for a significant price drop on the current models 6/9/2008 4:41:16 PM |
